  • Shocker SB at Oklahoma State Mizuno Classic

The Shockers travel to Stillwater for the Mizuno Classic this Friday and Saturday. This is the last weekend tournament for the Shocks. Games on Friday are versus Kansas City at 12 pm followed by Oklahoma State at 230 pm. Saturday's games are at 12 pm against KC and at 5 pm versus OSU.

Kansas City are members of the Summit League where they are tied as a pick for second. Kloe Hilbrenner and Mia Hoveland are on the Preseason Players to Watch list. Their record is 4-16, but they have played a schedule that is probably above their weight - five games against teams RV or better. In games of interest, they split with Missouri State and lost to Arkansas, SEMO, and Iowa. They also have an early loss to South Florida.

Hilbrenner leads the offense of the Roos with an OPS of 1.035 with Delainey Fenoglio next at .959. There are three pitchers whose innings are not that far apart: Hoveland with an ERA of 5.17 and a WHIP of 1.72, Camryn Stickel (5.20 and 1.67), and Casey Stout (5.21 and 1.25).

The 10/9 Cowgirls have a record of 17-6 with a record of 4-5 against teams RV or better. In the preseason, they were ranked in the top five of every poll you can find. They beat MIssouri State, lost to USF, and beat Minnesota twice in games against Shocker opponents.

The top OPS for OSU belong to Katelynn Carwile (1.056), Chyenne Factor (1.053 and six homers), and Julia Cottrill (1.109 and five homers). Almost all of the innings belong to Kelly Maxwell (1.15 and 0.96), Miranda Elish (Oregon to Texas to OSU) (2.76 and 1.34), and Morgan Day (Illinois State)(3.23 and 0.84). Elish and Day are grad students.

Sydney (1.545 and seven homers) and Addison (1.461 and twelve homers) continue to lead the Shocker offense with Lauren (1.217 and six homers) now in the third spot. The Shocker pitching has looked better of late, and the number are starting to look presentable. In innings order, Erin (4.11 and 1.44), Caitlin (4.06 and 1.54), and Alison (3.00 and 1.68).

That I know I can get. Will probably watch it on a replay.

I will be very interested to see how Coach B will line up her pitching in these 4 games. Not sure what message the coaches had for the pitching staff after the MIssouri State melt down but things have gone much better in the last 4 games as the Shocks have only allowed 6 runs in the last 4 games.

Bingham and McDonald were both very solid the last time out. Have to think they’ll each get a start against Oklahoma State.

That would be my guess. Plus the most experienced. Let Alison, Kenzie and Jordyn see what they can do against Kansas City.

              Game One

              Shockers v Kansas City

Standard lineup of late for the Shockers with Caitlin in the circle. Stickel is pitching for the Roos.

Does this mean Alison against Okie State in the game following?

The first pitch of the game is a double by Sydney and Addsion follows with walk. A groundout by Zoe advances the both. Neleigh's double only advances the runners one base, Sydney scoring. A ball almost caught? A single by Lauren scores Addison only, leaving runners at the corners. Krystin's single scores another run. 3-0 after one-half inning.

Two errors by Krystin on three chances in the bottom half, but no one scores. 3-0 after one complete.

Sydeny walks, Addison singles, and they both move up on a fly ball. No need. Neleigh follows with a three-run blast. 6-0 in the middle of the second. Oh, Lauren did double before the inning was over. A two-out double and a wild pitch get a KC runner to third, but no runs for them. 6-0.

Stout, in to start the third for the Roos, is promptly greeted with a single by Krystin and a double by Lainee. Wylie's single drives in one run, leaving runners at the corners. Sydney's infield single loads the bases with nobody out. Addison drive one home with her single, but the next three Shocks are outs. 8-0.

For Kansas City, an infield single, 5-4-3 DP, and then a homer. 8-1 after three complete.

With two outs, Lainee and Wylie single for the Shocks, putting runners at second and third after the throw. Syndey brings home one with a single, and Addison brings everybody home with a three-run homer. 12-1 with the Roos coming to bat in their half of the fourth. 1-2-3 for them. Still 12-1.

Neleigh singles, Lauren doubles her to third, and KC goes to a third pitcher. Jessica pinch-hits for Lolo and grounds out. Caroline Tallent (with only one previous plate appearance) hits for Krystin and singles in a run. Madyson pinch-hits for Lainee and grounds out. Wylie singles, scoring one run with another scoring on a throwing error on the play. 15-1 as Sydney comes to the plate. She singles, Addison singles, and another run is in. 16-1 as we go to the bottom of the fifth.

A strikeout to lead off the fifth for the Roos, the first strikeout of the day for Caitlin. Followed by another. Followed by a homer by Hilbrenner, their main stick. Followed by Caitlin's first walk of the day, on four pitches no less. Finally, a groundout to end the game.

              Shockers 16-2(5) Kansas City

Batting practice mostly for the Shocks it seemed. Four hits for Sydney and Addison, three hits for Neleigh, Lauren, and Wylie. Twenty-two hits altogether for the Shocks. Caitlin gave up the two homers among the four hits for the Roos, striking out two and walking one. Only 66 pitches for Caitlin; Kansas City swung early in the count a lot - part of their hitting philosophy, I assume.

Caitlyn Bingham starting in Game 1 vs Kansas City. Bailey Urban continues to be sidelined.

Very interesting that Bingham is starting this game. Have to think McDonald is starting against OSU today. Not sure what it all means for tomorrow.

Hard to say, but it is a lot different than baseball as these pitchers can pretty much go everyday. It will be interesting to see how long they go with Caitlyn in this game, especially of they get a decent lead. Could be they think Caitlyn will be better against OSU if she has some work under her belt first.

Save some of this hitting for the next one! What an onslaught. We’re going to need it against the Cowgirl pitchers.

The 22 hits was another school record, and that was in just 5 innings on a windy 40 degree day.

Apparently the wind was blowing in from left. Addie's home run was into the wind. Neleigh's home run was to right.

The 2 KC home runs were to center and right center (according to the live stat descriptions).

I think Caitlyn and Erin are prone to give up the occasional long ball. The key for them is to minimize the damage and Caitlyn, in this game, and Erin in the much more hotly contested Omaha game both did that as the 2 homers today and the 1 by Omaha in the last game were all solo homers.

                            Game Two

                            Shockers at Oklahoma State

The only lineup change is Jessica in at the DP spot. Both Zoe and Lolo were hitless against Kansas City. Erin is in the circle for the Shocks, and Elish for the Cowgirls. Elish can bring it. Also, she is hitting in the six-hole.

Ground out, ground out, line out in the Shocker first. At least no Ks. O-State loads the bases with no outs on a single, walk, and single. A passed ball scores one, and a ground out scores another. A single drives in the third run of the inning for the Cowgirls. After a walk reloads the bases, a 6-4-3 DP avoids any further scoring. 0-3 after one.

Big challenge for the Shocks. OSU isn't ranked 10th in the country for nothing.
