I'd be at every game with someone like this leading the way.
    ABSOLUTELY.

@UCF. Shocks down 4.....the officiating is SO bad in women's basketball.

A WSU player is ridden by a UCF player on a drive, she shoots, no call. On the rebound a foul is called on a WSU player over the back (good call) and the UCF player swings her elbows hitting a WSU player. They review it. 2 shots for UCF (original call no change or additional upgrade). You could tell they knew they screwed up.

17-13 UCF after 1. Shocks hanging in there, but if feels tenuous at best.

Keitha decided it was time to unleash Ambah Kowcun on the Knights today, giving the junior from Australia who has played just 71 minutes all season, her first start of the year.

It has been an ugly half. Both teams can't move the ball and lack of hand/foot/eye coordination is making for a foul/turnover fest.

Shocks pissed away a 26-22 lead with turnovers and terrible shot selection and trail 28-26 at halftime. Shocks with 11 turnovers.

Kowcun is 2-2 from 3 and has 6 points.

Jane Asinde picked up 2 fouls and sat most of the half 0 points 0 boards.

a repeat of 30%/20%/57% and 11 TOs probably means UCF picks up their 1st conference win. If Jane plays to her potential and stays out of foul trouble, and WSU can just make open shots, they should win this game...but it's women's basketball and anything is possible.

Having Jane in the game is making a world of difference.

She drew a foul, made 2 FTs, scored on a driving layup, drew another foul (making 2 more) and has played good defense and has a couple of assists as WSU has turned a 2 point deficit into a 5 point lead halfway through the 3rd quarter.

UCF shooting lights out this quarter (75%) and back to back triples make is 43-42 Knights at the media timeout.

Shocks can't stop Destiny Thomas for UCF. She's averaging 11 points on the season and has 19 and 7 still in the 3rd quarter.

              More questionable officiating (both ways).

Just getting killed on the boards (stats say 28-25 but it seems much worse than that). Kowcun sticks a rainbow 3 at the buzzer (4-4 3-3 from 3 on the game) and the last 10 minutes will decide this game. 47 all after 3.

54-52 Knights, timeout Shocks. Shocks losing the hustle plays. Thomas for UCF with 21 and 8 and Asinde for WSU with 11 and 3 in 14 minutes (all 2nd half) leading the way. 6:21 remaining.

The simplest adjustments and execution will win for WSU. But will it happen?

Really poor play down the stretch by both teams. After Thomas made 1 of 2 FTs to give the Knights the lead, Asinde follows in her own miss to give the Shocks the lead 56-55.

McCarty fouls Thomas (again) and she gives the Knights the lead with 2 more FTs 57-56 with 1:20 to go.

Asinde drives and misses a 1 foot bunny that might cost them the game. Turnover UCF. 43 seconds. Somehow WSU has 2 timeouts still left and they take one at 41 seconds. 57-56 UCF.

Shocks very casual with the time down 1, eventually McCarty gives a great ball fake and is WIDE OPEN from 1 foot and completely blows the open, unguarded layup. Jane gets the board but loses it and a jump ball goes to UCF. 14 seconds and WSU down 1.

Thomas UCF 24 points 13 boards.

Asinde 13 and 8 all in the 2nd half.

I mentioned the Shocks casual with the time trailing, also no idea that they might need to foul (they did) and weren't in the bonus so they had to waste time fouling.

UCF with a terrible unforced turnover. Shocks call timeout and throws it away SMH. Shocks foul, UCF makes both.

UCF SHOULD FOUL but they're also too stupid and poorly coached to know which end is up (they had 2 to give and only feared a 3) so of course WSU gets a 3 (I think McCarty had a foot on the line) but didn't matter as they miss and lose.

Poorly played, poorly executed and another loss.

I wasn't able to watch the game in real time but based on your descripiton and the play-by-play it appears the game slowed to a crawl in the final 6:30 with UCF only putting up 5 points and the Shocks managing only 4. UCF did not make a field goal, going 0-6) in the final 6:30 but were 5-6 from the free throw line and turned it over 4 times. The Shocks were 2-11 from the field and did not get to the line and turned it over 3 times (twice in the final 15 seconds).

Both teams has 23 turnovers adding to the sloppiness of the game. UCF had 16 assists on 21 baskets while the Shocks only had 8 assists on 22 baskets.

UCF pretty much won the game at the free throw line hitting 14-22 to 9-13 for the Shocks.

Ambah Kowcun had a nice first start scoring 11 points in 30 minutes of play on 4-5 shooting including 3-4 on 3-pointers. The Shocks can certainly use a threat from outside. The rest of the team was 0-8 on 3-pointers today. Whether or not Ambah can continue that remains to be seen, especially once she find her way into the scouting reports.

Shamaryah Duncan lost her starting spot but ending up playing the 2nd most minutes for the Shocks with 33 minutes and chipped in 4-8 from the field and 1-1 from the line..

Trajata Colbert was solid scoring 13 points on 6-8 from the field and 1-2 from the line and grabbed 7 rebounds in 35 minutes of play. Jane Asinde, despite playing only 20 minutes due to 1st half foul trouble also scored 13 points and 8 rebounds. On the negative side both Trajata and Jane had 5 turnovers.

DH McCarty chipped in 10 points but was only 4-14 from the field and 2-4 from the line so not a very efficient day on offense and while she had 6 steals she turned it over 4 times and only had 1 assist.

