First and foremost, and I'm basing this on memory because the referenced article seems to be behind a paywall. (I'm a little under the weather and lack the motivation to haul my laptop out). I'm doing this from memory.
The young student who wrote this letter was Jewish. Not part of the core protesters at MU.
Second, he did not complain to news media, law enforcement and does not appear to be doing this for any financial gain. While he does appear to be rallying Jewish students, I can not see where he is getting any personal gain from doing this.
Third, he states that this has happened IIRC, the last four years running. Why in the world would someone with nothing to gain even consider repeating this part? Most liars would say 'this is what happened' and leave off the 'and it's happened for four years in a row'.
People generally do not tell the truth for a reason. It could be for financial gain, to keep from going to jail, to keep from being embarrassed, or to gain power, but inside that lie is the perception of gain of some sort.
This young man could have went to law enforcement, news media, politicians or lawyers. He did not. He was discussing a matter of concern with fellow students.
Next someone (and I doubt it was this young man) turns the information over to the newspaper in Columbia, which would be the equivalent of giving it to the Lawrence Journal World if it happened at KU. Does it make any sense for the small town newspaper that is proud of its university and where the editors live and work with university administrators to print such a story without verifying it?
Without a convincing argument otherwise, and I would like to hear it, I'd say the 'plausible denial' issued by the Federalist is nothing more than hot air, like articles I've seen on the other side from Huffpost or the Guardian. Red meat half truths disguised as an article to motivate people to make knee-jerk reactions. And I can come up with a motive for why The Federalist would do that. It squares perfectly with the white person as victim meme.
As for me, I don't think white people are victims. And if they are victims, they are victims of their own poor choices (maybe someday I can tell you that story over a beer or glass of wine). Many people sit and kvetch, but few want to work hard and persevere.
