  • WBB - Virgin Islands Paradise Jam - Thanksgiving Weekend

I guess if you going to have to go to work over the Thanksgiving weekend it could be worse then being assigned to the Virgin Islands.

Not sure about calling a women's tournament a Paradise Jam because your chances of seeing dunk are pretty much zilch. Maybe they should call it the Paradise Jelly.

In any case the Shocks take on FGCU at 2:30pm CST on Thanksgiving Day, Ohio State at 12:15pm on Friday and Clemson at 12:15pm on Saturday. A good proxy for what the might face at year-end in the Valley Tournament except with stronger overall competition in the VI.

FGCU owns an 88-75 win over GW, a 97-49 win over Florida Intl and a 102-54 win over Ave Maria (NAIA Division II). Their one loss was at Auburn by a 72-69 score.

Looks like FGCU can score a little. FGCU likes to play long-ball as they have put up 72 treys in their 3 D-1 games making 41.7%. The Shocks are 14-38 for 36.8% in their 3 games. FGCU has also hit solid 50 of 64 FT's for 78.1% vs 32-49 for 65.3% for the Shocks. They have a very good team assist (50) to turnover (40) ratio of 1.25 compared to the Shocks 38/39 = 0.97. FGCU has been outrebounded by an average 9 boards a game. Here is their roster and their stats.

Ohio State is 2-2 with home wins over St. Francis (PA) and VCU and a home loss to Goergia and a road lost at Virginia.

While Ohio State has some good size, including a 6-6 So C, it looks like they are getting about 65 points a game from their guards. Looks like they are only going about 7 deep. Here is their roster and their stats.

Clemson is 3-1 with home wins over UNC-Greensboro, Troy and Furman and a 58-point road loss at #1 ranked South Carolina.

Size-wise Clemson starting 5 is comparable to the Shockers starting 5. They do have a 6-4 Fr C that plays about 16 MPG. Looks like Clemson plays about 9-deep. Here is Clemson's roster and stats.

This will be an interesting and a tough weekend for the Lady Shocks. Really hard to say how we will do with this competition. A really good opportunity for the Shocks to build their RPI and perhaps make up for the loss at EWU.

The Shocks played very poorly offensively in the 1st half and trail FGCU 26-13 and the only reason it's that close is because Aundra Stovall hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Shocks are 5-26 (2-11) from the field in the 1st half. Quite frankly they are very fortunate that they are only down 13. FGCU hasn't been all that impressive.

Seriously....we're down 30? Is something broken here folks? I understand losing, and as thin as we are, fatigue. But 30?

          Final FGCU 56 - WSU 39

About the only brief bright spot I saw was Kelsey Jacobs taking the ball to the basket a couple of times late in the game. However, at that point the game was over (FGCU led 51-22 with 8:45 remaining in the game).

Is something broken? Today everything was broken.

Points off turnovers: FGCU 24 - WSU 3. Of course, the Shockers weren't scoring off of much of anything but they did have 20 turnovers.

The Shocks simply could not make shots.

Shouldn't be fatigue this early in the season and in the 1st game of the tournament. 3rd game of the tournament maybe, but not today unless that boot camp business has zapped them energy-wise. However, this is two big super-stinkers the Shocks have dropped this year. This one on a neutral court and the road game at EWU and we are just now getting into the tough part of the non-con schedule. Kind of wishing we had not scheduled Tennessee at this point. What are the Volunteers going to do to this team? If you think today was ugly it may very well get worse before we get into Valley play.

To state the obvious I suppose, at this point we play well enough at home and not very well at all away from home.

Why is a question we need to get answered soon.

Yep. Playing poorly on the road was a constant issue during Jane Albright's tenure but not so much with Jody. Although 2-years ago we really struggled to score at the Cancun Tournament scoring 44, 46 and 58 points in 3 losses. Maybe we just can't deal with beautiful weather and the ocean views and beaches.

FGC had us scouted. Double and triple Alex. We have zero half court offense. Kelsey was open all game inside but only passed inside a few times. Bonner was out of control. We can't depend on a dribble drive offense. Our next two games will be tough.

Yeah, you could tell they had spent plenty of time studying the Eastern Washington tape.

To make things more confusing, we are now beating Ohio State 34-23 at the half.

Anyone else find the audio impossible to listen to or is it my feed?

Yeah, it is pretty scratchy. And Alex picks up a foolish fourth foul with 9+ remaining.

The total fouls are really low, so I would guess we have been playing zone the entire game. People in the house, so I just check in very occasionally.
