  • Shocks already down a player as practice starts, at least for the non-conference portion of the schedule as Alicia Sanchez is unavailable for now:

WICHITA -- Junior guard Alicia Sanchez will miss at least the non-conference portion of the 2009-10 season due to personal reasons, head women's basketball coach Jody Adams announced late Thursday.

Hard to say how this will impact the team, but from what I've read and heard I assume they were looking to Alicia for a perimeter threat to help replace the outside game lost with Val leaving.

    • Was this the transfer who had some issues about eligibility?

That would be my guess if they are "looking forward to her being available in January."

I thought that was Morgan Boyd the Olathe East product by way of Arkansas-Ft. Smith JUCO who played in one game her freshman season at Middle Tennesse State. I think the Shocks unsuccessfully tried to have that year of eligibility restored under a medical redhsirt request, but AFAIK that failed and Morgan only as 2 years of eligibility left.

Morgan has been quite the traveler already. She signed with Arkansas out of high school, but was allowed to transfer to Middle Tennesse State where she played in the one game as a frehsman then she transferred to Arkansas-Ft. Smith. She was the Kansas Gatorade Female POY in her senior year at Olathe East. Hopefully, we will get 2 good years of production from Morgan.

I don't recall any eligibility issues with Alicia but relying on my ability to know or recall such things is not anything I would strongly recommend.

          • Why doesn't she recruite more people. This is the same thing as last year lack of bodies. She is entitled to 15 recruits and 11 is just not enough

            • She is getting her recruits. The ones that will play the way she wants. It was like with mens two years ago. Stuff happens, but you don't want a bunch of players who don't want to be here. You don't want a bunch of players that don't buy in. You definitely don't want a bunch of players that keep much better players from coming due to lack of scholarships.

Let's see what happens over the next couple of year's. I can see a couple of considerations:

                1. Should you offer a player this year if you think you may be able to bring in a significantly better talent the next year or two. Bodies in and of themselves do not necessarily equate to success as DSB pointed out. Based on Jody's Twitter comments she seems pretty upbeat about how recruiting is going (although you would not excpect anything else from this source).

                2. Some consideration is probably given to trying to keep some balance among classes so as not to graduate all your experience at once and then be faced with another rebuilding project. Ideally, you would probably like to have 3-4 players in each of the 4 years of eligibility.

                3. A full roster of 15 can present some problems keeping everyone happy, although you would hope that you can build to that and then implement a storng red-shirt program.

We need to have a little bit patience with building this program based on where we have been in recent years. Hopefully, this year is just a good first step with many more upward steps to follow.

I talked with Jody about this recently and I got the impression that she would be content with a roster of no more than 13 players. Adding another 2 can cause more problems than it solves.

BTW, Creighton is picked to win the MVC this year with a roster of 10 players. Of course, 7 of those are Juniors and Seniors with a couple 22-23 year olds on the roster.

                  • Recruits

If you've been following Jody Adam's comments on twitter, you should have noticed that she has brought in a number of recruit prospects this fall and I took it that several of them have committed verbally to play here.

She told me they had offered a 2011 and a 2012 already. Did not say anything about the upcoming class of 2010 but as xaz says no doubt some verbal commitments already in hand.

We have 2 seniors so I would expect Jody to bring in 4 more players in the upcoming class to reach her target of 13 and to get a year of experience before the current crop of 4 Juco transfers move on.

She would need to follow that up with another 4 person recruiting class to replace the current Juniors in the class of 2011.
