Women and men both with 25 turnovers today. Gee whiz!
Holy Smokes!! Yipes Stripes Beechnut Gum!!!
Yes, but the women were able to do it in regulation and the Shocker men had to go 2 overtimes to get it done. Plus the Shocker women turned it over 27 times against ECU at home so they are getting better.
BTW, DJ McCarty only played 13 minutes against ECU. She subbed out at the end of the 1st quarter with no points and 1 foul. She returned to the lineup with 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter and picked up her 2nd foul a minute later and went to the bend for the final for the rest of the 2nd quarter. She started the 3rd quarter and picked up her 3rd foul 1:30 into the quarter. HCKA let her in the game. 20 seconds later she picked up her 4th foul trying to tie up an ECU player, said something the ref did not like and got T'd up for her 5th foul.
Not sure how much of an impact, this had on the game, as DJ was in the game the entire first quarter when the ECU built a 16-5 lead. Nhug was pretty much overmatched physically in this game and did not play very well. Curtessia Dean was back after missing the last 4 games with a concussion but she only played 12 minutes and only scored 2 points. Jeniah Thompson, who only played 10 minutes total in the last 4 games, played 13 minutes against ECU. She did score 8 points including 4-4 from the line but she also turned it over 4 times and committed 4 fouls in that time.
Shocks are 4-8 with 4 to play. The top 5 AAC teams get a 1st round bye AAC Tournament. The bottom 6 get to play what amounts to a play in game and would have to win 4 games in 4 days to win the tournament. The Shocks don't have bottom 6 locked up mathematically yet but with 4 games to play they are 3 games out of 5th place. So their chances of avoiding that play-in round are between slim and none. The remaining games are vs Tulsa, @ SMU, vs Temple and @ Houston. At the very most I see the Shocks splitting those 4 games and they could easily lose all 4.
Indeed he does and I have no idea what kind of hand he is holding financially. Doe ADKS even know what the media revenues will be like for the new AAC? If that is a poor hand, which is more probable than not, he may chose to fold when it comes to WBB and let HCKA finish off her current contract before making a change. Letting her do so would have little financial effect other than saving whatever her buyout would be. Who knows maybe she finally has decent year next year and saves her job assuming she is willing to take a significantly restructured contract. But if we Jane Asinde does not return for her extra Covid year and the team has to replace both her and Trajata Colbert that will be quite a challenge. And I don't think the new AAC will have much of an impact one way or the other.
You may have insights I am not privy to but at this point I would actually be little surprised if they cut HCKA loose after this season.
The American media deal isn't set to change at all. Current members will continue making what they've been contracted for while the incoming programs will split what the three leaving members were set to make. So there shouldn't be any change in what Wichita is due to make for the next decade as the current media deal with ESPN is good through 2031 I believe.
If I remember correctly. that ends up being roughly 2.8M a year. That may be the average over the bulk of the contract as I believe it escalates. I know 7M is what the full football playing members were set to receive and Wichita gets 40% of that as a non-football playing member.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Led by second year head coach Angie Nelp, Tulsa enters Wednesday's matchup at 16-8 this season and 6-5 in American play. Tulsa boasts a high-scoring offense, averaging 72.0 points on 42.5 percent shooting. The Golden Hurricane are one of the nation's top teams in three-point shooting, as they rank second nationally in three-point attempts and third in three-pointers made. Tulsa also ranks top 40 nationally in assists, field goal defense, defensive rebounds per game, blocks per game and three-point defense. Temira Poindexter leads Tulsa in scoring at 16.1 points followed by Delanie Crawford at 11.5, Maya Mayberry at 11.0 and Maddie Bittle at 10.8 points per game.
LAST MEETING
Behind a big fourth quarter comeback, Tulsa won the first meeting this season in Tulsa, 70-63, on Jan. 4. Wichita State entered the fourth quarter with a seven-point lead, but the Hurricane outscored the Shockers, 28-14 in the final 10 minutes. Tulsa hit a season-high 12 three-pointers against the Shockers. Trajata Colbert scored a team-high 11 points, followed by DJ McCarty with 10. Jane Asinde pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Tulsa got off to a hot start in AAC play winning their first 5 games. However, they have since lost 5 of 6. Tulsa tries to outscore you and they rely heavily on shooting 3's.as they average 30 3-point attempts per game and just under half of their FG attempts are 3-pointers. If there ever was a team that lives and dies by the 3-pointers this is it. That was borne out in the 1st game against the Shockers where the Shocks had the lead and the momentum heading into the 4th quarter in Tulsa and Tulsa got hot from three to turn a 7 point deficit into a 7 point win. Lately, though it has not been working as well for them.
So this will definitely be another game of the Shockers inside game led by Jane Asinde and Trajata Colbert and Tulsa's outside game. Definitely a winnable game for the Shocks especially if Tulsa is only so-so with their perimeter shooting.

Speaking of revenue, does anyone know what is happening to NCAA shares when UC, UCF and most importantly UH, obviously, leave for the B12? Certainly would be nice to keep UH's conference half (or more) for the next few years. Even better if UH makes yet another deep run in the tourney come March/April.
(Realization that this season is just 6 or so games and 3 short weeks from being over......sigh)

I would think that generally speaking, the conference would take those shares and split them amongst the remaining teams. Granted, that wouldn't be a very large amount when split, but one would think it would be a small boost in payments to the remaining schools. The conference is in charge of all of that and Houston can't take it with them. Not that they need it with the payday they're going to be receiving.

