    3. SEC poaches OU and OSU from the Big 12 to arrive at 16 members

    4. PAC poaches UT and TTU from Big 12, Houston from the AAC and UNM from Mountain West to arrive at 16 members

The Beakers and the Shockers receive invitations from the AAC and Mountain West
It could turn into an arms race between the MWC and the AAC to be the other "power" conference. There are basically enough good programs across the U.S. for one of these conferences to pull it off. One would probably end up being closer to mid-major and the other would be closer to a power conference. I like the AAC for that. There would be just enough leftover Big 12 schools and top end mid-majors like Gonzaga, BYU, WSU, VCU, etc. to make it possible.

Don't flame me, but I think KU would have a reasonable chance of being attractive to the Big 10. The football ineptitude of Indiana, Rutgers, and Illinois have not prevented them from being a part of the conference. And the conference may want KU's basketball to bolster an already top heavy line up and offset bottom feeders like Northwestern, Minnesota, Penn State, and Nebraska.

If KU's basketball program isn't strong enough for it to be attractive to a better conference, then WSU is screwed my friends.

Indiana and Illinois are legacy members, Rutgers was added for the New York/ New Jersey markets. Nobody is throwing out legacy programs in any of the P-5's. As for expansion, The P-5's care about one thing: football. Kansas doesn't deliver football. As for Wichita State, the posturing being done, from what I can tell, has nothing to do with joining a P-5. With that, a well rounded athletic program, that includes football, should be good enough for the AAC and the MWC.

An old blog, but still relevant.

The college basketball fan lives a difficult life. The season is too short. The offseason is too long. The NCAA tournament, as brilliant a competition as any in sports, is under siege.

Big 12 expansion talk runs hot so it’s time for us all to board the plane to Fantasy Island, time for Herve Villechaize to come back from the dead to greet us, time for us to talk about what to wear for the wedding between the Big Ten and Kansas. For many reasons, the Big […]

This is why Kansas fans shouldn't think that they are an automatic B1G invite.

I was driving through their campus a few months ago and man that football stadium is plain and run down. I have seen nicer Texas 3A HS stadiums. Also, Allen Fieldhouse is ridiculously overrated. Everyone is crammed into an arena that should be twice as big to accommodate the size of the average Kansan in the 21st century. Very few modern conveniences either. We are spoiled at JQH I guess.

If KU has any appeal to the Big Ten it is because it borders Nebraska and it has AAU membership. Though I wonder how much that matters to the Big Ten now that Nebraska got kicked out. It's really too bad that K-State isn't an AAU member because I think they would be more desirable by far if they did.

Allen Fieldhouse is 10,000x the arena than either the Octogon of Doom or JQH. Next you will be telling us that you are spoiled because Cameron Indoor is a dump, too. I guess your newer, minor league baseball stadium is nicer than Wrigley or Fenway...

Certainly the places you like have a lot of tradition. I prefer comfort and amenities over that. Never been to Fenway or Cameron but Wrigley is definitely a total dump. Whitey Herzog said they should raze the place and I could not agree more. AFH is an uncomfortable place to watch a game. If it adds to the experience to imagine Wilt Chamberlain walking out on that court 100 years ago then cool. But after you have seen the Beware of the Phog video and stuff, it is just an old arena. I'd rather watch a game at JQH.

I sit here and wonder..... This guy can't be serious. Then I think, sure he can. Just not sure anyone can be that stupid.

By the way, I had a son attend a recent Catholic youth convention at MSU and in JQH. It was July 8-10. I asked about the Venable JQH. He said that the arena was ordinary, but added the seats in the upper bowl were small and uncomfortable. True story.

I don't know about any of those other places, but I have to agree that AFH is overrated as a place to watch a game. It's cool as a historical site, but that's about it for me.

Because of the crowd and overall look of everything inside it, AFH feels like an old barn most of the time.. When it gets loud though, that is the real deal. It's the same affect of walking into an old dive bar that once in awhile still has a very lively and busy night.

Is such a "race" plausible given the realignment of the existing P5 into a P4 scenario?

Would seem that the P4 conferences would capture the vast majority of television money, thus leaving remaining conferences in dire straits regards financing competitive football programs.

I'm sure it's much roomier to watch a game with a crowd of 600 in an 11,000 seat arena.

I don't doubt it. It's not perfect. But as someone who is extremely claustrophobic, I have had two near claustrophobic induced panic attacks: one in the capsule taking you to the top of the Arch in St. Louis and the other one at AFH. It was extremely unsettling. JQH is roomier and more comfortable.

I like history. Heck I majored in it. But when I want to see something historic, I go to a museum or historic site. I am just not very enamored with the older stadiums that everybody says are great because in 1932 Babe Ruth may (or most likely did not) have signaled he was going to hit a HR and then hit it at Wrigley Field. I would much prefer to watch a game at the K or the new Busch over Fenway or Wrigley.
