I don't think there is room for Keyser in the rotation as a freshman. It's not clear to me if he is a 1, 2, or 3, but he will be competing with established players: Frankamp, Shamet, Taylor, McDuffie. Unestablished players: Taylor, Allen, and Smith.

Established bigs are: Kelly, Morris, and Nurger. Although that's not a strong cast, Hamilton and Willis will likely fill it out to make the five man rotation with the possibility of McDuffie playing some 4.

Assuming the above, even if McDuffie bumps one of the bigs from the rotation, there is only 2 spots remaining for Smith, Allen, Taylor, and Keyser. Playing time will again be at a premium.

    • Taylor is still unestablished in my opinion. He needs a lot of work to be a PG, I wouldn't even play him at that position at this point, and he's too small (not just short) to be a 2.

Zach Brown in that established mix as well

          • I love getting under the radar guys. They have a special chip on their shoulder helping them play angry. FVV, Baker, Cotton were all under the radar when we signed them (FVV blew up before he graduated though).

Smith doesn't need to fill those illustrious hightops to contribute but I think both he and Willis are going to be good. Willis is definitely not under the radar, but juco guys can have some edge too.

One thing that gives me confidence other than their stats is that fall juco signings for HCGM have tended to work out really well whereas some of the last minute spring signees have had more trouble . I can't think of one from fall who didn't (except Griskenas due to injury), though I haven't tracked it closely enough to know for sure.

            • if taylor can get his shot to fall on the regular...then he will compliment Frankamp quite well..but if he cant shoot the rock then I could see him in the same shoes as Hendersen of last year

Yep. I listed Taylor as both established and unestablished. Replace Taylor with Brown in the first one.

                • Way to early on, I like Snith backing up Frankamp, Shamet at the 2, Brown at the 3, McDuffie at the 4, Willis at the 5. Lots of competition for the last 4 players in the rotation, but Kelly and at least one of Morris/Nurger will surely get lots of minutes.

                  • I think McDuffie is more likely to play the 2 in the future than the 4. Frankly, I think he is quick enough to guard other 2s.

Not kidding. And that is scary and exciting and scary exciting.

                    • I still think Taylor is being under-valued. As a freshman, he was thrown into a buzz saw against USC and Alabama. He will have "Shocker experience" and "FVV experience" over Smith to start next season and I'm not sure that if Ty was a second year juco, he wouldn't be doing as well stat wise as Smith. I believe Smith will have to take minutes away from Ty, not the other way around. Keyser may be in the same boat as Taylor this year, but may turn out more like McDuffie.

It will be interesting to see as the season goes along if Taylor has what it takes to gain minutes. At this point, I don't see Conner with high assist totals (Ty did have 6 with 0 TOs against Alabama) and Ty also probably has a higher motor. When we look at Ty's shooting, let's not forget that Conner is 2-11/1-7 to start poorly as well. Yes, Conner was feeling pressure because of his situation, but so was Ty being thrown into the fire with Fred's injury. Conner has experience on his side right now, Ty's is very limited.

Brown would also fit that 2 bill. Did he not play PG at Sunrise?

Conner was playing WITH Fred, while Ty was playing in place of Fred. To me that explains the assist difference quite a bit. Conner is only being asked to make sure the offense moves, not to be the man like Ty was. With that aspect, Conner is doing way better than Ty in making sure the offense is running.

                          • So will Hamilton, a another "sunriser" see the light of day this year ? Next year? It seems that for whatever reason, he is not an option at this point. I suspect it will take another year or so for him to really get going.

Brown needs to work on his handles to play the 2. His outside shot is ok but not great - he reminds me a lot of Cotton at this point in his career and has a 4 inch height advantage, he could be really special. IMO, McDuffie is currently better at both shooting and dribbling right now. Both these guys could theoretically play the 2-4 throughout their time at WSU.

Conner was playing opposite of both Fred and Ron. Shamet at the 2 was getting almost double the assists of Conner. That's not to say that one good assist game by Conner will lighten my thinking. It IS too early to make sure-fire statements and I made that caveat.

If you don't think playing WITH Fred doesn't have it's advantages over trying to fill his spot as a raw freshmen...well. No way Ty was trying to be the man. He was trying to do his best with what little he knows so far, but with what best skills he believes he has at the time. Yes, I agree that what was being ask of Conner is less than if there was no Fred. Ty backing up Fred may very well look a lot more like Conner. Did I mention Conner's experience as a 3rd year soph and NCAA tourney play? Right now, that is why Conner is running the offense better (and that probably will continue in the future).
