STM led by 20 at the half, Brewster made a furious comeback to get within 5, but STM made their FTs down the stretch to win by 5. CJ seems to be a leader on the team, based on his talking to/instructing his teammates, even while on the bench.

CJ is most definitely a defensive-minded player. He guarded STM’s best offensive player, Christian Vital, a 6’2” UNLV commit. CJ got caught helping out a little too much, leaving Vital open for some 3s, which he made. CJ is a very active defender who got some rebounds and a few steals, but I don’t remember any blocks. He and Vital had a running verbal battle moist of the 2nd half. I think Vital said/did something to one of CJ’s teammates and CJ took up the challenge. He’s got a mean death stare. CJ also had some things to say to the refs, and one stare almost got him a T. CJ fouled out late in the game.

Offensively, he’s more comfortable running the team than looking for his own shot. As a PG, he had many opportunities to take a 3, but I don’t remember him taking any. He also struggled trying to break defenders down with the dribble. His handle needs work, as he either lost the ball or ran into interference trying to get to the rim. STM has Omari Spellman, a very talented 6’10” 285 lb. Nova commit. He may be need to get to the rim more to be a scorer. Since it wasn’t an open court type of game, he didn’t have any chances to take the rim down. Stats are tough to find in these games, but I guess he had maybe 6 pts.

Hopefully, STM is so good it made it tough for CJ. I’ll check Brewster’s schedule to see when I might be able to watch CJ again.

P.S. CJ loved my Shocker baseball-type jersey saying, “I gotta get me one of those.”
Thanks for the break down! I am a little surprised that he ran the point as I figured him to be a bit more of a wing. Also surprised that he needs to shore up his handles. The highlights show him with the ball on a string. I guess that's why they call them highlights.

Thanks for the update. A true man of your words, @DRuff34: giving us the scoop on CJ.

      • Thanks, wufan and Kai. I was hoping for more, offensively, from CJ. As I said, part of it could be what STM did defensively. I know he scored 25 pts. in a game earlier this season, and I wonder how that happened, meaning was it a open court game where they got out and ran, or did he simply have more opportunities in that game. Let's hope he has better offensive games this season.

And while some are concerned that we won't ever see another Fred or Ron again, I'm looking forward to four years from now when they say the same thing about Keyser.

It's nice to know the coaches who did the talent evaluations on Fred and Ron are still here and continue to evaluate recruits for future successful seasons with national aspirations.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Dana Ford recruited Fred and Jans recruited (and evaluated) Ron. Ford is gone and Jans can't recruit in his current capacity. Just sayin'.

              • Well, Royal, Marshall keeps talking about Shamet as having the sort of potential LeFred and Ron did (he said it again on his postgame show today), so somebody around there can find and recruit big time players. Maybe it's happened again with Keyser -- we'll know more in about nine or ten months, if not sooner. Meanwhile, I like the early returns on CJ.

                • We did have the luxury of the entire staff knowing CJ very well, before he signed.

Yes, and he's probably evaluating and pointing out guys already.

Count me in on the dunks. Coach Marshall raved on about C.J. and his ability to be a defensive stopper. 3G went on to mention C.J. is improving on his Offensive skill set as well. We know that this Coach puts a solid defensive team on the court each Season and has a sharp eye at finding such players.

I meant to respond last week. Are you suggesting Chris won't be a WSU assistant again soon or that you don't believe he will return to our bench at all?
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

I think some smart coach will offer Coach Jans a mid majorish head coaching size salary offer and scoop him up as one of the best assistant coaches in the country.
