  • WBJ - 'Premium' multifamily development in the works north of Topgolf

Covering 25.6 acres, the PUD would permit up to 225 residential units "in the form of patio home clusters," according to MAPC documents.

More details will be coming soon, said Jeff Mullen, president and CEO of Ritchie Development, which would lead the project.

"We think it's a premium product," Mullen said.

The PUD, which recently received Citizen Advisory Board approval, as well, allows for a clubhouse, pool and dog park — but elements like the dog park, for example, are not yet certain.

The project still needs to go through the platting process and additional local government approvals. As part of the process, Mullen and Gateway Center, LLC (the property owner) plan to request annexation into the city of Wichita for the land currently in unincorporated Sedgwick County.

Ritchie Development is also the developer behind the Brookfield single-family housing development off of Greenwich between 29th and 37th, just south of Gateway, and north of Topgolf in the rapidly-growing area of the city.
Ritchie has been heavily invested in this land for at least a decade as it prepared for residential development. So much so that when Wichita Public Schools tried to expand their district into what is currently the Circle district, Ritchie argued that the value for them would decrease if they could no longer sell being in Circle. Circle also put on hold the building of Circle-Greenwich until that was all resolved, as Circle was aiming to better serve the western boundary of the district.

I also know that they've recently just expanded Greenwich, and as these developments continue to go in, they'll have to keep expanding the school. There's also been some speculation about the future of Circle, and should it ever split, that a new HS would possibly be built in SG, though I'm guessing Benton would fight to get it built there. But that's a ways off and will only happen if Circle pushes into 5A. It's currently in the top 10 of 4A based on enrollment and around 150 students from being 5A. If Benton ever gains traction on their expansion efforts and the development north of 96 continues, it will eventually happen.

Sorry, I got a little sidetracked there. But I am pretty sure Ritchie still owns quite a bit of land along Greenwich that they have future residential plans for.

        • Sweet! Funding for new trees in public right-of-ways that they never water in that then die.

Love mature trees, and we need more, but planting them and then letting them wither and die is one of more silly budget wastes in this town.

I worked for the city park department for 4 years while at WSU (in the 70s). It payed for my degree and part of my wifes degree. Our small band of 5 or 6 part timers took care of the high maintenance landscape downtown and the city plant nursery. We did the landscaping around Centey II, city buildings, several downtown parks and the riverbank. We had a water truck that we used to water trees we planted in the street medians until they were established enough to absorb sufficient water to maintain themselves. We had to get the fire department authorization to fill up at fire hydrants. Those were fun days - made $3.25 an hour. I got paid for an hours work to start the sprinklers in parks we had just planted new grass before my softball game and then to run by after the game and turn them off. My wife and I could eat a meal at Toco Tico for that.

Rambling, but at least 50 years ago we knew they need watering until mature enough to stand on there own. We didn't lose very many.

                • NHL.com - Sharks Enter Affiliation Agreement With Wichita Thunder

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) announced today that the team has entered into an affiliation agreement with the ECHL's Wichita Thunder for the 2022-23 season.

"We're looking forward to working with the Wichita Thunder, including Head Coach Bruce Ramsay and General Manager Joel T. Lomurno," said Sharks Assistant General Manager and San Jose Barracuda (AHL) General Manager Joe Will. "Having a solid affiliation in the ECHL is important to our player development plan and the ECHL has a solid track record with preparing prospects for their NHL and AHL careers."

The Thunder will be entering their ninth season as a member of the ECHL and 31st season as a franchise, having previously played in the now-defunct Central Hockey League since 1993. Wichita were Central Hockey League champions in 1994 and 1995 and made the Finals in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013 before joining the ECHL in 2014. They finished fourth in the league in the 2020-21 regular season after earning a 41-22-8 record.

Joel T. Lomurno serves as the franchise's general manager and was selected as the ECHL Executive of the Year for 2021-22. Bruce Ramsay serves as the team's head coach and was named ECHL Head Coach and GM of the Year after the 2020-21 season. Matt Brokaw serves as the club's Vice President and the Thunder play in the INTRUST Bank Arena in downtown Wichita.

                  • They would have to secure permission, but the Thunder should have an alternate name/jersey night and be the Sharknados.

I wouldn't think The Asylum or Syfy Films would be above such a promotion.

Maybe it would spur a Sharknado 7: One Last Ride

Hats off to JTMFoods. It's not everyone (anyone) that would invest in that area, willingly or otherwise. They certainly deserve both credit and support.

I thought the developers had transformed the old industrial waste area into a Class A industrial development. Nice development, access to major interstates makes sense.
Nice job to the developers who followed George Bernard Shaw & RFK quote 'Some men see things as they are and ask why, I dream things that never were and ask why not.“

This is true. I wasn't sure how it would work but it's off to a solid start and it sounds like they've had discussions with others who have expressed some interest in being located there.

                              • Sounds like a great kid that can make us all proud. I'm out of the loop but it doesn't seem like you hear about as many of these kids as we used to. It seems like everything today is not about the Team, but about what can happen for me. I wonder if his brother (who was an Eagle Top 11 Player in 2018) continued to play, and where. I hope that this kid gets an opportunity to play if he wants to.
