Watched the replay of the Shocker-MSU game. Shocks should have won that game.

Very interesting starting five for the Shocks tonight against Evansville. Rangie, Angiee and Sabrina plus Keke and Taquandra. I don't think we have had the 3 bigs in the lineup at the same time this year. Plus Taquandra has been running with the 2nd unit since the platoon system was implemented.

Evansville leads the Shocks 21-17 at the end of the 1st quarter. Not wild about the lethargic, passive zone defense the Shocks have been playing.
Halftime Update: Shocks lead 38-37. They switched to a man-to-man defense in the 2nd quarter and while it was better than the zone they played in the 1st quarter this team is not a very good defensive team. A far cry form the total havoc we saw from the Alex Harden - Kelsey Jacobs - Jamillah Bonner lead defense of the Championship years.
I think I may have overrated the athleticism and the basketball skills of this Shocker team. They have just not developed into the team I was hoping to see. Fortunately, that just makes the Shocks just another run-of-the-mill below average team the Valley is loaded with this year.
3rd Quarter Update: Shocks lead 56-53. More of the same.
Final: Shockers 69 - Purple Aces 68. Not sure the Shocks really deserved to win this game but the game winning shot came on what was probably one of the better executed plays of the year. Fittingly, Rangie, who scored 26 points, got the game winner on an excellent pass from Sabrina. Very well designed and executed play.
Rangie played 37 minutes. No platoon system tonight. HCLH new she had an advantage inside and took advantage of it. However, the much smaller Aces outrebounded the Shocks 35-33 and the Shocks defense needs a lot of work. They probably lose this game if they were playing any of the other Top 7 teams in the Valley.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 10, 2017, 11:01 PM.

I don't think playing Rangie, Sabrina and Angiee together is the best way to go. Not enough quickness or foot speed. I like Rangie and Sabrina together with Angiee playing the role of providing them with needed breathers and filling in for foul trouble. Angiee maybe the best athlete but she simply is not a very polished player.
Looks like HCLH likes Keke running the team. Keke does has some nice aspects to her game although her game is reminiscent of Doug Gottlieb's game and teams are backing off and not respecting her shooting ability at all. Diamond Lockhart seems to be the steadiest of the rest. Taquandra does some very good things and some not so very good things. Tamara Lee does not impress me. I like Kayla Williams length at the guard position but she tends to play like the Freshman that she is. Aundra is fundamentally sound but at 5-2 can be taken advantage of on defense. Jaliah Preston looks to me like she is the best shooter among the guards but she apparently has other deficiencies that prevent HCLH from relying on her too much.
The Shocks are dead last among Valley teams in 3-Pt Percentage defense. They leave a lot of opponents wide, wide open on the perimeter.
I would guess the Shocks have missed at least 15 point blank shots in the last two games as well.
The Shocks did take over sole possession of 4th place with the Evansville win tonight. A win over SIU on Sunday will go a long way towards a top 6 finish and avoiding the play-in round of the Valley Tournament.
They will have to play better than they did tonight to beat SIU on Sunday though. SIU has 3 very good players. 2 guards, Kylie Giebelhausen and Rishonda Napier, plus a power forward Kim Nebo. Nebo didn't do much against MSU tonight and I think the Shocks can control her. Not sure the Shocks are equipped to deal with Giebelhausen and Napier though. If the Shocks can control those two guards they have a good shot and knocking of the Salukis.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 10, 2017, 10:36 PM.

The Shocks had short stretches of playing a nice man-defense, switching at the top. And then somebody would lose their man - who seemed to be open under the basket or stationed at the three-point line.
I agree - the basketball IQ on this team is not great - impatient on offense at times, "we are supposed to get the ball inside, so no medium jumpers when inside is not available" at times.
That was a sweet inbounds play for the winning bucket. They ran the same play from the opposite side of the court earlier in the half. LH originally had a play with Rangie inbounding. Evansville called their last timeout, and she switched to the game winner. But Evansville had a really nice look at the end - it was not a shot of the desperation variety.
From your other post: I noticed the same thing about the playing time for Keke. She had 31 minutes and Aundra had nine.
We had a nice refereeing crew tonight. I suspect all of them will be doing Big XII or some Power 5 tomorrow. Lisa, the blond female, has done Final Fours. Amy, the other female, has twelve years experience in the WNBA.

Drake inched by Illinois State at home tonight 101-49 making 12-23 treys in the process. Lizzy Wendel had 22 points in 23 minutes, freshman Becca Hittner had 20 points in 22 minutes and Wichitan Sammie Bachrodt chipped in 13 points in 21 minutes.
If the Shocks go to Drake for the regular season finale and play defense like they did tonight things could get really ugly, really fast.

Maybe too many Juco players in the mix that still exhibit a bit too much of undisciplined juco play. I don't know. With 4 seniors (not including Jaleesa Chapel) and 7 juniors this is not a young team in terms of chronology. However, it is a pretty inexperienced team in terms of D-1 experience especially with Jaleesa on the shelf). All 4 of the seniors and 4 of the juniors are juco transfers.
With 9 players returning next year (assuming all return) the cabinet would not seem to be empty although hard to guage what the ceiling for next year's team would be. But the new Shocker head coach will have a challenge filliing the cabinet after next season. Jody was going to be facing the same challenge and with her reputation on the recruiting circuit no doubt somewhat tarnished perhpas she could see the writing on the wall. I am not a fan of trying to or having to build a D-1 women's program primarily on Jucos.
Of the 14 players remaining on the roster Jody has signed 4 of them (Jaleesa, Aundra, Sabrina and Kayla) out of hight school.
I think D-1 transfers such as Rangie and Diamond are okay, In fact, picking up a couple of those this offseason might not be a bad thing even with them having to sit out next year. But those are kind of hit and miss and you never know when and if a player that fits you needs will be available or interested. Even a couple graduate transfers at the end of next season might be useful.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 13, 2017, 01:31 PM.
