  • Shockers at the LUV Invitational to Open the Season

The 2017-18 version of the Lady Shocker Volleyball teams with open their season next Saturday at the Lipscomb Univerity Volleyball Invitational taking on the host Lipscomb University Bisons out of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Lipscomb has been tabbed as the favorite to win its 4th consecutive ASUN conference title this year behind preseason POY pick 5-10 Jr OH Carlyle Nusbaum. Nusbaum, who is from Overland Park's St. Thomas Aquinas HS, was the ASUN POY and ASUN Tournament MVP last year.

Lipscomb went 22-8 last year losing in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament to K-State in Manhattan in straight sets, 26-28, 15-25, 24-26.

Last year Nusbaum led the Lipscomb with 471 kills in 109 sets for a 4.50 KPS average.

Lipscomb did graduate 3 seniors from last year's team. 5-9 Sr S Kayla-Ostrom lead the team in assist with 750 but 5-11 Fr S Morgan Elmore had 551 assists which indicates Lipscomb was probably running a 6-2 much, if not all, of last year. 6-2 Sr RSH Taylor Racich was 2nd on the team in kills at 2.79 KPS and 6-2 Sr MB Katie Bradley contributed 1.43 KPS and led the team in total blocks with 68.

Lipscomb will have the advantage of having an exhibition game against Tennessee and their season opener against East Tennessee State next Friday evening before taking on the Shocks on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

The exhibition match against Tennessee was played yesterday (Saturday, August 19th) and was a predetermined 5-set match won by Lipscomb 4-1. Scores were 25-21, 26-24, 25-22, 25-23 and 5-15 despite Tennessee outhitting Lipsomb .203 to .181 for the match. Lipscomb had 10 service aces to 2 for Tennessee but Tennesse had 17 blocks to 8 for Lipscomb. This is the 1st season the NCAA has allowed exhibition games for women's volleyball. My guess is the substitution limits were not enforced in this match.

Lipscomb was lead by 6-0 R-Sr RSH Chloe Rogers, another Kansas product out of Blue Valley HS, who had 15 kills with a .273 hitting %. Carlyle Nusbaum (see above) had 13 kills but only hit .081 but she did lead Lipscomb with 17 digs. 5-10 Jr. OH Lauren Anderson had 9 kills but only hit .086 while contributing 14 digs.

The aforementioned Morgan Elmore had 22 assists but 5-8 Jr S Marcella Emmanuelli had 31 assists which indicates Lipscomb is probably running the 6-2 attack again this year.

Here is the Tennessee Exhibition Box Score.

Lipscomb was 52nd in RPI last year. The Shocks were 35th.

I am expecting this to be a very challenging match for the Shocks. At this point I see no indication that this match will be available to view anywhere. Listening to Mike Kennedy make the call appears to be the sole option at this point.

After what will probably be a tough match against Lipscomb at 12.30 pm the Shocks will have to come right back to play East Tennesse State at 5:00 pm. However, ETSU will have played Lipscomb at 6:30 pm and then Arizona at 10:00 am preceding the WSU-Lipscomb match on Saturday.

ETSU won the SoCon last year with a 14-4 record and were 22-8 overall and #96 in the RPI rankings. However, they lost to 2nd place Samford in the SoCon Tournament and did not make the NCAA Tournament. ETSU is the preseason pick to repeat as SoCon champions this year.

ETSU is expected to be led by 5-10 Jr RS A.J. Lux and 5-10 Sr OH Rylee Milhorn.

ETSU looks like it ran a 6-2 offense last year as well. They lost two key pieces from last year. 6-0 RSH Briana Allmon who led the team in kills last year and one of their setters, 5-8 Krsiten Favre.

ETSU also played a 5-set exhibition match this year defeating Charlotte 3-2. Here is the boxscore.

Looks like ETSU ran a 6-2 offense in this exhibition match with returning 5-8 Jr S Alyssa Kvarta and 5-9 Fr S Lexie Libs sharing the setting duties. Lux and Milhorn did indeed lead the offensive attack for ETSU.

Not expecting this match to be as tough as Lipscomb but the Shocks can't afford to take a team like ETSU for granted.

On Sunday at 2:30 pm the Shocks will finish up in Nashville with a match against Belmont, the preseason favorite to win the OVC. Note that last year the OVC was ranked 26th in RPI out of 32 conferencs. Belmont who finished 10-7 in the OVC and 16-12 overall finished #175 in the RPI rankings.

Here is the press release on the OVC race predictions. Belmont is expected to lead by 3 seniors ( 2 of which are Kansans). 5-10 RS/MB Brie Lewis and 5-8 OH Arianna Person, both out of St. James Academy in Lenexa) along with 5-10 S Emma Price.

Belmont ran a 5-1 last year with Emma Price delivering 87.4% of the team's assists. I would expect the same this year.

Belmont plays a match Friday afternoon and then 2 matches back-to-back during the middle of the day on Saturday in the Charlotte Invitational before making the 400 mile trip to Nashville to take on the Shocks on Sunday afternoon. Advantage dedinitely to the Shockers I woudl think.

The LUV Invitational is a bit unusual in that the two highest ranked teams, Arizona and Wichita State will not face each other. ETSU playes Lipscomb, Arizona and WSU. Liipscomb plays ETSU, WSU and Arizona. However, instead of Arizona and Wichita State playing each other Middle Tennessee State will come from playing a 3-match home tournament to play Arizona and Belmont will come from their 3-match tournament in Charlotte to play WSU on Sunday.

Obviously, a lot of ties between the Arizona and Wichita State coaching staffs as Lambo and both of his assistants have ties to Arizona. Whether or not this is the reason for the somewhat odd scheduling I can't say for sure.

          From the Shocker Match Notes:

WSU ranked 12th in the nation in attendance last season (2,264 average) and had a season-high crowd of 3,122 Oct. 28 against UNI at Charles Koch Arena.

We need to do better than that Shocker fans to help make this AAC deal payoff.

Freshman setter Alayna Maslinski is from Nashville. Hopefully, Lambo will be able to work her into the 15-player travelling squad.

The Shockers are 5-0 all-time against the 2017 tourney field (but it has been a while):
          Lipscomb - 1-0
          East Tennessee State - 1-0
          Belmont - 3-0

Hopefully, we make that 8-0 after this weekend.

One thing in the LIpscomb Tournament Notes on Wichita State that I don't think is especially accurate.

They stated: "They (WSU) are a very well coached team and are known for their height.

Yes, the Shocks are very well coach. However, I am not sure the Shocks are especially known for their height. The Shockers will have a slight height advantage on Lipscomb but the Shocks don't have monster teams like Nebraska, Texas, Stanford and some of the Big 10 teams. The Shocks have decent height but that isn't thier calling card.

These tall teams usually just toss it high to the outside and let their big hitters blast away over the block. I think that what the Shocks are known for is a team that will throw all kinds of different looks and options at you in an attempt to confuse and misdirect you.

Three matches in the books for the AAC so far. Is it too late to go back to the Valley?

Excited for this. First Shocker volleyball game I'll be following EVER, basically. Hopefully we can come out with a win against what seems like a great opponent.
Brummett throws, STRUCK HIM OUT! THE SHOCKERS ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! AN UNBELIEVABLE STORY!
