  • #25/RV Shocker SB at Razorback Invitational

The Shockers travel to Fayetteville this weekend for the Razorback Invitational. (Poor timing. One week later and we could have played in the Wooo Pig Classic. Oh, well.) In the Invitational proper (see second sentence following), the Shocks play Illinois at 10 am on Friday immediately followed by Longwood. Back-to-back games on Saturday are against Western Illinois and Arkansas beginning at 10 am. The Shockers also play the Razorbacks in a pre-Invitational game on Thursday at 5 pm.

#10/10 Arkansas are picked for third in the SEC. There are nine or eight teams, depending on who you ask, from the SEC currently ranked in the Top 25, the Razorbacks being third in that list. Infielder Danielle Gibson and pitcher Mary Haff are Preseason All-SEC picks. The Sooey Pigs opened their season in Puerto Vallarta. There they lost twice to #7 Washington, going 3-2 at the tournament. One of those wins was 4-3(8) over Memphis when the 'Backs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gibson has an OPS of 1.233., the only OPS to note. Haff (ERA of 4.05 and WHIP of 1.05) and Chenice Delce (3.09 and 1.46) have most of the innings.

Note: We remember Haff as a freshman, don't we. She could throw the ball through the side of a barn. Butters homered off her and the Shocks won, 1-0.

The Fighting Illini are members of the Big Ten, a conference that does not believe in any Pre-Season folderol. RV/RV Illinois played at LSU this past weekend, splitting with #14 LSU in games of note while going 4-1. The very early season offense leaders are Kelly Ryono (1.384) and Bella Loya (1.071). Lauren Wiles (0.82 and 1.18) and Sydney Sickels (1.56 and 1.56, not a typo) had most of the innings in Baton Rouge. Wiles, who had the most innings at 17 and struck out 20, was named Freshman of the Week for the Big Ten. She had the win over LSU.

Longwood are a member of the Big South Conference. The Lancers are picked third among the ten teams, most of whom you have never heard of. Sydney Backstrom, the reigning Pitcher of the Year, returns and is the Preseason pick for the same. They opened their season at the very difficult tournament hosted by UCF. They had a 1-4 mark, all of the losses against teams ranked RV or better. Emily Vinson (1.357) and Reagan Kanagawa (1.000) are the early leaders on offense. Backstrom and Kanagawa are the pitchers, but the tough competition gave them some ugly numbers. Vinson was the Co-Freshman of the Week in the Big South.

Western Illinois are a pick for seventh of the eight teams in the Summit League. The Leathernecks opened their season at the Depaul Tournament in the Rosemont Dome in Chicago where they were 2-4 against an array of (lower?) mid-majors. Kayla Zamora (.982) has the only OPS north of .700. Five different pitchers had a start at the Rosemont with Savannah Rodriguez and Abby Carlin garnering the most innings.

The Shockers are 4-1 after the visit to Texas. The top three OPS belong to Sydney (1.892, but will she play?), Addison (1.663), and Neleigh (1.567). Four pitchers had at least five innings last weekend. We might learn something about the pitching this weekend - or might not. It is not clear how much offense the Shocks will see.

That pre-invitational game on Thursday might be just a bit nippy. Looks like Fayetteville is expecting rain beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through about 10:00 am on Thursday.
And while temps will be around 50 degrees at that point by game time temps are expected to be around 30 and falling with winds out of the NNW at around 15 to 18 mph.

Ah, the joys of early season softball and baseball. or not, as whether or not they play might be in question.

Postponed as in "moved to Sunday" or as in "maybe we will play it Sunday, but we will decide later"?

Currently, the Razorbacks have one game with Illinois on Sunday.

        Thanks for the heads-up.

The Shocker website post says possibly "at a later date." That doesn't sound like Sunday.

                DOWN GOES ANOTHER SCHOOL RECORD
Sophomore (with 3 mores years of eligibility) Addison Barnard is making it a habit of putting her name in the record books. Barnard broke the single game school record for runs, scoring five at Sam Houston on Sunday, Feb. 13.