These 5 players accounted for all of the scoring by the Shocks. Daniela Abies played 20 minutes, mostly in relief of Jane and while she did grab 7 rebounds she failed to score and was 0-5 from the field.

Shocks next play SMU on Wednesday and ECU on Saturday both at home. SMU and ECU are both 3-2 in the AAC and SMU beat ECU 68-66 in overtime in Dallas yesterday. So these would seem to team of similar strength. The Shocks will be underdogs in both games but are capable of pulling an upset in one or both games. SMU lost AAC road games to Houston by 16 and Memphis by 21 and are only 2-5 overall in road games. ECU lost to Tulsa by 8 in addition to the OT loss to SMU. ECU beat Tulane at home by 10. I am still not sold on the strength of the AAC outside of USF. No reason the Shocks cannot be competitive in the rest of their AAC games. Whether they will be or not remains to be seen.

                  Still showing improvement?

Im sorry but with that putrid non-conference schedule, you couldn’t tell if improvement was going on.

Keitha should be on the same ship with IB but I doubt Saal is gonna make a move and pay out a buyout on women’s basketball. Another great contract extension biting WSU in the ass by the previous moron of an athletic director.

I thought the Shocks actually played a pretty decent game with the possible exception of the high turnovers. UCF had a signficant sized advantage and were pretty athletic. They seem to be underperforming with their coaching change. Makes you wonder what the outcome would have been if Asinde had been able to play more in the first half. UCF's size and Jane's early foul trouble probably the key factors in this loss.

I think one reason Ambah got her first start in this one was so the Shocks would match up a little better with the size of UCF. She responded well. This was a tough lineup for the diminutive Nhug to deal with.

I will stand by my improvement comments, regardless of the early competition.

This team has improved. But they had a LOT of room for it. But at the same time, this is a team that relies heavily on 3 seniors, Asinde, Colbert & Dean who will be gone next year and have no replacements waiting in the wings. And it's not like we're great to start with....I advocated for a change last year, and nothing has happened to change that opinion (nor do I think it will happen or even could happen).

Keitha is only on contract for 1 more season, so getting rid of that won't be too painful (negotiate that down to 250 or something).

Are you sure that Jane Asinde won't be back. This is her 4th year of collegiate basketball (2 at Juco and 2 at WSU). I thinking she has an extra covid year if she wants it. I just don't know if she wants it.

This does appear to be it for Trajata Colbert and Curtessia Dean.

Daniela Abies has been looking better lately and she is probably ahead of where Trajata was a a freshman. However. Abies is listed at 6' which is on the small side for a 5. Ella Aciaux seems to be a terrific young lady but it doesn't look like it's going to happen for her.

Not sure what has happened to Curtessia Dean. She averaged 10.5 points per game in the non-con (yeah, the weak schedule) but she has scored a total of 9 points in the 5 AAC games and only played 8 minutes against UCF. Could be as simple as tougher defenses and athletes she is facing plus AAC teams scouting her more thoroughly.

Ornella Niankan is list at 6-1, the same as Jane, but to me she is clearly shorter and not as long as Jane. Look at the roster photo where Jane and Ornella are side by side.
https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster - Ornella is probably closer to 5-11.

As for as HCKA goes I'm just not sure with women's basketball that one more year will make much difference and HCKA has no reason to accept a lower buyout. But she can see the writing on the wall so may be she will be proactive and make a move on her own but I can't see anyone paying her close to what WSU owes her.

HCKA did sign 5 players in November 4 of which are foreign players with 2 of those 2-year juco players from New Mexico College although the best signee may be a 5-11 guard out of he Dallas area. Unfortunately, the emphasis on recruiting foreign players has generally not paid off, Jane Asinde not withstanding and Jane was a 2-year juco player. HCKA certainly can't say she wasn't given a fair chance.

I'm only basing my opinion on listening to Jane on Paul's podcast. She sounded so sharp and mature, I just didn't think it sounded like she'd be back for another season.

As for a buyout, I'm certain the language is the same as with others and she'll have to look for another job and report weekly her findings to get the entire contract, or have the amount reduced by similar work, or agree to a lower number with no stipulations, which almost everyone does.

I like Keitha and have enjoyed my interactions with her and I believe she's a good person. And I don't expect the level of success or think she should be subjected to the scrutiny that men's basketball or baseball should when it comes to wins and losses.

But the product needs to be good in some measure, and I think it falls short in too many places to continue.

Would be interesting to compare Keitha's salary with that of the other coaches in the AAC.

Don't hold me accountable for being wrong:

                              A quick search shows:

                              UCF 625,000
Cincinnati 400,000 (maybe reduced to 360,000 based on $250,000 buy from WKU)
                              Houston $310,000
                              Memphis $285,000
                              WSU $360,000

The amounts of these contracts that are tied to Title IX, social justice etc cannot be calculated. But it's large.

2021 are the latest salaries to be found. Her salary compares very, very, very well. Caveats: Some schools are not part of a state system, so salaries are not a public record. Some coaches have just started at their school and salaries are not available yet. A salary may not be all of the compensation - camps, etc, could well be part of it. Therefore, we may not be comparing apples to oranges in all cases.

EDIT: The Good Doctor and I were clearly using different data sets. I didn't spend a lot of time on it, so I may not have used the best data.
