MSN - New space satellite will aid meteorologists in tracking severe weather

At 4:16 p.m. today, NASA and SpaceX are set to launch NOAA’s GOES-U Satellite on top of a Falcon rocket from the Kennedy Space Center.

This satellite is the fourth and final addition to the GOES Satellite series. It will be essential for tracking hurricanes and predicting their intensity, and providing early warnings for severe storms and tornadoes.

The GOES-U Satellite includes refined instruments such as the advanced baseline imager, which offers three times more spectral channels, four times better image quality and five times faster imaging than its predecessors in the series. Additionally, the geostationary lightning mapper enables 24/7 lightning observation.
Some of you understand what these things do or what meteorologists are looking for and such. Does something like this potentially lead to better/more accurate warnings or does this just help them study storms taking place to maybe get better warnings down the road?

            • A month ago from our last severe weather bust in the period when severe weather peaks here in SC Kansas. Tell you how dry it has been. Looks like we will be monitoring the drought the rest of the summer.

We need some serious rainfall upstream of Cheney Lake to get the level back up. I've seen it happen before. About 10-12 years ago Cheney was super low and we were nearing the point of restrictions, then we got some good rain over the course of a few months and the level rose back up. Hope that happens again!
