  • This one cracked me up... Workers at ObamaCare call center angry after being offered jobs without health benefits
A soon-to-be-opened call center meant to help teach the public about ObamaCare is under fire for offering many of its new employees part-time positions — in turn denying them benefits under the very law they are helping to implement.

The Contra Costa Times reports the call center, which is set to be opened Oct. 1, attracted about 7,000 applicants for 200 jobs after the county won the right to operate it earlier this year. Many workers and local politicians say they believed that the majority of the positions at the center would be full-time with benefits.

    • I'm not certain of all the details, but when I discussed our company's options with 3 separate healthcare professionals, it's my understanding that simply hiring part time personnel doesn't mean you're exempt from the plan.

I.E. Take the hours worked by all employees, divide by 40 and if the total is more than 50 then you either have to provide it or pay the penalty.

I certainly could have misinterpreted, but that's my understanding.

Bottom line is, I don't think just turning your workforce into part time is going to get you out of ObamaCare.

Also, you aren't going to find more than 1% of businesses that fall under the 50 employee threshold that will continue to provide health after the mandate kicks in. Why would they? For me there is no penalty. The lowest income earners are going to get a huge subsidy. In fact, anyone under 400% of the poverty line will get some kind of federal subsidy. This entire thing is one huge cluster ****. The only thing it's going to do that was intended is push the country closer to a single payer plan, which has been the hope from the get go from the left. As long as they can still be exempt of course.

      • an amendment to the ACA, or "Obamacare," sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, requires that beginning Jan. 1, 2014, members of Congress and their staff must purchase their health insurance through a government exchange. It is not clear that they would continue to receive their current subsidies.

Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, warned, "It's going to hinder our ability for members to take care of their families." Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said, "A lot of the staff stays on largely because of the benefit levels and particularly if you've got people with families…it's just not right." Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., complained, "Listen, this is simply not fair to these employees. They are federal employees."

I think a number of businesses have realized that it's cheaper to pay the "tax" than pay all your employees HC costs since they're being forced to provide for more

          • UPS just announced that they're dropping coverage for thousands of spouses due to ObamaCare costs. I also saw on the news a few days ago that Forever 21 was dropping hours of many FT employees to 29.5 to avoid the costs. I don't know much about that store, but it sounds like they're a very large retailer that employs a lot of young people.

It's funny how ObamaCare is supposed to give people insurance, but many are losing their coverage because of this stupid law. Sure, they can get some crappy gov't funded insurance but I'm guessing most will have wished they still had the coverage provided by their employers before all of this.

            • One way or another everyone with health insurance will have to pay. The way it was, if someone without insurance, went to the emergency room, those costs would be passed on to those with insurance. I'd rather have the ones without insurance be able to get insurance so those costs are no longer passed on to those with insurance.

              • And in the process of doing so, it'll raise healthcare costs and many people will have lesser coverage than they used to because of it. Is that really a gain?

I'm sorry, but there's so much wrong with this I don't even know where to start. It's like emptying a beach one grain of sand at a time.

Wow. Talk about blindly following your party...

How about rather than shoving a bill down our throats that doesn't work, has ripples upon ripples of unintended consequences and is so cumbersome that the government can't even implement it on time, Obama pushed for legislation that cut costs and made insurance more affordable, we just might not see these types of stories.

Instead, we get a mess, garbage that will eventually force everyone into what will be a single payer plan. I really think that was the ultimate goal, though, screw everything up so badly that the only fix is single payer.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

                      • My understanding on the specifics of the UPS situation is dropping coverage for those spouses who have access to healthcare coverage at their own employer. This is a practice my wife's employer/insurer have done for years.

How does that work? How does UPS know if a spouse has access to coverage. Does UPS then drop coverage on dependents as well? Force the kids onto the spouses plan? I could see giving an incentive to employees who decline coverage, but being UPS, I don't see how the Teamsters go for any of this.

                          • Ahh, I read the article, it only effects management. If this included rank and file, the Teamsters would be putting lots and lots of horse heads in people's beds.

                            • Actually the way it works with my wife's employer is I can be on her healthcare plan (and I am), but only at no extra cost to us if my employer pays less than half of single coverage. My employer pays more than half of single coverage, but her plan is better, costs about the same to add me, and it is better overall to have the whole family on one plan, so we elect to pay the upcharge. It is done basically on the honor system on the annual enrollment process, but they can always audit for verification if need be.

Yep, it's working exactly as it was designed, and probably faster than they expected.
