At Drake on Thursday Jr. Nathan Wickoren finished 8th in the 3,000m steeplechase at 9:18.09. That is about 7 seconds off his career best and is 6th best in the AAC this season.

Sr. Gage Garcia ran the 5k in 14:45.72 but that is off of his best outdoor time of 14:38.46 that he ran a year ago. Yesterday's time puts him 9th on the AAC performance chart at this point.

Des Moines, Iowa – Winny Koskei ran the sixth fastest time in Shocker history finishing third overall in the women's 5000m seeded race.

The Shocker men set 9 new PR's at the Red Raider Shootout but thiese were mostly set by Freshman and Sophomores establishing marks early in their careers. Of the 9 PR's only 2 of them would be Top 10 makrs on the AAC performance charts.

The best perfourmance was a long jump PR of 25-2 by Shocker freshman Rayvon Allen that is 5th best in the AAC this year and the best mark by an AAC freshman this year.

Freshman Austin Gauzy's PR of 48.03 in the 400m race was the 9th best mark in the AAC this year and the 3rd best by a freshman.

Most concering is that Hunter Veith scratched from both the long jump and the 110m hurdles. Hopefully, nothing serious going on wiht him.

LUBBOCK, Texas – Wichita State's track and field student-athletes set 22 personal records Friday at the Red Raider Shootout.

Wichita State is hosting The Shocker Open this Friday, May 4th at Cessna Stadium At first glance there is not much here to really see. It appears to a glorified intra-squad meet iwth some athletes from D-II Oklahoma Christian (Edmund, OK) and from two NAIA schools, Central Christian (McPerhson) and some Okies from Muskogee (Bacone College) thrown in. There will also be some former Shocker athletes competing though the Shocer Track Club. Perhaps a warm-up meet for a few athletes wiith the AAC Outdoor Chanmpinships next weekend.

Still there might be some decent perfourmances. After in Track & Field you mostly competing against the clock or the tape and yoruself.

Field Events start at 1:30 and Running Events at 5:00. Here is the Schedule. The price is right as admission is free. A live video stream is also available.

The javelin might be interesting as the Shocker have the No.1 rated javelin group (top 4 as a group) in the naitonal squad rankings. I guess that says you are pretty deep in that event. The Shocks are also #1 in the decathlon and #5 in the long jump squad rankings but no decathlon in this meet and our Top long jumpers are not jumping on Friday.

This meet does not provide any information about how healthy Hunter Veith is. He scratched from from the long jump and the 110m hurdles at last weeks Texas Tech meet and he is not on any of the startlists for Friday. Hopefully, he is fine. I guess we find out next week.

WICHITA, Kan. -  The Shockers host the Shocker Open for the 2018 regular season finale Friday, May 4 at Cessna Stadium.

Some good news for Shocker Track & Field followed by some bad news:

On April 18th the Shockers welcomed Josh Cable from Rocherster HS in illinois to the Shocker track team as part of the Class of 2018. I think Josh was mostly a middle distance guy.

On Tuesday of this week Josh was seriously injured (burns and smoke inhalation) in a house fire at his home rural Rochester.

By Michael Newmanmike@dyestat.com Early on May 1, Rochester All-State runner Josh Cable was involved in a house fire in his home in rural Rochester. According to the Springfield Journal Register, “Rochester Fire Chief John Archer said witnesses reported the teen had been in the basement of the house and became disoriented by the smoke. The teen’s father was able to get him out of the house. The teen suffered some burns and smoke inhalation. He was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medi

Sounds like his recovery is going about as well as expected. They think most of his burns are 2nd degree with spots of 3rd. Hard to say whether the smoke inhalation has done any permanent damage to his lungs.

Since I am about the only one who posts on this thread I will go ahead and wish Josh a full and speedy recovery and hopes that this does not derail his track career, although that may not be all that important at this point, on behalf of the ShockerNet family.

RH: Sprinter Ngaiza Takes on Time and Wins

Sully writes a somewhat extended report on Senior Sprinter Erick (yes with a c and a k) Ngaiza a walk-on to the Track & Field team who provides more evidence that you can be a source of motivation and leadership for your teammates even if you are not one of the better athletes on the team.

