A very nice win over the Bisons by the Shocks just got nicer.
The kid from St. Thomas Aquinas, Nusbaum, is a stud. 25-6-46 .416 against the #24 Wildcats. Feel free to transfer to WSU next year Carlyle. Holy Mackerel.

How in the world did we hold her to 10-13-31 -.197????

I watched Lipscomb last year in the NCAAs, and I thought they were the real deal then. I was not at all surprised to see us go to Nashville for this tournament - it fits perfectly with the "chance to build an RPI" scheduling approach that Lambo has.

Wondering the same thing. Sometime today, Lambo mentioned that Lipscomb tries to hit high hands a lot, tool the block. But he said if you are disciplined (and use good technique?), you can negate a lot of that approach. The commentator in her closing remarks spoke of the Bison not playing well against the Shockers earlier today, but your opponents has a lot to do with your not playing well. I assume we did that.

And we are still experimenting with significant lineup changes.

          • From the game report of the Lipscomb-Arizona match:

"a raucous crowd" which numbered 345. We may be a bit spoiled here.

From Coach Rosenthal, "I'm not sure if we were a bit tired this morning, but we had a lot of conversations about what we needed from one another." Does it sound like he expected to win against the Shockers? Well, he was playing at home and was ahead very late in two of the three sets.

            • From the pre-game (but I could have paid better attention):

Still continue to experiment with lineups. Some small, nagging injuries affect some of what they can do at the moment.

When Mike asked about the defense, Lambo said Emily and the defense is all the opposing coaches wanted to talk about. Better defense has been an emphasis in practices.

Belmont runs an unconventional offense that can confuse an opponent.

              • Set 1

Down three early, tied and down three again at 11-14 gets a timeout for the Shockers.

Too many errors for both teams.

A 17-19 score becomes 21-19, and Belmont takes a timeout. Belmont is hitting .000, while the Shocks are hitting .036. "An ugly first set" says Mike.

                Shockers 25-20 Belmont

Kills by Emma, Tabitha and Jenny end the set. Shockers outscored Belmont by 8-1 to close the set. The Shocks hit .121 for the set while hit .026.

                  • Set 2

Mike's score and that on LiveStats are several points different. LS stayed in the first set for the first few points of the second set, and then corrected themselves. Perhaps they did not correct correctly. Oh, Mike's notes that his score differs from the scoreboard, too.

At a Belmont timeout, Mike has 12-8 while LS has 12-5.

He is finally getting a stat sheet. It says 12-7 at the timeout. LS finally agrees. Whew!

The score runs out to 20-13, and Belmont takes their second timeout. Shocks are at .320 v .083 in this set.

                    Shockers 25-13 Belmont

                    A cleaner set for the Shocks: .345 v -.033.

                    • Set 3

The Shocks creep out to a 13-11 lead, their largest of the set, and Belmont takes a timeout. Belmont's largest lead of the set has also been two.

Belmont rallies to tie the set at 18. Lambo takes a timeout.

A kill by Abbie, a hitting error and a Shocker block lead to a Belmont timeout with the score 21-18.

23-19 becomes 23-22 after three Shocker errors, and Lambo takes his second timeout.

                      Shockers 25-23 Belmont

From 23-23, the Shocks get a kill from Abbie and win the match on a serve receive error.

For the match, the Shockers hit .180 v .045. They had nine blocks v five.

Post-game: Abbie in the middle requires another middle that can score and finding another right. Jenny is just not mentally ready to play the right - an ideal solution. Lambo noted that it has been a long time she has played. Abby Pugh was talked about, and Brooke Smith was another possibility in the middle. The Shocks need to find someone who is available (in the offense) to be another middle. Abbie's success in a new role works well in the gym, but not in matches yet. Lambo notes there have not been many "true" right-sides for the Shockers. (Darci and Sam were mentioned from the past.) He noted that they really did not learn much this weekend - solutions did not appear for the problems they knew they had.

                      • Arizona no doubt took a bit of frustration out on Middle Tennessee sweeping them 13,18,7 (75-38).

However, Middle Tennessee just came from being swept in 3 consecutive matches at Austin Peay's tournament by UMKC (75-49), Missouri (75-40) and UNI (75-41) so it may be mostly that MTSU is just not very good this year.

Not sure if Lipscomb had an All-Tournament team or not. If so I'm thinking the Shocks would be represented by Emily (no doubt) and Tabitha (perhaps) with Emily earning Most Outstanding Player. However, since it wasn't a true round robin tournament they may not have had an All-Tournament team.

Nothing new on the site this morning, so I suspect you are right.

The first Chris Lamb show is tonight.

                          • Emily was selected as the American Athletice Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

A bit surprisingly only the second Player of the Week honor of her career although it not the easiest thing for a setter to win these honors over and OH or MB.

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State volleyball student-athlete Emily Hiebert has been named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first week of the season.

Should be an interesting show. 6:30 - 7:00 on KNSS 1330 AM/98.7 FM

I'm sure Lambo is more than happy to come out of Nashville with 3 sweeps especially considering that the competition seemed pretty good and how much tinkering he was doing with his lineups.

It is a bit of a concern that the Shocks still have so many question marks on how they want to play this year and which players will make the best unit. Obviously, some of the things that had clicked pretty well in the Spring and in practice did not work as well as hoped under the gun in live competition. OTOH, what's new. Lambo will always be tinkering with something.
