Wow, North Texas has almost 35,000 students. I know West Texas used to be part of the MoVal. Was North Texas? I seem to recall playing North Texas in football. I think one of our last seasons, Kennedy called a game with them down there that was infested with bugs all over the field.
Shocky, some really good examples of stadiums. There is really no doubt that WSU can and should build a nice size (30,000) new state of the art football stadium and get on with re-establishing the football program.
Also, interesting to see Tulsa decrease their size from about 40k to 30K.
I like the leadership of North Texas. They have that "can do" spirit!Comment

Reducing the size of the TU's stadium was somewhat of a controversial decision. The administration looked at the average attendance over the history of Skelly Stadium to determine the size. They felt that 20,000 empty seats most Saturdays was not a good trade for being able to have one big sell out every few years against OU or OSU. I think they made a sound decision IMO.
TU also asked larger unnamed schools (I assume it was OU & OSU) if the reduction would prevent them from playing at Shelly Stadium in the future. They were told that as long as they (visiting team) could sell the standard allotment of tickets through their ticket office, they had no problem with the size reduction. I think the allotment is usually 2000 tickets, but I'm not not sure.
It appears that 30,000 seats is becoming the standard for most non-BCS schools when building. We have a stadium right now that would get us by for a couple of years until we can build. Some MAC schools don't even have stadiums that are as large as ours. I'm not sure the 30 million start up figure is as accurate as I thought, considering we have a stadium.Comment

My unsolicited advice: Start with a club team, go to non-scholarship NAIA or low level NCAA, then FCS non-schalarship (like Drake and Butler), then on up to real FCS scholarship status. It may take some time, but at the minimum WSU will have a team (even if the powers that be stall it at one level or another) and enjoy the fun it brings...not to mention the tailgating. FCS is not cheap, but the Wichita area has a lot more potential support than Carbondale. I think the worst plan is to try to jump right into FBS. Hope things eventually work out for you.Comment

Is there still a movement against the Saluki Way Project? I would think this would get some of the students that have concerns about the cost of the project to reconsider and support it. Also, I understand the Saluki Way was originally a 100 million dollar project and is now in the 80 million dollar range. Has it been reduced due to lower construction cost or fund raising issues?
I would say that WSU would start need to start at FCS football and see how that does. Funding would be the key factor for its success. I don't think raising fees or a tax would work in Wichita IMO. We have been hit hard by the recession and a tax increase or student fee hike may backfire and build resentment against the new program. If a donor or donors could front the cost in the first 5 years, that would be ideal.Comment

You can pull up individual MVC schools with this link to see how they fund their programs. Unfortunately, I don't know all of the variables that go into each bucket.
Example: SIU pays $8.9M out of student fees while WSU pays $2.9M
SIU has about 20,000 students in contrast to WSU's 14,806.

I just talked talked to an older lady today that is an avid WSU fan and she knows a ton about the inside workings of Shocker athletics. She told me that as of right now, there are lawyers working very diligently to resurrect the football program and they told her to, "Keep the faith, because one day soon, it will happen..." :yahoo:Comment
