  • Shockers at Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational (Missouri State)

The Shockers open their "2020" campaign in Springfield this weekend. They have matches versus South Dakota (2 pm on Friday), Oral Roberts (noon on Saturday), and Missouri State (2 pm on Sunday).

South Dakota is the defending regular-season champion in the Summit League. They return the Setter of the Year and the Freshman of the Year (Elizabeth Juhnke).

Oral Roberts, also from the Summit League, finished in a tie for sixth last year among the nine teams.

Missouri State is picked for fifth (48 pts) in the Valley with a big jump up to the fourth-place pick (71) but only one point down to the sixth-place pick.

Hmm. Not sure what is up with the link. When writing, the link appears to be to the goshocker write-up, but that is not what appears when I post.

The Shockers move the lead to 9-4 (four more in a row) and SD takes a timeout.

Steady as she goes. Now 15-8 at the "fifth set" mark.

Other Shockers who have seen the court: McKayla, Erin, Megan. Obviously running a 6-2 as expected.

Three in a row by South Dakota, and the Shockers take a timeout at 17-13.

Shortly thereafter, the Shocks return the favor with their own triple. Coyote timeout at 21-14.

Shea Luaria on to serve at the end of the set.

24-17 becomes 24-20, and the Shocks take their second timeout.

A kill by Megan closes out the set at 25-20.

Shocks hit .279 v .054. Six kills for Sophia and four by Nicole. Three kills for Brooke in the middle.

Far from a pushover South Dakota team that was 31-3 the last time it counted. And they have their all conference setter and as you said, their 2 best and most important players.

Nicole Anderson seems to be swinging well with 4 early kills. Also productive in the middle and on the right so far, which means we must be setting much much better now.

Clearly Lambo was excited about this team.

              Set Two

After a quick 5-1 Shocker lead, the play is back and forth. The Coyotes close to 9-8, but at 14-9, they take a timeout.

It is not clear that next weekend is canceled yet, but it is certainly in doubt.

[Let me move this down here.]

21-18 was as close as South Dakota got.

25-19 on a service ace by Mckayla.

Hitting is now .256 v .120. Sophia has nine kills on 20 swings, hitting. 400. Nicole has nine kills on 26 swings, hitting .308.

For the 'Yotes, Juhnke is 7-4-23 for .130.

                    Set Three

Only Shocker leads are at 1-0 and 11-10. South Dakota stretches their lead to 13-17, and the Shocks take a timeout. Sorry, Shocker scores always listed first - just my quirk.

14-18 becomes 19-19, and the Coyotes take a timeout. Three kills by Megan are part of that stretch.

Three straight for South Dakota and Lambo takes a timeout at 20-22.

23-24, now 25-24. Timeout for the 'Yotes.

26-24 on a kill by Sophia. A blocking error on SD which I think means she was in the net.

3-0! We knew Lambo liked his team, but this has to be considered a surprise.

For the match, .256 v .153. Nicole is 13-3-36 for .278. Sophia is 12-1-23 for .478. After a slow start, Megan is 8-2-21 for .286. Mariah had the start you might expect from a freshman - 3-5-18 for -.111. Service aces to errors are 1 to 8 - ugh!

Was this on the radio? Would have loved to hear the post-match.

Is Brylee dinged? One of the non-practicers earlier in the week because of illness? Hopefully, nothing worse.

Is Morgan a red-shirt candidate? Are there too many OHs to give her enough playing time to justify burning a year? Sina is now a DS when she was an OH last year. But "last year" was a long time ago, and my memory is not improving with age.

                              Just questions, no answers.
