  • Whomever we get, we need someone who can make free throws. We've lost 3 or 4 games because of poor free throw shooting.

Part of HCGM's job is to fix problems like this. Either we picked the right guy and he'll get this problem fixed or we picked the wrong guy. Of course, there are many ways to "fix" this problem. The first is to improve everyone's free throw shooting. However there are ways to "mask" a player so his FT% is not that critical. Put in good free throwers at the end of a game. Put him on an opponent's key player who cannot afford to pick up fouls. I expect 2009-10 to be more enjoyable than 2008-9.

What if we hire Jackie Stiles to teach shooting (in general and free throws)?

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Jackie could probably show them all a few tricks. Free Throw shooting ultimately comes down to the individual practicing them. Taking time out of practice for free throw shooting is good, but they all need alot more time practicing them than the NCAA allows for practice time.

I'm pretty sure her "tricks" involved MAKING an incredible number of shots every day. I'm thinking it was 1000, but maybe it wasn't quite that high. It was more than 99.9% of players even attempt in a day, let alone make. I think her advice would be little more than to start working harder.

He's got a good head on his shoulders and you can't help but to like him. I'll be very disappointed if he goes somewhere else but will wish him nothing but the best and a lot of success as long as it doesn't come at our expense.

I do think we have A LOT to offer him in both sports. I don't follow baseball near as closely as basketball but I think what we have is really hard to beat. Then when you mix in the facilities at both.....
I agree that he would be wonderful. My point is that he will disappoint someone - WSU or Drake or UMKC or ... - and we will survive and improve no matter what. I want JC to pick WSU but it is his choice. Could he do better than Gene, Brent and JT? Probably not. Could he have a huge impact on Shocker basketball? Yes; imagine Garrett Stutz, Johnny Coy, Kenny Manigault, Toure' Murry, etc. playing together in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Add in EO and we might think about a Final Four.
lets take this one step at a time.... in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 i would be happy if we were valley champs. The final four is pretty unrealistic at this point in time.
This assumes the key players improve as one might expect (or hope). A team with two good seven-footers (GS & EO), a good 6-foot-4 point guard (KM), a good 6-foot-4 shooting guard (TM), a good 6-foot-7 SF (JC), an initially raw but talented 6-foot-7 PF (JH) and additional players (e.g. David Kyles may be a great player once he figures out the mental aspects of school and basketball, Aaron Ellis might improve, Clevin Hannah will always be an asset, Graham Hatch usually passes inside well but needs to find his shooting touch, J.T. Durley is improving and could be a good 4 in a year or two, etc.) has a shot at beating the BCS teams and making the Final Four. A lot of good luck helps too.

With Stiles, it would be leadership by example. She would shame them into working harder. Considering her physical condition and health issues, what guy would let her outperform him?

              • Focus people, this is about Mr. Coy, not about a superb women's b-ball player making free throws.

Your damn right in this thread. I hate when I see a new post has been made which gets my hopes high that some good news is coming our way only to be let down when I read about Jackie Stiles.

                      • Deja vu? Let's hope not. IIRC, the last KC area recruit to break KC's heart got away (and for that matter may have been overhyped).

                        • If Johnny does end up signing here, I think they should break out a reversible jersey at jocks & jills. One side basketball, one side baseball. 2 for 1 :yahoo:

Absolutely, and way to go, KC -- you da man.

This stuff drives me crazy, too, and it isn't just the dofo types who do it, either. A while back we saw a veteran poster who should know better (was it WuDr, of all people?) going off on some totally irrelevant rant about KU gear at a Shocker game, and whenever I see that kind of thing, I wonder: is it really that hard to click New Topic instead of Reply?

Seriously, guys -- as KC says, focus. And by the way, if someone has a complaint about this post, please put it in a new thread. This is the extent of my irrelevancy to the topic of John Coy.
