Hard to say on Maddie but I did think at the time she could have played at a higher level than D-2 ball. Maddie pitched for Thomas More Prep and if you remember at one time had gone 70 innings without giving up a hit in high school. I don't know if there was any interest because if I remember right, Maddie had fairly well decided she was going to stay home and go to college. She was a great high school player at her level and currently as a junior is one game away from 20 wins on the mound. She can also hit, leading Hays with 10 home runs atm. Now your question do I think? Not normally. But yes, I think she could have helped WSU out.

As for Katie, wasn't she a walkon her freshman year who proved out to be better than the scholarship pitchers at that time? And Katie benefited greatly from playing in a weak Wichita City League in high school.

Give these girls a break, the Shockers are getting better every day and we do need to see a good recruiting year. Wichita State needs to bring in top tier players to compete with the Big 12 which currently has nine teams ranked in the top 25 I believe, or is it top 45? of over 300 teams playing D-1 softball. Give her a couple recruiting classes and I believe HCKB will have them in the top 3 in the Valley.

URKiding: I don't think I've ever seen a gun reading on Syd over 60mph. Her thing is control, reading hitters, and ball placement. My opinion, she could start for WSU right now in the outfield. She doesn't play summer ball, just high school and occasionally with the local summer team since she decided to leave the Mustangs after her sophomore season. I think Bob Lutz is going through some "wishful thinking" in his article and I too would like to see her go on and play but I don't think that's going to happen. However, if I'm wrong, Grandpa Eck will set me straight quickly.

Bob Lutz is quick to put down fan message boards, but I have a feeling someone at the Eagle cruises ShockerNet for input, ideas and for taking he temperature of Shocker nation. The recent articles on Shocker baseball (Gene) and Sydnee Eck just the most recent examples.

I would be doing the same thing if I were in there shoes.

Those comments are from the April 24th show:

HCKB comes on at about the 50 minute mark.

She mentioned the signing of pitcher Hunter Stohlmeyer out of Iowa.

They also have a LOI from Brittany Fortner out of the St. Louis area. She is a LH power hitter and the sister of Kayla Fortner who is a freshman at Evansville and currently 2nd in the league in hitting at 0.372 (0.459 OB% and 0.566 SLG%). Hopefully, she is as good as her sister.

They have signed Paige Mason out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park. Paige is a 3B and played for the KC Zephyrs Gold.

They have a verbal from a Butler pitcher who she could not name, but was expecting her LOI later that day. HCKB said she thought this would be the one that could help right away in the circle. (I assume the player @Hovpen was referring to in an earlier post).

There was another player from Butler who plans to walk on at WSU and could be helpful with her bat.

She said there would be quite a few changes over the next 6 months and that they would have quite a few new faces on next years roster.

If I had to guess I would speculate that the Butler pitcher is Mac Millspaugh and the walk on is her sister Alex. Both are freshmen at Butler this year so they would have 3 years of eligibility remaining at Wichita State.

I have absolutely no inside info on this. Just a guess.

Wishfull guess, but incorrect. No pitcher from Butler has committed to WSU.

I must have misunderstood HCKB's comments on the radio. I thought she said she had a verbal from a Butler pitcher and was expecting to get the LOI that afternoon. I'l have to listen to the replay again. Of course, maybe that was wishful hoping on HCKB's part.

I think the pitcher in question is from Iowa Lakes although I'm not at liberty to comment. U just have to be patient and give HCKB time to build and current injuries time to heal.

I listened to the podcast replay again and I did misunderstand what HCKB said. She said they had a juco pitcher that has verballed but did not mention what school she was from but she did say they were expecting a LOI later that day (April 24th). I don't know if that happened or not.

Just looking at Iowa Lakes record and roster (I didn't see any stats) I certainly don't seen anything pitching-wise to get excited about.

Try Iowa Central and Corinne Frei. Stats are here: WHIP of 0.92, 173K/48BB in 158 innings, opp BA of .171.

This could be wildly wrong of course, but at least sounds plausible if we are talking someone from an Iowa Juco.

Oh, and Iowa Central as the #1 seed in their Region lost their first game to the #8 seed, 7-2. Gonna be a long road to Nationals from there.

So, what position does the Fortner girl out of St. Louis play? Looking at what seems to be the recruits, two pitchers (freshman, juco), an infielder (St. Thomas), Butler walkon (first base?) Did I miss any that have been mentioned? So, five new faces? With three seniors leaving, and what, 3-4 who will be seniors next year, that is about right. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a couple more.

I have seen listed as an OF in a couple of places. Of course, positions often change between high school and college.

According to this article Frei signed a LOI to play for D-II William Jewel College in Liberty, MO.

I did find some stats for the Iowa Lakes pitching staff and as I suspected from looking at their game results there is really nothing their to get excited about.

Also Iowa Lakes plays in Division II softball for whatever that is worth.

The juco pitcher HCKB was talking about may not even be an Iowa or a Kansas juco. If it was an Iowa juco the following might be a prospect:

Rachel Brisker - Eastern Iowa CC - Division I

Brisker is intriguing with her 0.6 WHIP, 196K/30BB in 110 innings, an opponents BA somewhere around 0.100 and and ERA of 0.827

This could also be, and probably is, wildly wrong.

Brisker hasn’t made a choice on where she will continue to play softball after her time at MCC is through. She said she’ll make that decision within a week or two after her playing days with the Cardinals are over.

There is a difference in the amount of aid that can be offered between Division I (a full-ride, I think) and Divisions II and III (the details of which I won't take time to look up, sorry). Consequently, the competition will be some stronger, but I don't think the difference is as dramatic as it would be between NCAA Divisions I and II. I have the understanding that Butler CC, who plays Division I, does not offer full-rides, but plays at that level for recruiting purposes, selling the idea to recruits of better exposure for future NCAA D-I scholarships.
