Speaking with baseball scouts? He must be leaning toward Drake. Why would he need to talk to scouts if he's heading to WSU? He's probably getting their feedback on his situation if he only plays summer ball, etc. Gene's track record speaks for itself...no need to inquire with scouts.

But hopefully all of the scouts say the best route would be to play baseball here to increase his draft status.

I don't think it means anything other than he's doing his due diligence.

I think he's doing his due diligence for a Drake decision. I think that's where he wants to go. If the scouts tell him it will harm his draft chances...then he'll end up here.

You can't fault a kid for getting all the possible information before making a decision. I hope he has every question and/or concern about all the possible decisions covered before he pulls the trigger for either school.

I believe he will decide tonight or at the latest tomorrow. Today we spent a lot of time contacting pro baseball scouts about their opinions. Please don't think Johnny is trying to get any extra pub from all this and drag it out. That is not what he is about. The main reason I have continued to post on this board and the Drake board is because I have been getting quite a few PM's asking what was going on. As of last night he was not 100% sure on what he should do. He gets no advantage for deciding any early than he has to. I am ready for him to decide as well and ready to get my life back to normal with my wife and two very young sons. Johnny knows he redshirts this year in basketball no matter where he goes so he needs to do whatever he needs to do in order to get this decison right. School starts Monday or Tuesday depending on where he goes. I believe he already has his application sent in to Drake and WSU. Once his mind is made up for sure he can get all the additional paperwork completed in a day or two.

I'm sure this is stressful for all of you. Best of Luck. (I do hope Johnny picks WSU but he needs to do what is best for him. :D ) Kids grow up fast; take some time to enjoy them while they're young.

If he wants to play pro baseball I doubt that he could do any better than WSU. Gene Stephenson has reached a level that very few coaches even hope to get achieve. That 7th round could be a 1st round by the time he finishes his career here or at least net a him hefty signing bonus.

Yeah, I'm basically a basketball fan, not so much baseball. You hafta figure that he'll only play hoops for a year or two before he goes fulltime baseball, but that might be enough to get us a Valley championship.

The calls made to MLB scouts have nothing to do with which way he was or wasn't leaning. The scouts are going to tell us what we already know or think we know, but it's always nice to make sure. The questions I asked are the difficulty of playing two sports in college, draft possibilities with both choices, and a few other questions that were relevant to Johnny's situation. I have also contacted a few DI college baseball coaches that have no interest in this situation other than to help a young man make a solid decision based on facts. One of the coaches coached a two sport athlete (basketball and baseball) that went in the first round to the Yankees I believe two years ago. I just want to make every call and talk to anyone who may make the decision easier on Johnny. Once you put all these facts and opinions together things start to make sense and his decison will be made at that time. This is a unique situation that is kind of complicated. I will be shocked if he doesn't play four years of college basketball.

rc20, thanks for sharing and giving us this valuable insight into the process. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, Johnny clearly has his priorities in order and is surrounded by mature people who have his best interests at heart.

Can you speculate as to how Johnny's decision will be made public?

Obviously we're all anxiously waiting as we see the value for him coming here and how much he could bring to the basketball team next year. I admit that's my primary focus. I've always enjoyed baseball and try and follow the Shox, but basketball is my first love.

At least he's sure to have a bright future no matter which way he goes both on and off the athletic fields...

I'm just glad Drake doesn't have baseball. If they did then that would be two sports I would have to watch him play against WSU in. Since I've become quite thick skinned in basketball the last 2 years It won't bother me too much. Watching him drop bombs on the shockers for 3 game series every year would have been tough. ;-)

So i choose to see positives both ways. either Coy chooses WSU or Coy only plays one sport against WSU.
