Other Sunday Games
Missouri State 49-46 at Indiana State
Southern Illinois 63-56 at Illinois State
Bradley 56-52 v Evansville
With a record of 5-4 at the halfway point of the conference schedule, the Shockers are in fourth place alone. They trail Missouri State by one game and are one game ahead of Southern Illinois and Indiana State.

She was on last night at 7:00 following coach Marshall's show; unfortunately, I wasn't able to listen.
I listened to most of it. Linda seems like a very nice person who is very comfortable in her own skin. OTOH, she really has nothing on the line here so there is really no pressure on her. She said she knows the players 1st names and a lot of the nicknames but is still working on last names. Linda was generally very postive and easy to listen to. Was very complementary of the coaching staff she inherited. She is just kind of going with the flow and what the Shocks have in place at this point. Maybe we start to tinker a bit once she gets more familiar with the players strengths and weaknesses. I don't anticipate any major changes.
Not sure what can be gleaned from the current 5-game winning streak where Jody was at the helm for 1 game, Kirk for 2 games and Linda for 2 games. What we do know is that those wins came against teams with a combined record of 30-68 (13-32 in conference play) and an average RPI of 263.
We will get a better feel for whether there is or will be any "Hargrove effect" this Sunday when the 4th place Shocks (10-10, 5-4) host the 3rd place Missouri State Lady Bears (9-10, 6-3). On paper these teams look to be pretty evenly matched but the Shocks looked really bad in a 62-73 loss to MSU on Janaury 6th in Springfield. The game was probably not as close as the final score indicated.
I would say Missouri State has been really up and own this year so I suppose that in Sunday's game a lot will depend on which Lady Bears team shows up. Whichever team shows up the Shocks need to play better than they did in Springfield. The next 7 games are very winnable games for the Lady Shocks (although probably a bit of a long shot for them to actually win all 7). The the real measuring stick will occur at the end of the regular season when the Shocks go on the road to Drake and Northern Iowa .

SIU had Drake tied at 50-all at the end of 3 quarters but Drake pulled away in the 4th quarter winning 71-60 to stay undefeated. It was 71-55 until SIU scored 5 late points.
Northern Iowa was only up 26-24 over Evansville at the half. A 36-12 second half takes care of that. UNI over Evansville 62-36.
Drake and UNI keep rolling although neither team played that well tonight. Perhaps a bit of a hangover from their tough double OT game last week in Cedar Falls.
Shocks host Missouri State on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Not sure the Shocks match up very well with the Lady Bears. At least they sure didn't seem to when they played in Springfield. We'll see.

Way too many fouls (24 v 13) - both Rangie and Angiee fouled out, and it hurt at the end of the game. (What little of the game I was able to watch.)
I have not watched the game either. Based on the game articles and box scores it looks like this game could have gone either way. Rangie filed out with 2:54 remaining (apparently on an offesnive foul) with the game tied at 57-all. The game was tied at 60-all with 1:24 remaining and neither team scored again until the 0:28 mark when MSU hit a free throw after Angiee picked up her 5th foul. The Shocks missed two shots and MSU hit 4 free throws after that including 2 free throws with 2 seconds remaining in the game.
Rangie, Keke and Diamond combined to shoot 15-23 from the floor and 8-10 free throws for 39 of the Shockers 60 points. The other 8 Shockers who played only made 7 of 39 FG attemtps for 18%.
MSU was kind of in the same boat with Hughes, Willard and Gitzen combining for 12-20 from the field and 8-10 fron the line for 35 points. The other 7 Bears who played were 10 of 36 FG attempts for 28%.
Looks to me like the poor shooting by the Shocks group of 8 outside of Rangie, Keke and Diamond did them in. Also the Shocks let Lexi Hughes go off for a season high 22 points. She was averaging 8.4 points per game coming in.
I see Rangie, Sabrina and Keke all played 26 mintues and Diamond played 25 mintues so perhaps HCKH is starting to move away from the platoon system as she becomes more familiar with her personnel.
Seems like it was a game the Shocks could have one and maybe should have won had they just shot the ball better outside of Rangie, Keke and Diamond.
The Shocks are playing for 4th place at this point and could finish as low as 7th. The Shocks are 5-5 with SIU, Indiana State and Bradley all a half game back at 5-6. SIU played Drake tough and beat UNI this past weekend so I would plick them to finish 4th if I was placing a bet. Of course, the main thing is to avoid a 7th place finish that would put them into the play-in round of the Valley Tournament.
The Shocks need to make hay over the next 6 games 4 of which are at home. With Drake and UNI on the road to close out the season the Shocks need to go at least 4-2 in these games. All are winnable. The home game with SIU and the road game at Bradley being the toughest of those 6 games.
Interesting interview with Sabrina last night on the Coach's show. Sabrina is very proficient in signing (sing language). She said it was actually her 1st language because both of her parents and 2 other family members are deaf. She would like to get become a licensed signing interpreter and eventually work with deaf kids at the high school level.
Some of her Shocker teammates have actually picked up some sign language and communicate with each other by signing.
I think this is the 1st time I have ever heard Sabrina being interviewed. She did very well and seems like a very nice, intellgent young lady.
Nice interview with Ta Mike as well. She explained that she learned her patented jump-to-her-feet-from-her-back move from watching Bruce Lee and emulating him although Ta says she has to use he hands and Bruce could do it without using his hands.

In the two games KC coached, the five-and-five was used in the first and second quarters, but not in the second half. Against Indiana State when LH had the reins, the starters lasted about 2:30 in the first quarter before the mass substitution - they had fallen behind 0-7. Typical substitution patterns for the rest of the game. However, back to the five-and-five in the first two quarters against Loyola and Missouri State. But it certainly appears that you earn your time in the second half with your play in the first half.

I have noticed that. The minutes of the top 5 players in terms of playing time in each of the last 5 games is 100, 119, 119, 123 and 124. So they are gradually moving more to a who is playing well and what are our match ups at least in the 2nd half. Of course, foul touble can come into play as well.
With HCLH not having a very deep knowledge of the team's personnel at this point this may be the best way to approach until HCLH gets more comfortable with the team but she may well stick with this approach for the rest of the season. Not much reason to play any of these players more than 25 to 28 minutes a game. Hopefully, this might pay some dividends in the Valley Touranment in terms of depth and fresh legs.
