I remember Carr being on some people's 4th team. Other 1979 AA include Steve Stipanovich, Clark Kellogg, Quentin Dailey, Darren Daye, Terry Fair, Ricky Ross, Byron Scott, Dominique Wilkins, Derek Whittenberg, Dirk Minniefield among others.

I remember watching the McD's All-Star game with Dreiling against Ewing.

McDaniel wasn't a blue-chip recruit. Maybe in today's environment he would be. Randy Burns had exactly one D1 offer. Jason Perez still wouldn't be a blue-chipper.

Sometimes fans get too hung up on ratings.

Aargh, where did you see Ewing compete against Dreiling?

If I recall correctly, Ewing did not play in the McDonald's All-American game in Wichita. He was there in civilian clothes and did not play because of the fact that he had competed in other tournaments, which prevented him from actually playing in Wichita, due to some rule that limited the number of postseason all-star games that high school players could participate in.

At that game, I was sitting to the right of the tunnel when he walked in. He definitely was in civilian clothes, because I remember thinking to myself that he, the Parade magazine's #1 player of the year, appeared to be much smaller (weight wise) then what I had envisioned.

The story of why he could not play was written about in the Wichita Eagle. If someone had the time and inclination, they could go back and find the story.

As they say, "That is my story and I am sticking by it."

More importantly, that McDonald's All-American game really was fun to watch all of the talent. However, being a McDonald's All-American is way overblown.

How many times have we seen players who are not highly ranked out of high school go on to have a much better college and pro career than many of the "can't miss" players?

You could say the same thing about some college AA that don't do as well in the pros. Just because you're the best HS or College players doesn't mean you're going to have that same success at a different level where the game is different. Some people hit their ceiling earlier than others.

Good point, however it probably has a lot to do with their 'high profile' coach. I'll leave it at that.

I don't think anyone should be agonizing and pleading about Ellis. He is a kid that grew early, is coordinated, has some talent, has made it clear he wants out of Wichita to play ball.

He is at the point now that other players will start to catch up with him in height and in talent. Whether he continues to be a shining star remains to be seen. His Junior and Senior years in High School will be the 'proving ground' for the future.

Just because he hasn't wanted to play for the 2000-2007 version of the Shockers, doesn't mean that he won't want to play for the 2008-2013 Shockers.

                          • AC was headed to UNC to be a Tar Heel until Gene Smithson took the job at WSU.
Cliff came to WSU beacuse of AC when they played together in an allstar game.
Point is that thing can change and often do.

                            • We've long surmised that it's just going to take that one top 50 recruit to sign with us to open the floodgates for more. Be they friends or competition from AAU, or just guys who begin to see WSU as a possibility. The hardest one is going to be the first.

And if we've ever had anyone who could do it, we've got him now.

                              • Rival's #26 ranked player, Rashanti Harris has committed to Georgia State. Harris and Cousins prove high ranked recruits don't always go to "elite" schools.
