  • 2016 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials

The women's 10,000m run in the U.S. Olympic Team Track and Field Trials is schedule for Saturday, July 2nd at 1:00 pm CDT in Tracktown USA (Eugene, OR). It appears the race will be on NBC.

So why is this significant to Shocker fans? There will be two former Shocker athletes competing in this race.

Kellyn (Johnson) Taylor who ran for WSU from 2007 - 2009 and Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton who ran for WSU from 2011 - 2013 (and who received her U.S. citizenship on April 29th of this year) will be competing in this race.

I believe the top 3 finishers qualify for the U.S. team. Kellyn has the 4th best qualifying time at 31:40.70 and Aliphine has the 10th fastest qualifying time at 31:54.20.

ouse of Run Interview of Aliphine Interview starts at around the 30:30 mark and runs for about 30 minutes. Very worthwhile and entertaining listen.

Good luck Kellyn and Aliphine. Shocker Proud. :poster_wu:

Austin is listed as having the 15th best decathlon mark and Damien is listed as having the 18th best javelin mark but both are currently shown as not qualified. I am not exactly sure what "not qualified" means.

      I
n any case good luck to both if they are, in fact, competing at the trials.

IIRC Preston Carrington made the U.S. Olympic team in the long jump. Not sure how many other Shocker Track and Field Olympians, if any, that we have had.

One's first guess would be that "not qualified" means the Olympic qualifying standard has not been met. But that standard for the men's javelin is 83 meters. So my next guess is that there is an United State Olympic Trials qualifying standard. The last qualifier is at 78.03 meters and the first non-qualifier is at 76.74 meters, implying that standard is 78 (or 77) meters. So you can enter the Trials but must meet the qualifying standard in some other competition before you can actually compete?

The U.S. Olympic trial standards are 77m in the javelin and 7,900 points in the decathlon.

Apparently, the USOC can set their standards wherever they like as long as they don't exceed the Olympic qualifying standards. The 2016 Olympic standards are 83m for the javelin and 8,100 points in the decathlon.

From what I can tell the USOC standards are used for determining automatic qualifiers for the US Trials. However, the USOC can fill out the desired field size with athletes who do not meet the automatic qualifying standard. The javelin field is set at 24 and the decathlon field is set at 18. Therefore, athletes who do not meet the automatic qualifying standard may enter and declare an intent to compete but those must be accepted by the USOC. The USOC will generally go down the list of non-qualified entrants deep enough to fill out the stated field size. I believe athletes have until June 26th to put up a qualifying mark or improve their nonqualifying mark.

If a NOC has no athletes that meet the Olympic qualifying mark they may send one athlete in each event to the Olympics.

In the decathlon 10 athletes have automatically qualified for the US Trials and 6 of those athletes have already met the Olympic qualifying standards. Right now Austin Bahner, at #15, would be one of the 8 non-qualifiers added to the USOT field of 18.

In the javelin 10 athletes have automatically qualified for the US Trials but only 3 have throws that meet the Olympic qualifying standard. Right now Damien Odle, at #18, would be one of the 14 non-qualifiers added to the USOT field of 24.

In the women's 10K 26 athletes have qualifying marks for a field of 24 so I guess 2 athletes with qualifying marks will be left out.

Personally, I have virtually no standards.

1972Shocker is correct. Bahner and Odle will get in as they fill the field sizes out. Jared Belardo has a chance as well in the LJ but won't know until closer to the declaration period.

There have been many Shocker Olympians in T&F (most recent Ineta Radevica who finished 4th in the Long Jump in 2012). I believe there have been about a dozen through the years. Hopefully that total will be added to this year!

Austin has a time of 10.84 in the 100m, the tenth fastest time. That time scores 897 points.

                      Long jump is next.

Indeed. Both ladies up front about half way through the race.

They dropped 1 and now both are in the top 5.

Really good chance at this point at least 1 Shocker could qualify for the 10K here.
