  • The NFL and Dolphin response has been somewhat vociferous. One could say almost 3G like. Look, I have no idea what did or did not happen.

But it's not about race. He WAS HIRED by Miami. There could be a lot of things wrong, and you would think the NFL has a lot of incentive to make this go away, and digging their heals in doesn't seem like the decision I would expect them to make. They've basically called Coach Flores a liar. This seems a rough way to go in today's world unless you can provide pretty solid proof that he is in fact a liar.

The most plausible scenario, to me, is that something happened (no idea what) that made Coach Flores believe he was unhireable in the future (perhaps something he did or even didn't do) and so his response was Jerky Boys circa 1992 and Sue Everybody with a mix of 2020 racism thrown in.

    • I could be wrong, but isn't the Miami Dolphins GM black? So Flores was fired by a black GM and it's somehow racist. Maybe I am missing something.

      • I think the race stuff has more to do with the Giants and the Broncos and the Rooney Rule. The main thing with the Dolphins is with regards to tanking and tampering.

        • It would be interesting to find out sometime if Flores would have said anything if Bellichick hadn't accidentally texted him regarding the Giants job and basically gave him some ammunition to start a case.

Interesting piece of trivia and some of you probably already know the answer. One of the current WSU basketball players father was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and played for Bellichick there and then wound up his 14 year NFL career by playing for Bellichick in New England and won a couple Super Bowl rings. Anyone know who the player is?

Correct - his dad played for 6 different teams and later on was an assistant coach for the Chiefs and Texans - https://www.brownsnation.com/anthony-pleasant/

                  • I was watching the snow game Brady played in 2002 (I think) against the Raiders and they were showing the plays without the commentary in between (like a game in 90 minutes instead of 3.5 hours) and the starting defensive end was Anthony Pleasant and I was like HEY that's Joe's dad! Which I already knew, but was cool to actually see it.

                    • Joe is built a little like a defensive end or linebacker that is for sure.

                        • And as far as his comments about the Broncos and Elway showing up to the interview hungover, doesn't he always show up to things hungover? Hasn't that been the story on him for years?

I get the point in the Rooney Rule, but there are cases where a minority gets interviewed because they have to and the team has already made a decision. Everyone knew the Chiefs were going to hire Andy when the job opened up and everyone was pretty certain he wanted it. They still had to interview others and I'm sure they knew they weren't getting the job at that point.

It's just straight up wrong to interview folks in bad faith, _especially_ if you are forced to by some terrible policy or law. The only way that behavior stops is for lawsuits to get filed that ultimately get decision makers to recognize and change the policy.

It is actually pretty insulting to minorities if you really think about it. You are telling them that they might not be invited to interview based on merit but solely based on their race to be able to check a box. Foolish.

Exactly. The unintended consequences of liberal feel-good policy is pretty often insulting to minorities. And it happens enough it almost makes you wonder if it's intentional.
