The Shockers open their 2018 season this Friday at the Plainsman Invite hosted by preseason #13 Auburn.
The Shocks play RV Marshall and Auburn back-to-back on Friday with a 1230pm scheduled start time for the Marshall game.
On Saturday, the games are against Auburn and Furman, again back-to-back with a 430pm scheduled start.
The Shockers close out their tournament with a game against Tennessee Tech at 1030am on Sunday.
The Thundering Herd of Marshall are T29 in the NFCA Coaches’s poll. Members of Conference USA, they are picked fifth of the twelve teams. Catcher Taylor McCord and infielder Elicia D’Orazio are members of the Preseason All-Conference Team. McCord was a Conference USA first team member last year and threw out sixteen base stealing attempts and picked off nine runners. Conversely, D’Orazio led the nation in stolen bases with 59. She was also a first team member of the All-Conference team last year.
Auburn is the pick for fifth among the thirteen teams (not Vanderbilt) playing softball in the SEC. Pitcher Kaylee Carlson and outfielder Alyssa Rivera are members of the Preseason All-Conference Team. Carlson was on the first team last year and is on the USA Softball Player of the Year watch list for the second consecutive year. Mickey Dean is in his first year as head coach of the Tigers, coming from James Madison, probably the best team you have never heard of.
Furman is a member of the Southern Conference where the Paladins are picked second of seven teams. Lindsey Bert is the preseason Pitcher of the Year, the second time in three years she has held that distinction, and was the Pitcher of the Year for the conference last year. Shortstop Brittany Houston was a first team all-conference member last year and is on the Preseason All-Conference Team this year.
Tennessee Tech is picked tenth of the twelve teams in the Ohio Valley Conference. The conference has not announced a Preseason All-Conference Team, and the Golden Eagles do not have any returning players that their web site cares to talk about.
The Shockers are a preseason pick for fifth of the eight teams playing softball in the AAC. Third baseman Mackenzie Wright is a returning first-teamer from the Valley, while shortstop Laurie Derrico and catcher Madison Perrigan were second team honorees.
With the Shockers graduating their pitching last year and much of their offense the past two years, it may take a month or so for them to figure out who they are. This weekend should be a good start to that end.