Blind squirrel finds acorn. The Shocks led the entire way and outscored Tulsa 28-16 in the 4th quarter for a 84-68 win as Tulsa has now lost 6 of its last 7 games. 35 of Tulsa's 56 shots were 3-point attempts of which they only made 10.
Percentage-wise the Shocks were worse on 3 pointers hitting only 3-14 but overall they got 10 more shots than Tulsa didi primarily due to a 44-28 rebound advantage as the Shocks made 27-52 two point shots compared to Tulsa's 11-21.
Jane and Trajata both had double doubles in points and rebounds as they combined to score 48 points on 18-31 from the field (no 3-point attempts) and 12-14 from the free throw line while grabbing a combined 26 rebounds (12 off the offensive boards). The Shocks outscored Tulsa 15-2 on second chance points and by 5 points at the free throw line.
DJ McCarty had her best game in a while with 13 points on 5-12 shooting, 4 assists vs only 1 turnover, 4 steals and the Shockers only block of the game. Ambah Kowcun chipped in 10 points.
Believe it or not the Shockers (5-8) still have a mathematical chance of a top 5 finish which would give them a 1st round bye in the AAC Tournament. However, that would probably require the to win all 3 of their remaining games @SMU (6-5), vs Temple (5-7) and @ Houston (7-4). Whether those chances are realistic are not is debatable as the Shocks have yet to win 2 consecutive games in AAC play. But it is not impossible.
The Shocks beat SMU earlier in the season 73-65 at home, they lost to Temple in Philly 59-72 but Temple is on a 3 game losing streak that includes a home to last place Cincinnati. They only play Houston once this season. This one will be tough. Houston lost to league leader USF by 2 at home and then beat them by 2 at USF to hand USF it's only loss in AAC play to date.
That would bring the Shocks to 8-8 and that just might do it. If they go 2-1 (with the loss to Houston) in these games they might still have a shot at 7-9 but an awful lot of things will have to go their way.as SMU, Tulsa and Temple are in front of them at this point.
SMU (6-5), in addition to the WSU game, has games @USF (12-1), vs Memphis (7-4) and @Temple (5-7). SMU also had a game @ UCF scheduled for February 1st postponed due to the ice storm in Dallas. That has not yet been rescheduled and not sure if it will be. If the Shockers beat SMU next Wednesday they will hold the tiebreaker over SMU.
Tulsa (6-6) and losers of 6 of their last 7 games with the only win in that stretch at home over last place Cincinnati has games vs Memphis (7-4), @USF (12-1), @Houston (7-4), and vs UCF (2-9). Tulsa could easily go 1-3 in those games.
Temple (5-7) has games remaining vs Houston (7-4), @UCF, wsu (5-8) and vs SMU (6-5). If Temple beats the Shocks and wins one other game that would eliminate the Shockers chances at a top 5 finish as the worst they could do would be 7-9 and the best the Shocks could do would be 7-9 and Temple would hold the tiebreaker.
At a minimum the Shocks need to beat both SMU and Temple to have any chance of a top 5 finish and those chances would be pretty slim.
Things didn't go so well against SMU in Dallas as the Shocks lost 51-69.
The Shocks were outrebound 42-27, a season worst negative differential.
Too add injury to insult the oft injured DJ McCarty went down with an ankle injury with 8 minutes left in the game and it appears there is good chance she will miss the Shockers final 2 regular season games.
If SMU and ECU do not reschedule their game that was postponed on February 1st, and it looks like that probobly will not be rescheduled, the the Shockers are locked in to a bottom 6 finish and will be among the 6 to have the privilege of playing in the 1st round (essentially a play-in round) of the AAC Tournament that would require those teams to win 4 games in 4 days to win the AAC Tournament. That's not happening. The Shocks have not won back to back AAC games all-season.

SCOUTING THE OWLS
Led by first year head coach Diane Richardson, Temple enters Wednesday's matchup at 10-16 this season and 5-9 in American play. The Owls started conference play 5-4, but have lost five in a row. Temple is led by Aleah Nelson and Tiarra East. Nelson leads the team in scoring (15.6 points) and assists (109), while East adds 11.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 41 steals. Nelson is a two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Temple ranks at the top of the conference in free throw shooting at 73.1 percent. The Owls won the first matchup in Philadelphia, 72-59, as Wichita State turned in one of its' worst shooting performances of the season in the loss.
LAST MEETING
Temple led for essentially the entire game in the first meeting this season on Feb. 1 in Philadelphia. The Owls led by six after 10 minutes and ran away with a 72-59 win. Wichita State shot a season-low 27.8 percent, including 2-for-11 from beyond the arc. Temple shot 46.4 percent on the other end to go with 8 three-pointers. Trajata Colbert scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a losing effort. DJ McCarty and Shamaryah Duncan each added 10 points.
Certainly a winnable game for the Shocks. However, I am anticipating that DJ McCarty will not play based on how hobbled she was when she left the SMU game with 8 minutes to play. She was still be supported by 2 teammates and not putting any weight on her injured leg when they went through the post-game hand shake line and left the court.
As far as recognizing the seniors this tweet indicates it will be Trajata and Curtessia. However, Jane is not included. That would indicate that Jane may very well return next season, although in this day and age of the transfer portal that can't assumed to be a given.
