Sounds to me like he may STILL be a project. RS last year, didn't play in the first regular season game this year, then played 12, 7, 4, 2, and 1 minutes in the next 5 games and hasn't played since 11/28. 5 games, 26 minutes, 5 points, and 4 rebounds. Something's just not right.

FWIW - here is another article on his leaving:

A teammate asked UNLV 7-foot center Beas Hamga to autograph a Rebels poster for a friend who is an ardent fan of the basketball squad. “Should I write, ‘Goodbye’?” Hamga replied. Playing only 26 total minutes in five games this season, Hamga had made up his mind to leave Las ...

Yep, that is evident from the one comment on that story.... "Beas and his handlers better get a grip on reality. He may play at Wichita but those other schools will recruit over him. Why not try the A-10 or MAC?"
I wouldn't take much stock in on-line comments... those usually come from 'clueless' nutjobs... see the Eagle.

Agreed, but "handlers" also regularly belong in the exact same "clueless nutjobs" grouping with the one difference being they are usually not skilled enough to be able to use a computer.

I think 3 7 footers is a little much to hope for. His video was not impressive, and he looks to be quite a project. Orukpe is better, IMO, but Hamga does look to have some weight on him.

Say we did get Hamga and Orukpe, would the coach then play Stutz at the 4 position?

Hamga came to Las Vegas as a well-traveled prep player in the summer of 2007. That fall, he went on the shelf when the NCAA questioned his academic transcripts.

College basketball’s governing body allowed Hamga to stay at UNLV, but it forced him to redshirt in 2007-08.

That started his eligibility clock, in which players get a five-season window to play four seasons.

When Hamga became eligible this season, new centers Darris Santee and Brice Massamba solidified themselves as the respective starter and reserve in the post for the Rebels.

Moreover, next season, Matt Shaw, who is redshirting this season after knee surgery, will be healthy and Findlay College Prep big man Carlos Lopez will be in the fold.
I suppose that answers the redshirt question, and may answer why he had limited minutes so far this season.
The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Just because a guy is tall, doesn't mean we really need him to play here. I have some reservations about this kid--too many red flags.

I’m not overly concerned… in Marshall I trust!
I don’t see him as a desperate recruiter… IMO, he hasn’t brought in any projects… well, projects that we’ve been accustomed to in the past. I’ll trust his judgment as long as he’s captaining the ship.

                        :good: :good:

I'm not convinced by what I've seen and read. 3 years use of a scholarship, for 2 years of eligibility, for a player who may be a project, is questionable.

The circumstances of his leaving UNLV are questionable.

UNLV fans aren't upset to see him leaving. They're "sort of" wishing him the best and glad to have the scholarship available. None have expressed any concern that I've seen about how he would have been valuable if he had stuck around a little longer.

There's more red flags than you'd see at a bull fight.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
