The Shocks did not have a Distance Medley time coming in so I don't know what they were expecting but they battled Tulsa right to the finish line finishing 2nd place in 10:01.18 to Tulsa's 10:01.07. That's pretty close for a 10 minute race. And it adds a nice 8 points to the Shockers total.

Ben Johnson opens his Friday with a 8.34 in the 60H good for 898 points. Not his best. He has a PR of 8.10. Ben is still in 4th place with two events to go the PV and the 1,000m run.
Ben will probably finish around 5,500 which is 115 points shy of his PR.
The Shocks also occupy 5th (Kaden Griffin), 7th (Jake Horsch) and 8th (Davis Bahner).
Kaden pretty week in the PV so he might fall a little. Jake is a little better in the PV than Kaden, Not sure about Davis.
I may not be able to check in again until later this afternoon so Go Shocks.

I'm Baaaaaaack! What nobody filled in?
Oh well the bottom line is that the Shocker men made a decent showing in their initial AAC T&F Championship finishing in 3rd in the Indoor Championships with 103 points behind the favorite and winner Houston with 139 points and 2nd place Memphis with 107 points and ahead of UConn who scored 93.5 points.
The Shocks may have left a few points on the table here and there which maybe could have pushed them into 2nd place but not nearly enough to challenge Houston and their speed machine.
I didn't get to see any of the events today but the 1 event I would like to see would be the men's mile run won by Shocker Jr. Zack Penrod. The time wasn't anything special with Zack running a 4:11.90 but the 6th place finisher ran 4:12.71. So the top 6 guys were all squeezed into an 0.81 second window.
All in all though I have to say good job Shocks. And by the way Tulsa finished 6th with 65 point so the Shockers pick up 3 points in the Havoc in the Heartland series.

There are links to Day 1 and Day 2 videos on this link but those are actually to last year's AAC Indoor (2017) -- see the post below for links to this year's meet.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 25, 2018, 12:06 AM.

There is video available of Zack Penrod's win the mile run. In fact, video of the entire meet is available if you have 16.5 hours to kill.
Here is the 9 hours and 20 minutes of Friday's action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z2xWhEVkkc
Here is the 7 hours and 8 minute of Saturday's action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biyplWXFhG0
Zack's mile run if you are interested is located at the 2 hour and 35 minute mark of Saturday's action. A worthwhile 5 minute watch.

The Shockers open their outdoor season Friday at the Emporia State Spring Invite. 12 Shocker male athletes will be competing, mostly in the throwing events.
All of the men's athletes will be competing in at least one of the throwing events, excluding junior Ben Johnson. Senior All-American Damien Odle returns for the 2018 year after redshirting in 2017 due to a season long injury. Odle set a school record on May 6, 2016 winning the Shocker open with a mark of 73.36m/240-8 in the javelin, his last competition was in the summer of 2016 when he finished ninth at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a mark of 70.49m/231-3. Other top throwers in the javelin for the Shockers are junior Aaron True who won the 2017 MVC Championships with a mark of 69.88m/229-3, which is seventh best in Shocker history and John Hoplin who has a personal best 64.29m/210-11. Multi-event athletes Grant Downes, Ben Johnson and Colin Reichenberger will each compete in three events. Downes and Reichenberger will compete in the 400m, 110m hurdles and javelin, while Johnson will enter in the 400m, 110m hurdles and long jump. Jeff Ast and Isaiah Evans are each coming off of strong 2018 indoor seasons. Ast will be competing in the discus and javelin, while Evans will throw the discus and hammer. Aidan Camp, Tyler Patterson, Davon Spexarth and Taran Taylor are each competing in their first outdoor season as Shockers.
it will be interesting to see how Damien Odle, the WSU recordholder in the javelin, does after missing last year with an injury. Looks like Hunter Veith is taking a bit of a rest which is not a surpirse.
It's early in the spring season and Wichita State and UMKC are the only D-1 teams at this meet so we are primarily comparing the results against how the guys have performed in the past.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 15, 2018, 05:51 PM.

