  • GOP forces new House vote on health overhaul

WASHINGTON - After nine straight hours of beating back Republican amendments, Senate Democrats hit a temporary snag Thursday in their drive to rush through a package of fixes to the big health care law signed by President Barack Obama.

Democratic Senate leaders had hoped to complete work on the fix-it bill by midday Thursday and get it quickly to Obama to avoid prolonging what has been a politically painful ordeal for the party.

    • I wonder at what point do we see the possibility of another American revolution or civil war? We are seeing this administration doing is the same type of incremental things that Chavez and others have done to take down democratic societies.

I wonder what happens on the "Bring Your Guns to Washington Rally"?

It's interesting that they picked April 19th as the day for the rally. We all know what happened on April 19, 1993 in Waco and then what Timothy McVeigh did 2 years later on April 19th in Oklahoma City.

        • Congressional Staffers Complain About Double Standard in Health Care Law
Come 2014, all 100 U.S. senators, all 435 representatives in the House and every one of their personal aides will have to go to the newly formed state exchanges for health insurance -- just like everyone else in the country who isn't covered by their employer.

But select congressional leadership staffers -- some of whom wrote the health insurance act -- won't. And neither will White House staffers and Cabinet members -- nor the president himself. They will be allowed to keep their current plans, which are offered to all other federal employees.
"If it's such a good bill, why did the people who wrote the bill exempt themselves from it?" asked a Republican aide who requested anonymity. "With this administration it's always, 'Do as I say, not as I do,' just like paying your taxes!"
"If we're forced on the exchange, then everyone should be," a Democratic staffer said.
"If this health care bill is so great, then why are Obama's staff exempt?" a GOP aide scoffed. "If we have to give up our health care, then so should every federal employee."

              Hilarious.

The democratic process doesn't go your way, so you talk about revolution and overthrowing the government.

              Real American of you.

Yes. This is our government spending money in America, where we can at least expect to get an equal amount of dollars in benefit, instead of spending a trillion dollars in Iraq for no good reason.

That doesn't even begin to cover the adulation I'm feeling for this country finally addressing the one glaring problem with our "richest nation in the world" tag we're all so proud of: how we take care of the health of our citizens, from top to bottom.

You might also want to stop with the weak insults, if just for a little while. You have attempted to debate "liberals" by claiming how they always argue so poorly (personal attacks, no facts, etc.), then committed those exact same tactics yourself just a few posts later.

                        • Dear concerned citizens and those of you mandated under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (hereinafter “PPACA”) to have an SEIU-member nurse read this to you,

Look I don’t want to pay for this either. But sometimes you just have to take a beating, dust yourself off, and get back into the fight.

Not me, of course. Inspired by rjl’s enlightening posts I for one welcome our new bureaucratic overlords. I think I can be helpful explaining the forms to the proletariat and informing our leaders where the majority of contributors to this forum section are hiding their unearned wealth.

Moving on a lot of people on the Left cannot come to grips with the conservative “overreaction” to this legislation. Well, I don’t think it is an overreaction, and I can help liberals understand what’s happening. Consider the Patriot Act. Here was a law that affected a teeny-weeny number of people (don’t you start Royal). Almost all of the horrible things it did never happened. Remember all the teeth-gnashing about searched libraries? Totally bogus.

And yet, people all over the country got their dresses over their heads about the Patriot Act. Why? Well, I would argue partly out of addlepated paranoia, ignorance, and Bush hatred. They would argue it was out of deep-seated principle. Let’s compromise and say that for many, it was both, and for a few, it was all about principle.

Opposition to the PPACA seems vastly more rational to me. By its very design it affects everyone. It costs them money. It will cost them freedom. It will cost our country money, medical innovation, and mounds of debt. It involves far, far more government intrusion into our lives than the Patriot Act. And yet, many of the same people who considered the Patriot Act an American Nuremburg Law think this is one of the greatest moments in American history.

Figuring out what it will mean for retirees will take longer, but analysts said as many as 2 million could lose the prescription drug coverage provided by their former employers, leaving them to enroll in Medicare's program.
American industrial companies that are struggling to compete globally against companies with much lower labor costs are particularly likely to eventually drop retiree coverage, said Gene Imhoff, an accounting professor at the University of Michigan.
Consumers Energy, a Michigan gas and electric company with 2.9 million customers, said it will not take a big first-quarter charge because, like most utility companies, it can try to recover the added costs from its customers through rate hikes.