I, for one, will be very proud to have Erick as a fellow WSU alum.

Thanks to Sully for another really good story. And congratulations to Erick for surviving 4 tough years while functioning pretty much incognito in his athletice career as a Shocker while at the smae time being an outstadning student.

There were a few highlights for the Shocker men Friday at the Shocker open.

RSo. Zach Penrod ran a PR of 3:45.41 in the 1500m run which slots him 2nd in the AAC.

Jr. Isaiah Evans set a new PR in the Hammer Throw at 191-4 which slots him at 4th in the AAC.

Fr. Taran Taylor's new PR of 221-3 in the javlein is #7 in the AAC this season.

So. Kole Konrade high jumped 6-8.75 for a new PR and is the 9th best jump in the AAC this season.

The Shocks will head to Cincinnati next weekend, May 11-13, for the AAC Championships.

With the AAC Outdoor Track and Field Chapionships coming up next Friday, Satruday and Sunday I thought I would see how the Shoker men might fare based on the AAC Performance Charts as they now stand. I assume that as he did in the Indoor Season Hunter Veith will not compete in the decathlon since he has a spot in the NCAA National Championship locked up with his 8,046 score he recorded at the Texas Relays in late March. As far as I know Hunter is healthy although I don't think he has participated in a any meet events since April 20th.

If you are not familiar withe the scoring the Top 8 finishers in each event score points receving from 1st thru 8th: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1

Here are the Shocker men who are currently ranked in the Top 10 on the AAC Performance Charts:

100m - So. Denvoir Griffin - 10th - 10.58 (Ran 10.76 in the Prelims and did not qualify for the finals)

Pole Vault - Sr. Hunter Veith - 8th - 16-0.75 (Result: No Heighted - No Points)

              Long Jump - Sr. Hunter Veith - 2nd - 25-6.25 (Result: 25-0 - 5th Place - 4 Points)
              Long Jump - Jr. Jared Belardo - 4th - 25-4.5 (Result: 25-9.25 - 2nd Place - 8 Points)
              Long Jump - Fr. Rayon Allen - 5th - 25-2 (Result: 25-3.5 - 4th Place - 5 Points)

              Triple Jump - Fr. Rayvon Allen - 1st - 51-3.75 (Result: 49-4.5 - 5th - 4 Points)
              Triple Jump - Jr. Jared Belardo - 2nd - 51-3 (Result: 51-6.5 - 2nd - 8 Points)
Triple Jump - Sr. Hunter Veith - No mark this season and he probably does not work on this event much since it is not part of the decathlon. He was triple jumper in high school. He took 3rd in the Valley Championships last year with a jump of 49-5 which would be 6th best in the AAC this year. (Hunter could not compete due to injury).

              Shot Put - None

              Discus - Jr. Isaiah Evans - 15th - 155-6 (Result: 160-2 - 9th Place - 0 Points)

              Hammer - Jr. Isaiah Evans - 4th - 191-4 (Result: 185-7 - 4th Place - 5 Points)

              Javelin - Jr. Aaron True - 1st - 236-5 (Result: 254-2 - 1st Place - 10 Points)
              Javelin - Sr. Damien Odle - 6th - 222-8 (Result: 217-2 - 7th Place - 2 Points)
              Javelin - Fr. Taran Taylor - 7th - 221-3 (Result: 243-7 - 2nd Place - 8 Points)
              Javelin - Sr. John Hoplin - 8th - 209-2 (Result: 226-0 - 5th Place - 4 Points)

Decathlon - Sr. Hunter Veith - 1st - 8,046 (Not expected to compete - and did not)
              Decathlon - Fr. Jake Horsch - 3rd - 7,009 (Result: 7,080 Points - 3rd Place - 6 Poiints)
              Decathlon - Jr. Ben Johnson - 4th - 6,946 (Result: 7,272 Points - 2nd Place - 8 Poiints)
              Decathlon - Jr. Kaden Griffin - 5th - 6,851 (Result: 6,628 Points - 8th Place - 1 Poiint)
              Decathlon - So. Colin Reichenberger - 8th - 6,422 (Result: 6,646 Points - 7th Place - 2 Points)

By my calculations a finish equal to the current performance charts woudl produce about 130 points for the Shocker men. In last year's AAC Championships that would be good for a 3rd place finish.

