There are no softies in this tournament. You are going to know you have been in some matches.
You have that right @flyingMoose. I stayed around and watched the first 2 sets of the Hawaii - South Dakota match and I was pretty impressed with South Dakota. They are well coached and they can play. I believe Set 1 was tied as late as 16-all before Hawaii started pulling away. I think USD lead at 19-18 in Set 2. I thought the were going to get Hawaii the way that set was going. No gimme's in this tournament.

I was happy with the Shocks sweep of MSU in a key Valley opener. I thought they played pretty well in Sets 1 and 2, but I thought the Shocks were very sloppy and unfocused in Set 3. Not sure how many of MSU's 23 points in Set 3 came on kills but I'd be willing to bet that the points off of Shocker errors were at least double the number of kills they had. If the Shocks play that sloppy against any of the other 3 teams in the tournament things will not go well.

Did anyone hear Lambo's post game comments on the Shocker match?

After watching Hawaii - South Dakota tonight I have two comments about Friday's matches:

      1. I would not be surprised at all if Creighton beats Hawaii.

      2. The Shocker - Coyote matches promises to be very entertaining and possibly much tougher than most Shocker fans are expecting.

Not sure but I thought I heard something like, "Aaar, the Shockaaars threw the Bares overboard in three, though the lasses almost lost thaaarrr sea legs in the third."

Well that at least explains why Lambo was wearing an eye-patch tonight.

Very impressed with South Dakota. #12, Junior OH Kendall Kritenbrink is a stud. They did a lot of things, hitting out of the back row, blocked well, certainly they weren't as good defensively as Hawai'i but that's a solid team that easily is a top half valley team, if not a top 3....or even better.

3125 tonight.....man I hope that's a precursor to what we'll see crowd wise the rest of the weekend.

As the second set started, I told the wife, "Let's leave at the first SD timeout." And Hawai'i called the first timeout of the second set. :)

Seemed to be more students (WSU) in attendance last evening. The crowd was pretty quiet but seemed engaged in the whole game. MoSt played it close but it always seemed like the Shocks had an answer for every run they made. Really liked the versatility of the offense last night as it seemed both sides were able to score and there was at least one BIG time spike from the middle which came in the second game. Hope to see a more raucous crowd the rest of the way. Go Shocks

The #ShockerNation student group was fantastic. I hope those guys show up EVERY match.

I thought the crowd was solid. Not the best, far from the worst. Just no reason not to attend the next 3 matches if you like WSU. I know I am beating a dead horse.

So tonight they play South Dakota at 7:30pm, correct?

Edit: nm, just found @RoyalShock:'s post of the times on page 1 of this thread.

Yes, great student support. I noticed that most, if not all, of the teams were present - MBB, baseball, track & field, etc. Great contingent.

Not to throw a wet blanket on comments about the student support, but you do realize there was a SASO Ice Cream Social after the WSU match that was honoring the SASO contributors. The students were there to thank the SASO sponsors. Loved it -- Got to talk with lots of the basketball guys. Cle was there. Told Green and Wiggins I expected lots and lots of three's this year (those that go in of course -- unmade attempts don't count). Cotton is a stud. Don't think many are going to push him off his mark. Talked with Baker -- he and Wessel were real busy having their pictures taken holding babies. Told Wessel I will be really happy to see him on the court as we missed him last year (Mr. Floor Burn himself). DJ was there but looked a little pale. Saw Lufile (how could you miss him) but he was on the other side of the room and couldn't catch up to him. Zach, Ria'n and J. Simon were there. If Shaw, Darius, Kadeem or Fred were there, I missed them. All in all a really good evening and meeting the basketball guys just makes me more excited for the coming year.

Forgot that all the athletes were that primarily for that purpose, but a good showing nevertheless. We weren't able to stick around for the ice cream - hope it was tasty.

Did the same ticket get you into both the MSU/WSU match and the UH/USD match, even though the MSU match wasn't technically part of the "tournament"?

Some folks on VolleyTalk were wondering if the other teams (UH, USD, CU) would be allowed to sit in the stands to watch the MSU/WSU match, or if such "in-person scouting" was forbidden, since it wasn't part of the tournament

Yes, 1 ticket got you entrance to both matches.

I have no idea about NCAA scouting rules, but I cannot imagine a rule that would prohibit you from scouting any match you wanted to, regardless of tournament status.

The Creighton girls certainly watched the Hawai'i USD match. Don't know if UH or USD watched WSU.
