      • Can't help but think that if the NCAA said every player gets paid $1, some schools would find a way to funnel them $2. If the NCAA says $2, they'll end up with $4. Of course you still have to take care of the AAC coaches.............big sigh.

But you seem to be making the argument that if there was a free and unfettered market in college basketball or even one with some kind of salary cap negotiated by the "owners" and the players comparable to the NBA that teams would not be willing to pay these players more than the value of a scholarship. Perhaps that's true for a good portion of the NCAA D-1 teams but I don't see that being the case with most P-5 teams.

As far as your last point I think the size of the pie would remain about the same which would include whatever amount of money is circulating through the system under the table and off the official grid. However, I think the way the pie is sliced and diced could change signficantly. It is also possible that P-5 separates from the NCAA and the pie becomes more concentrated in their favor.
My take is more that this mythical free and unfettered market doesn't and wouldn't exist. It's a figment of Jay Bilas' imagination. And if it was, it's more likely to be akin to Independent League baseball, the CHL, or arena football. Those athletes aren't swimming in the money that ESPN is promising these basketball players they are worth. In fact, I'd wager they are making significantly less than the benefits college students receive (free room and board and tuition as a baseline).

                    • Read this bunch of crap a VCU fan posted on the rivals board...

It's funny you have these two. VCU and WSU had the opportunity to setup a H&H after the Bracketbuster series of 2011-2012 and Shaka refused. Recruit Carl Hall committed verbally to VCU: https://www.vcuramnation.com/2010/09...man-carl-hall/

What happened after is "hearsay", but has legs. Hall switched to Wichita State at the last second, there was speculation it had to do with $$.

All we know for sure, is that Shaka refused to schedule a H&H that WSU was asking for. Shaka's demeanor on the sideline clearly showed he didn't like Marshall. WSU then took our fight song too. It's a nice "sort of" rivalry, that always has close games (2011 BB, 2012 NCAA tourney, 2012-2013 return BB game)

The FBI's probe into the seedy underbelly of college basketball has already led to the resignation of a former NCAA official. This is clearly only the beginning of a long, drawn-out ordeal.

As I mentioned in another post there would probably be some big winners and some big losers. Most of that will depend on what would happen with the TV Money. My guess is the rich would get richer and the poor would get poorer. However, that is a totally different issue apart from whether the current structure of college basketball provides a framework that you can say sets the fair market value of individual players. I think it is pretty clear that it does not. But it isn't designed to that nor supposed to that. That's not to say it isn't the best approach for college sports. Maybe it is. But sure doesn't strike me as a free enterprise system. But it has morphed into big business especially at the top rung.

The gap between the rich and the poor, even in the current system seems to be growing and there is a very real potential for that to get even worse depending on what the so-called Power Conferences do and how the media values and approaches things.

I am not sure I understand the Alabama situation. They felt the need to announce the had "accepted" the resignation of a men's basketball administrator but had not found any rules violations????