The Shockers are holding a Heptathlon (Women) and Decathlon (Men) competition on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Right now the weather looks to be pretty decent although that may largely depend on what he winds do on those days.
Not sure if Hunter Veith will particiapate in this or not but I think he would if we get a couple of calm days in the mid-60's to low-70's. If may want to try to duplicate his indoor season by putting up a big number in his 1st decathlon of the season that would qualify him for the NCAA National Championship (beginning June 6th in Eugene) and then using the rest of the season to refine his skills and conditioning in a way that will keep him as strong and fresh as possible come June.
Hunter finished 6th in last year's Decathlon in Eugene with a school record 7,866. Kentucky's Tim Duckworth who won the recent Indoor Heptathlon Championship has a PR of 7,973 and I assume he is probably the odds on favorite to win the Decathlon as well.
Hunter may well have to score in excess of 8,000 points in order to win a decathlon national championship although I would think a mark of 7,600 or better would be good enough to qualify for the NCAA which requires a Top 16 qualifying mark.
If Hunter matched his PR's in all 10 of the decathlon events he would score 8,046 points. Typically, you don't expect that to happen but if you can stay close to your PR's and set several new PR's he can get their.
Hunter's best events are 100m, LJ, HJ, and 110H. He is pretty solid in the 400m and the PV but has some room for improvement. His weakest events and arguably where he could make the most relative improvement in are the shot put, discus, javelin and 1,500m.
Best of luck to Hunter as he completes his career at Wichita State this spring. Hopefully, he stays strong and healthy.

The Shockers top 2 decathletes Hunter Veith and Ben Johnson will compete only in participate but only in selected events at the Wichtia State Heptathlon/Decathlon meet this week. Not sure what events those will be. Just looking at the entry list I would say this primarily a developmental event.
WICHITA, Kan. – The Shockers are set to host the Wichita State heptathlon and decathlon on Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22, at Cessna Stadium.

Shocks head to the Arkansas Spring Invitational this weekend. It does not appear that Hunter Veith is competing. Prior to the Heptathlon/Decathlon Meet at Wichtia State this ast Wednesday and Thursday goShockers.com reported that Hunter would participate in only selected events in that meet but best I can tell he did not compete this week.
I am assuming this is simply a matter of wanting to keep Hunter as fresh and healthy as possible for the Nationals in early June.and train hiem so with the hope of having him peak at that time. Obviously, he needs to put up a qualifying score sometime this season but the Shocks have a dozen meets on the schedule between now and then. Not sure how many have decathlons but he should have plenty of opportunities to get a qualifying score.

The Shocker men do well in the javelin at Arkansas have 5 of the 7 throws that are 190"+
1. Sr. Damien Odle 222-8
2. Fr. Taran Tayler 220-7
3. Sr. John Hoplin 207-5
6. Fr. Davon Spexarth 191-8
7. Fr. Jeff Ast 191-1
Looks like we have pretty solid group of spearchuckers this year.
Shocker Jr. Austin Corley wins the 400H with a solid early season clocking of 51.25. Sr. Isaac Poe was 3rd at 53.30.
Jared Belardo and Rayvon Allen went 2 - 3 in the triple jump although with jumps of 49-9.75 and 49-0.75 respectively.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 24, 2018, 08:51 PM.

Looks like Shokcer All-American Hunter Veith is well on his way to an NCAA qualifying mark in the Decatholon at the Texas Relays.
He leads the event at the end of day 1 with 4,398 points.
He finished 2nd in the 100m dash with a 10.72 second time just .06 seconds off of his PR and just .01 second the winner.
He won the long jump with a score leap of 25-6.25 equally his personal best scoring a whopping 1,005 points.
He finished 5th in the shot put at 13.47m/44-2.25 which was a new PR in the shot put by around 2.5 feet.
He then won the high jump with another PR at 6-10.75.
Hwe finished off Day 1 with his 3rd PR of the day with a 48.66 clocking in the 400m run.
He leads Scott Filip of Rice by 112 points heading into Day 2 on Thursday.
You know it's been a good day whe you set 3 PR's, tie a 4th and are just off your PR in a 5th event.
Hunter has a shot at hitting the 8,000 point mark but he will have to continue to perfourm well on Day 2.

Texas Relays Live Results
Hunter runs an okay 110 hurdles to open up day 2 clocking in at 14.77 but that is well off his PR of 14.40.
The discus is up next. Not one of Hunter's better events. His PR is 38.10/125'. Each athlete gets 3 attempts.
The live results for the Texas Relays are one of the best, if not the best, I have seen.
Hunter throws 37.47/122-11 on his first attempt. Always good to get a score on the books on that 1st throw.
No improvement for Hunter on his 2nd throw.
Hunter fouled on his 3rd attempt.
Good to get this event out of the way. Probably Hunter's weakest of the 10 decathlon events.
Hunter still has the lead but it has narrowed to 80 points over Scott Filip of Rice and 107 points over Solomon Simmons of Kennesaw State.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 29, 2018, 12:42 PM.
