  • BYU Nike Invitational

The Shocks are definitely moving up in weight class this weekend in Provo, Utah. They take on West Virginia on Friday at 4:00 pm, #1 ranked Stanford on Saturday at 11:00 and host #9 BYU at 8:00 pm on Saturday (all times CDT).

Clearly Friday's match with West Virginia will be the best opportunity to pick up a win this weekend. WVU opened the season at home last week going 2-1 with wins over Georgia Southern (3-1) and UConn (3-0) and a loss to Wright State (1-3).

Stanford's and BYU's rankings pretty much speak for themselves although it is quite early in the season. However, these are two perennial powers in volleyball.

Stanford picked up sweeps over American (14, 16, 19) and Howard (16, 22, 15) last week,

BYU opened the season with a pair of wins on the road over Duke (3-0 and 3-1).

A very challenging weekend to say the least and state the obvious.

Good luck. Your team could play very well and still go 1-2. (Creighton played their best game of last weekend against USC, by far, and still lost it.) But I’ll give you a fighting chance to pull a big upset. To come out of last weekend with wins over James Madison and VCU shows that the Shockers have every intention of defending their AAC title.

Last year's Shocker team yes. Not sure this year's rebuilding team is quite ready for the likes of Stanford and BYU. Hopefully, the Shocks will be able to take care of West Virginia this afternoon.

Lambo said that he won't be changing much this weekend because they simply did not have enough practice time avialable to install anything new. He said he has a lot of things on his list to work on when they can find the practice time to work on them.

All the teams in this tournament, including West Virginia, are more physical than the Shocks but WV has not been playing real clean. He said it could go either way today. Will just depend on who plays best.

He was able to watch the WVU match against BYU last night and said 10 teams will make a lot of teams look bad so you have to be careful about reading to much into the score.

Regan Stiawalt has been cleared to play and did practice Wednesday and while she looked better tthan Lambo expected she would he is not totally sure she is totally ready to get vertical enough to be able to terminate consistently. My view is there is no reason to get her reinjured especially against BYU and Stanford tomorrow. Let here heal up good.

                  Set One

12-11 becomes 13-15 and the Shocks take a TO.

Teams look pretty evenly matched. WVU on a mini-run takes a 15-13 lead and Lambo calls a time out.

Shocks cannot get a mini-run of their own and have to take their last TO at 19-23.

The Mountaineers take Set One, 25-22.

                        .237 v .406

                        Alex 5-1-11 for .364
                        Megan 2-0-5 for .400
                        Abby 3-0-5 for .600
                        Emma 2-0-3 for .667
                        Tabitha is negative.

Four service errors by WVU helped, but not enough.

I think Tabitha is a good player but not sure she quite has the ability to put this team on her back and carry them espeically when these other teams are no doubt layin in wait for her.. That said I think Lambo probably prefers a more balanced attack and looks like that is possible but may take a while to fully develop.

Now watch Tabitha go off over the remainder of this match.,
