Wichita State among 25 institutions picked for national innovation program
Wichita State University is among 25 U.S. institutions that have been selected by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter) to join the Pathways to Innovation Program.
The Pathways to Innovation Program is run by Epicenter, which is funded by the National Science Foundation and directed by Stanford University and VentureWell (formerly NCIIA). It is designed to help institutions fully incorporate innovation and entrepreneurship into undergraduate engineering education – a top priority for Wichita State.
“Innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship and technology will shape the future of Wichita State and ensure this region’s prosperity,” said WSU President John Bardo. “Our College of Engineering’s participation in this prestigious National Science Foundation program will help accelerate our momentum.”
Participating schools have each assembled a team of faculty and academic leaders to assess their institution’s current offerings, design a unique strategy for change, and lead their peers in a two-year transformation process. James Steck, director of aerospace engineering, and Steven Skinner, associate dean for research and graduate programs, are WSU’s co-leaders.
Program teams receive access to models for integrating entrepreneurship into engineering curriculum, custom online resources, guidance from a community of engineering and entrepreneurship faculty, and membership in a national network of schools with similar goals.
The schools in the new cohort join an inaugural group of 12 institutions that have participated in the program since January 2014. Their projects include innovation certificates and majors, maker and flexible learning spaces, first-year and capstone courses, faculty fellows programs, and innovation centers.
ATAI at Wichita State launches Center for Social Knowledge
Wichita State University's Applied Technology Acceleration Institute (ATAI) is launching a new Center for Social Knowledge, which will be co-led by iTalent Corp., an award-winning technology consulting and systems integration company known for its best practice implementations of social knowledge in Fortune 100 companies.
ATAI is expanding rapidly, focusing on student mentoring
The Applied Technology Acceleration Institute (ATAI), Wichita State University's newest industry-focused applied learning environment, is staying true to its name and expanding at a rapid pace.
“We currently employ mainly engineering students, but our new industry connections require us to engage students in several additional areas including marketing, advanced analytics, social knowledge, business, and graphic design,” said Witherspoon.
These students will be involved in product implementation and go-to-market strategies -- taking products from the research and development stage all the way through the pathway to market.
“We want to focus on the career development of our students during their time with us,” said Witherspoon. “Our goal is to reduce the learning curve for a new college graduate to be productive in industry from an average of 18 months to three months.”
ATAI is growing rapidly because Russell has worked tirelessly to build a portfolio of strategic, meaningful partnerships with organizations around the country including NetApp, Cisco, iTalent, the Federal Aviation Administration, Spirit AeroSystems, HyperBorean, and ANSWR.
“And we’ve only scratched the surface,” said Russell. “We look forward to additional growth in 2015 and uncovering opportunities to contribute to the economic well-being of our community, the university and the Innovation Campus.”
New residence hall being considered for WSU's Innovation Campus
The 400- to 600-bed residence hall, slated for occupancy in fall semester 2017, will be constructed south of Eck Stadium as part of the Innovation Campus development.
The complex is expected to be built in phases and could grow to as many as 1,200 beds in the future. It will house sophomores through graduate students in apartment-style rooms.
“We are asking highly experienced development teams to present us with their best ideas for a 24-hour learn-work-live-play environment for students,” Bardo says. “The old idea of campus housing was embodied in traditional dormitories with cinder block walls, bunk beds and bland cafeterias. We need to meet higher expectations to attract and retain high-quality students.”
The residence hall would replace the housing in Fairmount Towers, located at the corner of 21st Street and Hillside.
Highlights of this new facility are expected to include:
A small food shop with dining space for up to 20 people.
A WSU Police substation.
A hotel-style “grab-and-go” convenience shop for miscellaneous grocery items and personal necessities.
A fitness room with treadmills, an aerobics area and machines/free weights.
A theater/game room with a large screen TV, billiards, ping pong and foosball.
A multipurpose room for group student space or use as a nondenominational worship room.
Exterior recreational areas including a sand volleyball court, a half-court hard surface basketball court and a picnic area with tables and grills.
Parking amenities, coordinated with the Innovation Campus master plan.
A climate-controlled enclosed walkway with access to the future adjacent Innovation Center.
Wichita State University is moving forward with consideration of a second new residence hall on its main campus that would house 400 to 600 students, with the option to grow to as many as 1,200.

The first building of the new Innovative campus has started. There will be an announcement shortly about the second building of the Innovative campus housing a single tenant.

Is the tenant one of the companies already announced?

Hasn't this been said for the past several months? I'm excited as the next guy about what Bardo is doing, but the "big news" about a tenant building their own facility as part of the IC has been a carrot hanging out in front of us all for a while now. Either spill the beans or admit a prior over-statement.
