Listing last in D1 FBS attendance is irrelevant as the majority of years Eastern Michigan comes in dead last, with a margin of 5,000-10,000 to second-to-dead last. Otherwise, Missouri State would be that second-to-dead last program almost every year.

Also interesting to note that the schools in the D1 FBS 5th percentile and below have overall athletic budgets on average twice what Missouri State has. Even no-football Wichita State nearly doubles up D1 FBS hopeful Missouri State in this context. Missouri State has more in common from an athletics funding perspective to D2 Pitt State than they do they bottom 5% of D1 FBS, which is fitting, since WSU was going to the Elite Eight, spending lots of time in the MBB AP top 10, playing in the national championship game of the CWS, and fostering a number of legitimate future NBA-ers and MLB-ers at roughly the same point in human history that MSU was making the move from D2 to D1.

      • Obviously there are a number of programs in the bottom 5% in terms of attendance who are not meeting the average of 15,000 in either paid or actual attendance requirement for FBS membership. So do these programs operate under some kind of waiver of is that requirement not really enforced?

Not sure, but it spans over multiple years. I can't remember of it's two or three years.

It's a rolling 2 year period. On the attendance numbers that @SHOCKvalue: reported the average for the bottom 5% doesn't meet the 15,000 average attendance criteria for any 2 year period. If that's accurate it's reasonable to assume that a number of the programs in that group are not meeting that average attendance requirement.

Edit: Not quite halftime. The band was on the field, just over 2:00 to play. Waiting for the field goal to make it 19-0. So while the band is accounted for, the stands aren't empty due to a halftime bathroom break or run on the concession stand.
I'm not sure I can count more than 30 players. Assuming 11 more are on the field and out of frame, that's only 40. Did many of them stop attending, too?

You are looking at the visitors bench. I don't know what the travel constructions are in FCS or MVFC, but assuming 11 are on the field and a few are outside of the field of vision, 50-55 might not be an unreasonable travel roster.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

                    • Looked it up. MVFC travel roster limited to 60.

                      • If that's the visitor's side, you probably wouldn't expect many MSU fans to be sitting there, unless the home side was full. And of course, we know that isn't very likely.

Student side. Visiting teams usually are placed closest to the raucous students. Also, SDSU brought both a large (relative) contingent of fans, plus their marching band. No home field advantage for the Bears.

Without SDSU's help, it's possible that the stadium would have been totally empty.

Why is the band "Pride Band" backing the opposing team's bench? This is highly unusual. Maybe MSU's problem is that their feng shui fooked up?

Not sure why it is labeled Pride Band. A Group of Bears is called a sloth. A pride is a group of lions. So technically this should be the Sloth Band. Male bears are called boars and Female bears are called sows although technically they are only related to pigs other than the fact that they are both mammals.

                              • Crap! I was duck hunting last weekend and didn't follow America's Team on their fast track to the Sun Belt. Anyway, the Bears lost 47-7 to Youngstown State. A huge upset, as the Bears are a formidable opponent for any FBS, much less, FCS team. This must have been the Super Bowl for Youngstown State.
