Probably, although that's of little concern, at least to me, at this point in the season. Last year the Shocks lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5-1 in the first weekend of the season.

I expect a better game against Sam Houston but this coming week will tell us much more about where this team is.

BTW, one of the teams we face next week Illinois moved to 4-1 on the season with a 5-2 win at #14 LSU this morning.

        Game Five

        Shockers at Sam Houston State

Lineup: Addison SS, Bailey, Neleigh, Lolo, Zoe, Camryn, Tatum RF, Lainee, Lauren CF with Caitlin in the circle. No Sydney. Injury? Discipline? Jessica not catching in this one is a bit unexpected. She was in the Twitter lineup for the first one, so perhaps this is an injury issue.

LiveStats finally woke up for me.

Addison walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Neleigh walked and stole second, Addison scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Zoe then doubled Neleigh home.

In the bottom of the first, a double, passed ball and error by Camryn scored one run for the Bearkats. Two walks load the bases and an infield single scored two more runs. A ground out ends the inning. 2-3 after one.

In the second, Lainee walked, advanced on a wild pitch and then a groundout. Addison walked with two outs and stole second. An infield single by Bailey scored one run and advanced Addison to third. Of course, Bailey stole second. Neleigh walked to load the bases, and Lolo walked to score another run. Already six walks by SHS, and, surprising no one, there is a pitching change. Zoe doubled to score two more runs. 6-3 as we head to the bottom half of the second.

For the Bearkats, a double and infield single with one out. A two-out double scores two runs. At this rate, it may be halftime of the Super Bowl before this is over. Another double and the game is tied. I expect to see Alison before long. Well, not yet. A strikeout ends the inning. 6-6 after two complete. Six hits, four of them doubles, given up by Caitlin in the two innings.

Wylie subs for Tatum and leads off the Shocker third with a double. Lainee's single moves her to third base. Third pitcher for the Bearkats. Lauren's ground out scores Wylie from third. Lainee stayed at first and then stole second? So says LiveStats - it's possible. Addie walked, and Bailey singled to load the bases. Only one out. Neleigh walked to score one run, and another run scored on Lolo's ground out. 9-6 in the middle of the third.

Wylie remains in the game in LF and Bailey moves to RF. Jordyn Pipkin on to pitch for the Shockers. This is the first career appearance for Jordyn, a redshirt freshman. A swinging strikeout! Nice start. Only a one-out walk given up, and we are on to the fourth. 9-6 Shockers.

1-2-3 in the Shocker fourth. 1-2-walk-3 for the Bearkats with two Ks in there. 9-6 after four.

An infield single for Lauren leads off the fifth, and Addison follows with a single of her own. A force out at third, but Neleigh singles to score Addison. Lolo's single loads the bases. Pitching change, the fourth pitcher of the game for SHS. It takes only two pitches to hit Zoe, scoring a run. Krystin Nelson pinch-hits for Camryn and walks, scoring another run. Now 12-6 and still only one out. Wylie's sac fly brings Lolo in from third. 13-6 Shockers as we go to the bottom of the fifth.

Krystin stays in to play 3B - and gets two ground outs to start inning. A ground out to 2B ends the inning. 13-6 after five.

A solo homer by Addison and a runs-ahead game is in view. Bailey follows with a jack of her own. The fifth pitcher of the game, their best one, is in for the Bearkats, and she gets the needed two outs. 15-6 - Jordyn has a run to spare.

Two singles lead off the sixth for the Bearkats. A groundout moves the runners up a base, and a walk loads the bases. A single scores two. Oh, well. A wild pitch scores another run before the third out. 15-9 after six.

Zoe doubles to start the seventh, and Krystin is safe on an error, Zoe moving up a base. Coin flip! Krystin is out stealing. Wylie singles to score Zoe. Lauren forces out Wylie, and Lauren flies out. Kickoff!! 16-9.

Jordyn is back out. Two pitches, two ground outs. An infield single follows before a strikeout to end the game. Finally. Officially, a 3 hour 10 minute game.

        Shockers 16-9 Sam Houston State

Bailey and Zoe each had three hits, all of Zoe's being doubles. Addison and Bailey had solo homers. Zoe had four RBI.

Caitlin was dreadful. Jordyn went five inninngs for the win, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks.

All five pitchers on the staff had time in the circle.

Bats woke up. Hopefully the first game today was an anomaly.

Quite an at bat for Addison in the 6th. Homering to left on the 10th pitch of the at bat.

Not sure we can read too much into this weekend. Big concern is what is the situation with Syd McKinney?

Not sure we found out a whole lot this weekend. Coming into the season the general consensus was that the offense will be okay but weren't quite sure how the pitching would hold up. I think that's prettty much where I remain regarding this team.

No coach's radio show tomorrow. Hopefully, someone in the know will give us a report on Sydney's situtation as well as that of Arielle.

The offense will be a step down at C and 3B. Bailey will continue to improve and help the OF offense some. Can the returnees make up the difference? I think the step is too big. But maybe okay is good enough. Like you, not sure about the pitching yet.

                    No Sydney. Injury? Discipline?

Syd would never be one that needs discipline. Very good kid, hard worker and a team player. She is harder on herself than anyone else could be. I am sure HCKB was just being cautious with a potential injury. This is a marathon and not a sprint.

What do you hear about Arielle?

I think it was pretty much a given that we would have a decline in production at the C position. If we can get Arielle back at 2B and Zoe back to 3B the decline in production at 3B may not be too bad, if any. Not sure about defensively though. Clearly how much offense is good enough depends on how the pitching and the defense goes.

                          Don’t know anything on her.

I should have explained myself better. 3B offense was assuming Camryn is there. Clearly, we have not seen Arielle enough to have even a good guess about her offense. The combination of defense and offense that Kaylee brought at 2B last year is going to be tough to beat though.

The new polls are not out until Tuesday morning, but in noodling around to find the best links for them, I discovered that HCKB is the AAC representative on the NFCA D-I Poll Committee!! This is the first year of a three-year term.

American Tabs Barnard Player of the Week

The first weekly honor of the 2022 season belongs to sophomore Addison Barnard who was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

Barnard picked up where she left off after a record-breaking freshman campaign in the Black & Yellow. The Beatrice, Neb., native hit .500 in five games, going 8-for-16 with three home runs, seven RBI, nine stolen bases and 11 runs scored. Barnard had nine stolen bases her entire freshman season, but swiped nine over the opening weekend.
