  • Men's Indoor Track Thread

Thought I'd just start a thread for the indoor season instead of each meet since there's not a whole lot of activity in this forum.

Shockers head to Nebraska this weekend for a scored meet with Nebraska, Kansas, Florida State, Illinois, and Minnesota. Should be a heck of a meet and will be interesting to see how they stack up against these Big 10, Big 12, and SEC schools in a scored meet!

Latest Youtube video on the Texas Tech meet is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo1t2...e=channel_page

Shocker men have some nice things happen at Nebraska against Nebraska, KU, Illinois, Minnesota, and Florida State ...

-Beau Morris slowly inching his way up the pole vault, went 16ft this week, Chris Dickman cleared 15-7. This is a tough event in the MVC, there are like 7-8 guys over 16ft already
-Freshman Matt Sittenauer runs 6.95 in the 60 dash, nice run for him
-Solid time for the long sprinters in the 200m, 400m and 600y races.
-Jake Stecklein with a 1:54 in the 800 looks to be improving as a sophomore
-Ian Lindstrom was 2nd in the triple jump (just under 49ft) and is having a good senior season so far
-Best race of the day was the men's 4x4. Illinois, who is ranked in the top-10 of the NCAA battled with Nebraska and our Shockers down to the wire. WSU took a brief lead on the anchor leg but couldn't hold on to win it, but still broke the WSU school record and hung right with the Illini and Huskers.

-Shockers didn't score real well as a team but there were some elite teams at this meet, 3 of the top 19 in the nation, and the Shockers seemed to hold their own scoring often.

I think only the Multi's are competing next week at Nebraska. Should be fun to see Dickman and those guys and how good their first multi event of the year goes!

LINCOLN, Neb. ? The Wichita State University track and field team collected two individual victories and broke the school record in the men's indoor 4x400-meter relay, at the adidas Classic in Lincoln, Neb., which featured a host of nationally-ranked teams.

I would love to see that 4 x 400 race. Shocks finished within 1 second of Illinois and Nebraska.

I didn't realize Shocks were so deep in 400 meter sprinters. Looks like they fiielded 5 teams with 4 finishing in the Top 10. (Am I reading that correctly). In addition, to the great performance by the WSU A Team, the WSU B Team finished 6th ahead of the Kansas A Team, just missing on adding a coupel of points.

'74, do you any better of an idea where you think our teams fit in the Valley after a couple of meets?

1972 Shocker, having 4 teams in the top 10 of the 4x4 was a little deceptive because many of the other teams didn't field teams past the A team but the Shockers are very deep in the 400. Their B team did beat Kansas' A team and last week ran 3:19. Hopefully the youtube video this week will have some footage of that 4x4 race.

WuDrWu, its hard to say. The MVC men's meet is probably 4 fairly even teams with UNI, SIU, Indiana St, and WSU. WSU has a couple holes but so do the other teams. I think SIU looks strong early as does IndSt. UNI usually doesn't compete everyone at the first few meets so its still hard to tell what they have. The meet at Iowa State in 2 weeks is basically a MVC preview. For the women I think we have a load of potential but will be relying on a lot of new faces like Brittany Hemphill, Tish Brown, Emily Ballock, Samantha Hallman, Audacia Moore (hopefully). All those girls can score big points and with Kellyn Johnson and the distance crew should be a force to be reckoned with. UNI doesn't look as strong as they have been but SIU, IndSt, and Missouri State look solid.

Here is a link to the MVC lists, click on "performance list" and it'll bring up all the stats.

Shockers will only have a few competing this weekend as the multi-eventers travel to Nebraska. Chris Dickman was an NCAA qualifier last year in the heptathlon and Justin Taylor is one of the top guys in the Valley.

This week's Youtube video is up, those guys are funny:

Big meet for the multi's at Nebraska with Chris Dickman posting an NCAA qualifying mark (around 5450 pts) and Justin Taylor just missing the NCAA mark with 5272. Great job for those guys going 2-4 in a stacked competition.

Shockers will split their squad this weekend with the runners going to the Iowa State Classic and the field event athletes going to the Air Force Academy Invitational. This weekend should show where the Shocker stand in the MVC as most of the conference schools will be at Iowa State. Go Shox!

Some great performances this past weekend for the Shockers ... 2 weeks until the MVC Indoor at UNI.

-4x4 team broke the school record again (3:12.04) with 2 different guys on it than last time.
-Jared Foley runs great double in the 200/400 (21.66, 48.19). Freshman Dylan Hartnett runs 48.52, nice run for a rookie.
-Jake Stecklein has big pr 1:51 in the 800.
-DMR team runs 9:54, very solid.
-Chris Allen improves his MVC leading hurdle time to 8.09.
-At Air Force the jumpers broke out, Josh Crawford took the MVC lead with a 49-9 triple jump while Ian Lindstrom went 23-10 in the Long Jump. Derrick Shepherd went 23-3 in the LJ as well.

You can watch full races on www.flotrack.com they have all the races from Iowa State.

Shocker distance guys will run Friday at Nebraska and the rest of the team will go to K-State Saturday for their final tune-up before next week's MVC Indoor Championships at UNI. I think most of the guys will run off events to rest for next week's meet.

Well this is the big one for the indoor season as the Shockers go to UNI for the MVC Indoor Championships. UNI looks tough to beat but WSU should be in a battle for a top 2-3 finish with UNI, SIU, and Indiana State. Good luck Shockers and bring back some hardware from Cedar Falls!

'74, I think the coaches vote on who they think will win on Wednesday or Thursday but do you have any desire to give us a breakdown on each event (I know that is asking a lot) at least from the standpoint of what you think the WSU athletes will do and/or what they need to do to finish well?

                              Example:

                              Womens 3000

Kellyn Johnson - Has the best Valley time of the season by 9 seconds. Could be ganged up on by talented Missouri State team. With nobody to protect her, Kellyn is going to have to go it alone and hope she can hang on. Kellyn must win if the Shocks intend to compete for the top spot.

Prediction: If she handles the pressure, MVC record. 1st-10points

                              Mens 4X400 Relay

Foley, Blanding, Thiesfeld, Dickman & Smith - Group has lowered the school record twice so far this season. 2nd best time in the conference. Often times relays determine close meets. I think our sprinters are making big strides and are sitting on a flyer. Must be 1 or 2 to compete for a top 3 spot.

Prediction: Homer pick. As I said, I think the sprinters are going to come up big this weekend. Regardless, a conference record is probably going to be needed to win...maybe better (3:12:90 2002 MSU). 1st-10 points
