Clearing the trees makes the 2-3 feet of snow go away really fast because the sun can be on it. We've been melting for 2 weeks now and there is still nasty snow in the trees. We have winter for 8 months of the year. When its over, it needs to be over quickly.
The other reason is that I need the ground to melt. The moss on the ground in the trees keeps the mineral dirt frozen well into July, and sometimes it never thaws. If I were to immediately start building this summer, the ground would shift under my foundation as it thaws. A friend of mine just spent $80k injecting concrete below his slab to level it. That is a game I can't afford to play.
