    WuDrWu,

Just to clarify ... WR 98.48m, AR 91.29m (Greer), Hetzendorf has thrown 78m in his career. There was a big head wind at the Olympic Trials that hurt the javelin marks.

The WR holder Jan Zelezny (retired) was (and still is) far superior than any other javelin thrower in the world. Much like Michael Johnson's 19.3 in the 200m and then a bunch of guys at 19.6-19.9. Greer actually had the longest throw in the world last year. The Americans are getting better, several guys are over 80m this year, but Greer is the only one that can challenge the top throwers in the world.

I think a major reason we struggle in the javelin is because less than half the states have javelin in high school. Also javelin in the USA isn't a high profile event like it is in many European countries. In Norway javelin throwers are treated like rock stars but Breaux Greer is more well known as an American Gladiator than an elite javelin thrower.
