From the Marion Record regarding Police Chief Cody ...

The Record earlier reported that Cody had driven over a dead man in Kansas City.
The source gave more details Friday.
The source said Cody often joked about running over the man.
Compromising evidence and running over the man, Cody sped through an active fatality scene in downtown Kansas City during an unrelated police chase.
The man had jumped from a higher interstate, and his body landed “splat in the middle of the interstate below,” the source said.
Police still were shutting down the area and diverting traffic when Cody, the source said, plowed through the scene.
Although police suspected the man had committed suicide, they hadn’t yet confirmed that when Cody ran over his body.
Someone could have pushed him off the higher interstate, or his body could have ended up in the middle of the lower interstate for some other reason, the source stressed.
Cody “basically screwed up the whole crime scene,” the source said.
Cody was transferred and suspended as a result of the incident, one of many in which he used bad judgment, the source said.

Wichita Animal Shelter continues to **** up.

MSN - Wichita animal rescuers outraged after mistaken euthanasia of at least 12 dogs at city shelter

Animal advocate Maryssa Reed who works with a local animal rescue, shared her story of a rescue dog.

“This particular dog was fond wondering by a citizen and she was afraid to surrender the animal to the [Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital] because she was afraid of the fees,” Reed said.

Because the dog wasn’t microchipped, the shelter was Reed’s only choice. She said she told the shelter that if the dog’s owner couldn’t be found, she was interested in adoption.

“Every two to three days, I went back to the shelter to check on the dog. The proper owner was never located,” Reed said.

She said she followed up with the Kansas Humane Society on the possible adoption. It appeared procedures were followed to get the dog a new home with Reed. That’s not what happened.

“I have inside information through my lost and found group that this dog was on of 18 that were euthanized [Wednesday],” Reed said.

After listening to Reed’s story, 12 News went to the Wichita Animal Shelter and spoke with Lt. Derek Purcell who said he looked into the situation and found that his staff did make an error.

“There was a mistake, there’s no two ways about it,” he said. “That should not have happened.”

So, what did happen? Purcell confirmed 17 dogs were euthanized Wednesday, but only five had immediate concerns to warrant euthanasia.
So now they're basically confirming what Beauties and Beasts accused them of a few months ago when they severed their relationship. They have no real oversight or policies that prevent these things from happening and have continued to kill innocent animals that shouldn't be killed.

Is there a future serial killer working there that gets off on this?

Will there ever be any kind of actual accountability or major policy shift to prevent this?

            This is totally inexcusable!

Obviously, much better oversight AND policies are needed. Perhaps an outsider, like Beauties and Beasts, should be assigned as the oversight.

The Wichita Animal Shelter is managed by WPD. If you’re hoping for repercussions, accountability or change I wouldn’t hold my breath. I’m not blindly hating, it’s just those actions don’t really exist anymore when government employees are involved, especially law enforcement, strangely.

WBJ - Evergy, KCC announce rate settlement agreement; regulatory approval still needed

Evergy (NASDAQ: EVRG) and the KCC announced late Friday "a unanimous settlement agreement," which would increase monthly bills for an average residential customer in Wichita and the company's Kansas Central service area by $4.64, instead of $14.24.

In addition to the Wichita school district, local names supporting the settlement, according to a regulatory filing, include the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce and Spirit AeroSystems (NYSE: SPR), the city's largest employer.

The agreement still must be approved by the KCC, the regulatory body in charge of making a final decision on the case.
                  .....
The Friday filing noted Wichita Public Schools signing onto the deal is "subject to approval" by its board of education, just like Johnson County school districts in the Kansas City area.

AARP, U.S. Department of Defense, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Industrial Consumers Group and the Natural Resources Defense Council are among others listed as supporting the deal.

The filing notes Walmart (NYSE: WMT), HF Sinclair El Dorado Refining LLC, Atmos Energy Corporation, Kansas Gas Service and the Streetlights Alliance for Fair Energy Rates Coalition as not signing onto the settlement, but are also not opposing it. HF Sinclair El Dorado Refining LLC is a part of HF Sinclair (NYSE: DINO).

On Oct. 9, the KCC will hold a hearing on the settlement agreement in Topeka. The event will be live-streamed on the commission's YouTube channel.

Eagle - Marion police chief who raided Kansas newspaper suspended: Marion County Record

An employee in the city administrator’s office, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Wichita Eagle and Kansas City Star that Cody was suspended as of Thursday.

Mayfield later confirmed his decision in an email to The Eagle.

“I can confirm that I suspended chief Cody,” Mayfield wrote. “I cannot comment further as this is a personnel matter.”

Mayfield previously defended Cody’s actions, saying he didn’t understand what he did wrong. The decision comes as the KBI has expanded its investigation into whether Cody asked restaurant owner Kari Newell to delete text messages.

Marion City Administrator Brogan Jones alerted some council members about the suspension on Friday, The Record reported.

Eagle - Police chief who raided small Kansas newspaper resigns

Gideon Cody, the small-town Kansas police chief who spearheaded a raid on the Marion County Record, resigned Monday, Marion Mayor David Mayfield said.

Mayfield hired Cody in the spring and suspended him last week without explanation.

At Monday’s Marion City Council meeting, Mayfield announced Cody handed in his resignation before the meeting, “effective immediately.” Mayfield declined to talk to reporters after the meeting and offered no explanation for Cody’s departure.

Mayfield appointed Marion Officer Zach Hudlin as acting chief, with the council’s approval.

The mayor had previously defended Cody and said he would not take any action until the Kansas Bureau of Investigation finished its probe into the raids. Last week, he reversed that decision and suspended Cody. He would not say why.

A little more info from KAKE that I haven't seen on the Gideon Cody issue

KAKE - Things to know about the resignation of a Kansas police chief who led a raid on a small newspaper

A Kansas police chief who led an August raid on a small weekly newspaper seemed to have the support of most city leaders in the weeks since the search, despite public outcry and calls for his resignation.

But that changed quickly once details began emerging about Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody's conduct. Cody was suspended Thursday, the same day a television station reported that he asked a local restaurant owner to delete text messages. Then body camera video of the Aug. 11 search of the Marion County Record was released — and it appeared to show Cody looking at a reporter's investigative file about him. Emails about the raid also emerged. By Monday, he resigned.

The raid on the paper, along with related searches of the homes of its publisher and a City Council member, put the town of 1,900 residents some 150 miles (240 kilometers) southwest of Kansas City at the center of a national debate over press freedoms. The raids also focused an intense spotlight on Cody’s motives because the paper had been looking into his past.
He had someone delete text messages because he feared how they would look if discovered. (You can delete texts from your phone but they still exist and can be pulled by your service provider with a warrant)

He planted the seed of a crime in the mind of the restaurant owner with the DUI, even though the prosecutor responded that he didn't have enough to go on.

He went through a file on him that was completely unrelated to the case for which they were carrying out the search warrant.

And while not illegal, but not a good look at all, video and audio during the raid on the paper show him trying to intimidate one of the reporters by suggesting she could be charged for something if she didn't implicate Mr. Meyer for illegal activities.

He's basically a **** cop and a **** person and I'm sure someone, somewhere, will hire him again.