Of course, points aren't awarded for your best peformance during the season but the actual results next weekend.

The Shocker men or the Shocker women need to outscore Tulsa to win the inaugural Havoc in the Heartlnad Trophy. With the women going through a major rebuidling of their team that will most likely have to be the Shocker men. Tulsa charts out at about 70 points. So if the Shocker mean are healthy and ready to go they should be able to get this done.

As anticipated four-time All-American Hunter Veith will not compete in the deccathlon as he has a spot in that event in the National Championships locked up and he can score more team points by focusing on individual events than he can from the decathlon. Veith is entered to compete in 5 events: the 110m hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault and triple jump.

As noted in my previous post the triple jump is not a decathlon event but Hunter is still pretty solid in that event although I doubt he spends a lot of time on it. It's been about 3 weeks since Hunter has competed in a meet. Looking forward to seeing how he performs. After this meet he will have another 3.5 weeks before heading to Eugene for the NCAA Championships.

Live coverage will be aired on the American Digital Network via Facebook Live. Friday, May 11 begins at 11:30 a.m. CT, Saturday, May 12 at 9:30 a.m. CT and Sunday's coverage begins at 9 a.m. CT.

In the decathlon there are 12 entries but only 5 schools represented. As mentioned Hunter Vieth, ranked #1 in the AAC and #2 nationally will skip the deccathlon and participate in 5 individual events. Houston's Nathaniel Mechler who won the indoor heptathlon is ranked #2 in the AAC and #8 nationally and looks like he is also skipping the decathlon. He will be participating in the 110m hurldes and the long jump.

6 of the 12 entrants are Shockers, Cincy has 2, UConn has 2, Houston has 1 and South Florida 1.

With Vieth and Mechler skipping the decathlon the Shockers are positioned pretty well for Jr. Ben Johnson, Fr. Jake Horsch and Jr. Kaden Griffin to pick up some points. Anything we would get from So. Colin Reichenberger, Fr. Grant Downes and Fr. Lucas Schaffer would be gravy.

                  • The only points to be scored on Friday are the Hammer Throw and the 10k run. Shocker men hoping for 4 to 6 points in those events.

Isiah Evans did his job in hammer throw with a toss of 185-7 to finish 4th and pick up 5 points for the Shocks.

Hopefully Pedro Montoya or Gage Garcia can pick up a point or two in the 10k which is the final event of today schedule for 7:30 pm CT.

                    • Ben Johnson had a nice PR in the decathlon shot put with a heave of 46-5.25 whch was about 1.5 feet futher than his previous best.

After 3 events Ben is in 3rd, Kaden Griffin is in 5th, Jake Horsch is in 7th and Grant Downes is in 8th. The high jump and 400m still to go on Day 1.

                      Update:

Day 1 is in the books with the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m dash in the books.

Cincinnatie Sr. Alex Bloom has pulled away a bit form the field on the strenght of a big high jump of 6-11.75 and he leads at the end of day 1 with 4,119 points which is 200 points ahead of his closest pursuer.

For the Shocks Ben Johnson is 3rd with 3,763 points, Kaden Griffin is 4th with 3,747 points and Fr. Jake Horsch, after winning the 400m woth a mew PR of 48.05 which was a full 1.67 seconds faster then Kaden's 2nd best time of 49.72, moved up to 6th place with 3,716 points.

Horsch set personal best in the 100m (11.01) and 400m (48.05). Jake's 400m time set a decathlon 400m facility and AAC meet record.

Tomorrow's events include the 110m hurdles, the discuss, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500m run.

I think both Ben and Jake have a shot a breaking 7,000 points and Kaden might get close but would probably need several PR's to get there.