                STREAK SNAPPED
Junior (with 2 more years of eligibility) Sydney McKinney had her streak of 141 consecutive starts come to an end on the final day of the Bearkat Classic. McKinney was sidelined for the final game vs. Sam Houston.

Hopefully, Sydney will be back in the lineup soon. Looking forward to how the Shocks do against some very high quality competition in Arkansas and Illinois although not necessarily expecting wins in those games. Just hoping the Shocks are competitive. Winning would be a nice bonus.

Alison Cooper getting the start on the mound. Syd McKinney and Jessica Garcia are back, but not Arielle James.

                    Game One

                    Shockers v Illinois

Lineup: Sydney (yea!!), Addison, Neleigh, Lolo, Zoe, Bailey, Jessica, Camryn, Lauren with Alison!! in the circle. In a recent RH podcast by Sully, Neleigh and Madyson spoke well of her.

Illinois are RV in both polls.

Kelsie Packard, not one of the apparent top two pitchers for the Illini, is their starter. She pitched two innings last weekend. A graduate student, she was formerly at Valparaiso.

With the loss of the game against Arkansas to weather yesterday, the Shockers will be playing four games this weekend while each of the other four teams are playing five.

With two outs in the first, Neleigh and Lolo walk, but Zoe lines out. Illinois leads off with a single and stolen base and wild pitch. A sac fly scores the runner from third. A double and the Ilinii have another runner in scoring position. With two outs, there is a single back to Alison, but she throws out the runner at third. Rounding the bag? Delayed attempt to advance on the single? In any case, 1-0 Illinois after one.

1-2-3 in the Shocker second, two of them strike outs. 1-2-3 in the Illini second, one of them a strike out. Still 1-0.

In the third with one out, Sydney reaches on an infield single. Addison is called out on strikes (I would love to see that pitch location) as Sydney steals second. Neleigh walks on four pitches, and Lolo is hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sydney is then out at home, C to P. Scored as a caught stealing, so I assume the pitch did not get far enough away from the catcher to allow her to score. (Interesting ... to me at least. If she scores, it is a WP/PB. If not, it is a CS.)

A double and bunt single put Illini at the corners with nobody out. A groundout scores one run. Illinois, 2-0 after three. Nice pitching, I suppose, to allow only one run.

The Shocker fourth starts with a walk to Zoe and a double by Bailey. Jessica follows with a single to tie the game. Madyson pinch runs and is moved to second on a sac bunt by Camryn. After Lauren grounds out and advances Madyson, Illinois changes pitchers. Twice through the lineup and a pre-determined change? Sydney flies out. (The new pitcher also pitched just two innings last weekend.) 2-2 as we move to the bottom of the fourth.

Three groundouts in the Illini fourth. 2-2.

With one out, Neleigh homers to give the Shocks the lead. Lolo then walks on four pitches. Zoe reaches first on a force out, and Bailey follows with a two-run shot. 5-2 Shockers as we go to the bottom of the fifth.

Burbs goes yard and it's 5-2 Shocks top 5. Shocks playing long ball here in the 5th.

With two outs in the Illini fifth, they get a walk and a single, but a groundout ends the threat. 5-2 Shockers after five.

Tatum lines out as a pinch-hitter for Camryn to start the sixth. Lauren then homers! In limited action as a Shocker, that is her first extra-base hit. Pitching change for the Illini. This one pitched five innings last weekend. The top two innings-pitched have not appeared. Sydney greets the new arm with a single, and Addison follows with a homer. Now 8-2 as we go to the bottom half of the sixth.

Alison yields a two-out homer and then a single, but a fly out ends the inning. 8-3 Shocks after six.

In the seventh, Zoe leads off with a single and, one out later, Jessica also singles. They advance on a wild pitch, but two strikeouts follow.

That homer by AddieB was crushed. No doubter right off the bat.
