        • So T&F CC and mens and womens golf locker rooms are in this building. I wonder if the learning center is for all sports or will they still have the study center in CKA still available for basketball volleyball and the other sports. Nice job WstateU

I am not 100% sure but I think the new learning center is for all athletes and replaces (not supplements) the study center in CKA. Part of this project includes a renovation of the CKA office complex that will enlarge (double), renovate and reorganize the current office complex. The doubling of the office complexes presumably will consume the current CKA study center.

From an Wichita Eagle article last June:

The current setup has student-athletes from every WSU team sharing the same academic center and weightlifting room inside Koch Arena. Both areas are overwhelmed by the total number of student-athletes they have to support.

King said after speaking with student-athletes from all sports, the biggest complaint she heard was that the overcrowded situation in the academic center did not lead to conducive studying and tutoring areas. Study halls are difficult with tables so crowded, and there aren’t enough private rooms where 1-on-1 tutoring can take place.
I guess it is possible they could keep a separate student center in CKA but does it make sense to have two areas since the academic staff will be the new building.

I assume the weight training room inside Koch Arena will remain in place but won't be so crowded.

            • From the same Eagle article mentioned above:

              https://www.kansas.com/sports/colleg...231699148.html

While the project will enhance the academic experience for student-athletes on every WSU team, it’s clear that the biggest beneficiaries of the building will be track and field athletes.

Currently, the track and field team is housed in the archaic bowels of Cessna Stadium. After speaking face-to-face with many of the athletes on the team, WSU Foundation president Elizabeth King knew how crucial this project was for the track and field team.

“We listened to our student-athletes, particularly our young, female athletes, who would talk about the mice that would run over their feet in the showers and the really deplorable conditions of the men’s and women’s locker rooms and team rooms,” King said in her speech. “Now they’re going to have a chance to have a state-of-the-art locker room and team room. They have deserved this for so many years, and finally now we’re going to make it happen.”

The housing situation for track and field athletes has been so poor that the program is ashamed of it when they try to recruit athletes to the team.

Adding brand-new locker rooms and a team room large enough to host team meetings with 120-plus athletes will be a game-changer for the track and field program, head coach Steve Rainbolt told the media. The track and field team will also have its own weight-lifting room in the new facility, which will lead out to Cessna Stadium.

“I will tell you those locker rooms are tired, there’s no question about it,” Rainbolt said. “There’s leaks and just the nature of an old facility like Cessna Stadium, they’re just not livable, they’re really not. This is going to be a spectacular upgrade.”

I saw this today -- it's a very interesting statistic, and something to be very proud of. College is- in many ways- the new American Dream. It opens doors in life that otherwise would remain closed. It's also generational--if your parents go to college, you are exponentially more likely to attend college.

I'm in my second masters at a top university, but will always remember Wichita State fondly--it was perfect for me.

They are concerned that a large portion of international students will not return in the fall or that the prospective students may not come.

Due to the intended negative financial impact that the COVID-19 pandemic will have on university finances, Wichita State will implement a hiring freeze. The university also announced “restrictions on discretionary spending including travel and non-essential purchases,” in today’s WSU Today. “We are confident that, with strategic and thoughtful planning, Wichita State will emerge even stronger...

Not surprising and obviously the shrinkage side effect for COVID-19 won't be limited to enrollment at Wichita State. It will be a huge drag until the widespread fear diminishes and the timetable for that is impossible to predict but doesn't seem likely that it will be a quick resolution.

                      • A new apartment complex opening up on 17th street in about a month. Obviously the developer was not counting on anything like the coronavirus. They certainly won't be happy to read the article in the Sunflower that RoyalShock posted.

Looking for a place close to Wichita State University? Nothing beats new, as in brand new, apartments for rent. View our available units now!

I will say it's a nice upgrade for 17th Street and looks like a pretty well done project. Hopefully, overtime it will be successful but this pandemic may prove to a catalyst for a massive move from Brick & Mortar campi to the online delivery of educational services. Although using the facilties on the innovation campus is something you can't replicate online although maybe you can recreate that using virtual reality.

Are we facing a General Cornwallis moment (as portrayed at the end of The Patriot). Everything will change, everything has changed. That actually worked out pretty well over 200 years ago although it took a long time and a lot of trials and tribulations. Starting from a totally different country and world at this point in time.

he did bring up Creighton’s soccer stadium though it holds about 7k and he wants a facility to hold roughly 12,500.

Question for you soccer SMEs: does a soccer pitch fit inside a track? It looks quite a bit wider than a football field.

IIRC @KungWu has addressed that question previously although finding it would be difficult. But if I don't thing he was real fond of the idea.

It does not. A new stadium would require a new track as well.