Ben is pretty solid in the 110h and he is okay in the discuss and pole vault but he is not strong in the final two events, the javelin and 1,500. He is very weak in the javelin which surpirse me a little bit.

Kaden is okay in the 110h, the javelin and the 1,500 but very weak in the discus and the pole vault.

Jake is very good at the running events but, as you might expect from a freshman, has a ways to go in the strenght and technique events. He is pretty good in the 110h and very good by decathlon standards in the 1,500 but he is only fair to middlin' in the discus, pole vault and javelin.

The Shocks are probably hoping for 13 to 15 points from these 3 guys in the decathlon.

                      Coach Rainbolt on his multi's:

"I am really proud of the multi groups," said head track and field director Steve Rainbolt. "All the men and Kendra Henry really had strong first days and good performances, this will be an exciting day two for our multi event crew. The 400m that Jake ran was a special competitive effort and I'm really happy for him, same for Ben in the shot put. I'm also really proud of how Kaden is fighting hard through some significant aches and pains in an effort to battle up into the score."

                      • Zack Penrod qualifies for the 800m finals as did Shocker teammate Stan Skwarlo. Zack qualifying is not much of a surpirse but Stan is. Stan was 20th on the pre-meet perfourmance charts and he ran a new PR of 1:53.07 and grabbed the 8th and final qualifying spot in this event. The finals could be a real mosh pit at the finish line. The 8 qualifying times were all within 1.3 seconds of each other.

Austin Corley (51.82) and Isaac Poe (51.64) are through to the finals in the 400m hurdles. Isaac's prelim time is a new PR I believe.

                        • Shocker Sr. Gage Garcia, striped knee socks and spectacles, picks up an unexpected 4th place finish in the 10k with a PR of 31:31.88 which was about 7:30 faster than his previous best.

                          Pedro Montoya, however, was disqualified.

Would have been nice if Pedro had not be DQ'd but all-in-all the Shock are probably happy with the 10 points out of the 2 events scored today.

                          • Shocker So. Colin Reichenberger wins the decathlon 110 hurdles in 14.81. Colin moves into 9th place but he will have to perform at his best to move into the scoring column.

Jr. Ben Johnson (2nd in 14.84) holds on to 3rd overall, Jr. Kaden Griffin (10th at 15.81) fell back one spot to 5th overall, and Fr. Jake Horsch (5th in 15.15) holds on to 6th place overall.

Hopefully, Kaden, who is battling some significant aches and pains per Coach Rainbolt, can hold on. The decathlon is tough enough when you are healthy.

Next up is the discus which is not a particularly strong event for this group of Shocker decathletes although I think it is just a tough event for decathletes in general.

                            • After Day 1 Shocker Jr. Ben Johnson was in 3rd and trailed Cincy's Alex Bohm, the Day leader in the decathlon, by 356 point. Ben made a valiat charge but fell 46 points shy of overtaking Bloom.

Bloom finished 1st with 7,318 points followed by Ben at 7,272 (I like those numbers). Ben finished 2nd in the 110H, 2nd in the discus, 1st in the pole vault, 4th in the javelin and 3rd in the 1,500m. Ben set a new outdoor PR in the pole vault at 15-5 (which ited his indoor best) and set a new PR by about 16' in the javelin.

Fr. Jake Horsch finished very strong winning both the javelin with a PR of 168-11 and winning the 1,500m run by 14 seconds at 4:22.49 to move up from 6th place at the end of Day 1 to finish in 3rd place with 7.080 points.

Both Ben and Jake set new PR's with their decathlon scores.

So. Colin Reichenberger finished 7th with 6,648 points and a hobbled Kaden Griffin finished 8th with 6,628 points to add a few ponts to the Shocker kitty.

Just for good measure Freshmen Grant Downs and Lucas Shaffer had 9th and 10th place covered.

Shocks pick up 17 points in the decathlon. That is a ton of effort to collect 17 points and kudos to all these guys and especially to Kaden for battling through his aches and pains for 2 days to help the Shokcer casue.
