Creighton poinded Drake 98-71 in Des Moines today to finish the 1st half of Valley play at 8-1 with their only loss to the Shocks in Koch Arena. Shocks need to take care of business tomorrow against Indiana State to maintain sole possession of 1st place at the halfway mark. Hopefully, they won't let the Sycamore women do what the Sycamore Men did to our Shockers at home.
Watched the replay of the Illinois State game to see what may have happened to Chynna. She left the game at around the 18:30 mark, kind of shaking her head, after guarding Janae Smith on the low post. The ball went into Smith but I really didn't see much, if any, contact. Smith might of caught her on the nose with the back of her shoulder, but if she did (and I'm not at all sure about that) it didn't seem to amount to much. In any case, Chynna did not return after that. The team trainer was checking her out. Perhaps Chynna became ill. Just don't know. One of the funnier things about the TV broadcast was how the color analyst get saying how Janae Smith was somehwat undersized. Yeah, right. Maybe against Baylor but not for MVC women's basketball.
If anyone should be feeling beat up tomorrow it would be Michelle Price after going flying over the scorer's table and then being laid at after accelerating into a very solid pick as she turned the corner. That one looked like the ILS' players shoulder caught Michelle square in the jaw. I don't think there was anything particularyl dirty about the pick. Michelle simply did not see it. Michelle did get up though and came back in the game later.
Hopefully, Chynna will be good to go tomorrow. She has been playing pretty well in recent games.

On paper Indiana State looks to be fairly similar to Illinois State in that the go about 8 deep and rely primarily on a trio of key players.
Anna Munn, a 5-10 Jr. G, leads INS in scoring at 15.6 PPG. She takes about 26% of the teams shot attempts. Of her 262 shot attempts, she has taken 162 treys hitting 51 of them for 31.5%. Her average of 9 trey attempts per game is just shy of the 10 attmepts per game that the Shocks have averaged this season. She is shooting 84% from the FT line. She is second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 PPG. Calling Alex Harden, calling Alex Harden. We have an assignment for you.
Racheal Mahan, a 6-1 So F, scores 13.1 PPG (13.8 in MVC games) and averages a team leading 8 RPG. She has attempted no treys on the year and is a 70% FT shooter in MVC games, but only 60% overall.
Taylor Whitley, a 5-9 Sr G, scores 10.1 PPG (11.3 in MVC games). She only shoots about 1 trey per game but gets to the FT line pretty frequently where she is hitting 83% in MVC games so she apparently likes to drive to the basket.
Among the remaining role players Kasey Johnson, a 5-8 Fr guard, is second in 3-point attempts behind Munn hitting 16-49 for 32.7%. Jessica Valley, a 5-9 So G, is second on the team in rebounding at 6.6 per game (7.7 in MVC games).
Indiana State is 4-4 in MVC play. Losing at CU by 19, UNI by 2, EU by 1 and at ILS by 1. Wins were over BU by 1, at Drake by 18, SIU by 15 and at MSU by 4. Kind of a mixed bag, but looks like a team that could give the Shocks a tough game, especially if the Shocks don't bring their A game.
Shocks need to avoid a let down after the big win over Illinois State on Friday.

Shocks need to hold serve at home and maintain as much a cushion as possible. Even if they win this game they will only be one game ahead of Creighton.
Furthermore, the Shocks play 5 of the remaining 9 MVC games on the road including at Creighton and the final 3 games of the regular season at Illinois State, at Indiana State and at Missouri State. All tough places to win.

Well it certainly wasn't a thing of beauty, but the Lady Shocks did manage to hold serve today with a 53-46 win over a pesky Indiana State team. The Shocks defensively were very good most of the game with a few execptions (several under the basket inbounds plays that INS converted into easy layups for example).
I didn't think the Shocks were all that bad running their offense the simply did not shoot the ball well very well generally. However, the big issue was with ball security. The Shocks had 18 turnovers with a majority of those on passes being forced into areas that simply were not open.
Freshman Michaela Dapprich had a give and take game. She scored a game high 16 points on 6-11 FGs and 4-6 FTs and she also lead the Shocks in rebounds with 8. However, Michaela also had 7 turnovers and I thing just about every one was trying to force a pass to a well-guarded teammate. Still Michaela plays very hard and gets the most out of her 5'10" frame. Once she develops a little patience and learns the difference between an open teammate and a guarded teammate and improves her shot selection a bit she will be a very solid player for the Shocks. If she was 6-2 she would be a scary sight for Valley teams.
Alex Harden also had 4 turnovers and again at least 2 that I recall were trying to force a pass into the teeth of the defense. However, Alex was heroic in defending Anna Munn who did score 14 points but need 13 shots to get there and 6 of her points came on runouts on 2 open treys following INS breaking the press or getting a turnover. INS uses Munn very much like Evansille uses Colt Ryan. They run her through a myriad of screens and picks and Alex overall did a darn good job on Munn. Alex also stepped up nicely down the stretch hitting a jumper from the corner at the 3:37 mark after INS had cut what had been an 11 point Shocker lead (at the 12 minute mark) down to 3 giving the Shocks a 47-42 lead. Alex followed that with 2 FT's on a one-and-one to put the Shocks up 49-42. After Jessica had her 38 consecutive FT string broken when she uncharacteristly missed 2 FT's, Alex followed an INS basket with 2 more FT's to keep the Shocks up by 7 at 51-44 with 38 seconds to go in the game. Kesley knocked down 2 FT's with 15 seconds remaining to seal the deal for the Shocks.
Jessica did not have big scoring night. I think INS was not going to let Jessica beat them. However, Jessica did have 7 assists and only 1 turnover. Alex also chipped in 5 assets, so despite the 4 turnovers she had, Alex still ha a positive assist to turnover ratio.
So we had Chynna out with a concussion. Not sure she was even in the arena. Michelle only played 5 minutes and Nicole only played 1 minute. Not sure if Michelle may have been feeling the effects of the blow she took Friday against ILS. How she could not have a concussion from that is beyond me. The Lady Shocks doing their best impression of the Shocker Men in fighting through some adversity on the infury front. Let's hope they can hold up for the second half of Valley play.
In the meantime, congrats on a school record 9-0 start. Now let's get healthy, get smart and keep playing hard.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 3, 2013, 06:11 PM.

CU 8-1
EU 5-4
ILS 5-4
UNI 5-4
INS 4-5
BU 3-6
MSU 3-6
DU 2-7
SIU 1-8
The Shocks get UNI and BU at home next weekend the they play 5 of their final 7 games on the road including @CU, @ILS, @INS and @MSU. That will be a tough stretch. Hopefully, we are fully healthy when we get to that meatgrinder of a finish.
Creighton plays @INS and @ILS next weekend which may be the toughest road swing in the Valley this year. Hopefully, one or both of these teams can knock off CU at home. This would give the Shocks a little cushion heading into the final 7 games assuming the Shocks can hold serve at home next weekend agaisnt UNI and BU. Creighton has 5 of its last 7 games at home, just the opposite of the Shocks.
Lot of work to do yet before the Shocks can hang a banner.

I thought we saw the effect if Chynna's absence in the turnovers. She does so many little things to make the offense run smoothly (and avoids the kind of passes Cap struggled with). There is a reason she had been the only player to start every game for us prior to today.
On another note, for all the flack that officials usually take (and often deservedly so), it is only fair to mention that I thought this crew did a good job."Cotton scared me - I left him alone." - B4MSU (Bear Nation poster) in reference to heckling players
