AAC Indoor Championships - Final Results

    Men’s Teams Scores
    1. South Florida – 156
    2. Charlotte – 105.5
    3. UTSA – 80
    4. Tulsa – 79
    5. Wichita State – 70
    6. Rice – 68
    7. Memphis – 36
    8, North Texas – 35.5
    9. East Carolina – 31

South Florida, as expected, pretty much dominated the team scoring. The Shocks were just a little over my 67 point projection for them although I had them finishing 4th. Tulane appears to have a men's track and filed team but apparently did not enter a team in the AAC Championships. Not sure what the deal is with that. Saving some money?

Heading into the final event of the meet, the 4x400 relay, Rice led the Shocks 67-64. The Shocks finished 3rd in the 4x400 to pick up 6 points while Rice finished 8th good for only 1 point as the Shockers moved from 6th place to 5th place.

All-Confernce Honors were earned by Adria Navajon and Hudson Bailey in the heptathlon, Brady Palen in the high jump, and Joakim Generoux, Jason Parrish, Bryan Haney, and Trace Spires teamed up in the 4x400 relay.

Shockers/Wichita getting a quick payoff for converting Clapp Park to a XC venue:

May not seem like any big deal but that is about 200 athletes (90 male + 110 female) plus team coaches and supports staff, and AAC officials and staff and some number of family and friends.

So it will provide some level of economic impact for Wchita.

FREE ADMISSION - COME AND GO AS YOU PLEASE

If you go to the Baseball game vs Rice Saturday should have time post-game to stop and catch some of the running events Saturday afternoon.

Weather looking pretty good for Saturday, especially for this time of the year.

Not a large field in this meet. In addition to the Shockers, K-State and Oklahoma State have sent a decent number of athletes. Not sure if they are their best guys and gals but nice to have some D-1 competition at a home meet. Cowley County CC looks to have a good contingent of athletes whit Colby CC sending a a smaller group. The field is round out by Shocker Track Club athletes and a number of unattached athletes.

Shocker athletes to keep an eye on:

                Friday Events - Women:
4:00pm - Hammer: Jr. Samantha Marx
6:30pm - Javelin: Jr. Samantha Marx

                8:45pm - 3000m Run: Jr. Zander Cobb

                Saturday Events - Men:
12:15pm (Est) - High Jump: Jr. Brady Palen
1:15pm (Est) - Long Jump: Harry Barthelemy and Josh Parrish
After LJ - Triple Jump: Sr. Harry Barthelemy (only one other jumper from K-State)
2:45pm - 110m Hurdles: Sr. Joseph Holthusen, Jr. Adria Navajon, Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached), Fr. Josh Parrish and Fr. Jason Parrish
3:15pm - 100m Dash: Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached) and Sr. Joseph Holthusen
3:45pm - 400m Hurdles: So. Bryan Haney, Fr. Bock Merz and Fr. Jason Parrish
4:05pm - 200m Dash: Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached), Sr. Jospeh Holthusen, and So. Trace Spires
4:30pm - 800m Run: Jr. Yared Kidane (Unattached)

Yared Kidane is an athlete I am not familiar with. He is from Sweden and competed at Iowa Central CC, a pretty solid juco track and filed program. According to his bio, Yared Placed 13th at the 2021 NJCAA DI Cross Country Championships as a freshman...Qualified to the 2022 NJCAA Indoor Championships in three events, finishing seventh in the 600 meters, eighth in the 1,000 meters and fourth in the distance medley relay...Competed in three events at the 2022 NJCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 26th in the 800 meters, second in the 1500 meters and eighth in the 4x800-meter relay...Finished 19th at the 2022 NJCAA Cross Country Championships...Placed third in the 600 meters and ninth in the 1,000 meters at the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

Yared did not compete for the Shockers this year in XC and I don't think he competed during the indoor track season either. Since he is competing unattached I assume he will be redshirting this outdoor season as well.

I noticed that Jaleel Montgomery is also competing unattached. I think that is because, as a Freshman his indoor season did not count against his eligibility, the the spring outdoor season did. By redshirting this outdoor season he can get his indoor and outdoor eligibility back in sync so that he can compete in both as a senior next year.

                  Shocker Spring Invitational Results:

                  Friday Events - Men:

6:30pm - Javelin: So. Blake McCormick
-- Blake, who has a PB of 198-5, open his sophomore season with a mark of 182-9. Obviously he should have more in his tank. Freshman Jordan Rider, out of Kansas City, opened his Shocker career with a solid chuck of 183-5. Both of those marks are probably good enough to score at the AAC Championships although hard to tell with the new conference structure. In any case, looks like Coach Hetzendorf has some decent raw material to mold.

8:15pm - 1500m Run: Jr. Adam Rzentkoski and Jr. Yared Kidane (Unattached) -- Yared actually won this race in a time of 3:50.15 while Adam finished 4th in 3:54.64. Something in the 3:45 area probably needed to score points in the AAC Championships. This may have been Adam's 1st time running the 1500 in a collegiate meet.

8:45pm - 3000m Run: Jr. Zander Cobb -- While the 3k is not run in Championships meets Zander did win this race with a big PB of 8:31.43 knocking off almost 30 seconds of his previous best mark. So. Erik Enriquez finished 2nd in 8:39.45.

                  Saturday Events - Men:

12:15pm (Est) - High Jump: Jr. Brady Palen
-- Brady with a solid start to his outdoor season clearing 7-1.5.

12:30pm (Est) - Pole Vault: Not expecting much form any of the Shockers vaulters but worth mentioning that So. Weston Hulse won the pole vault clearing 15-3. That's a so-so height but that is a new PB for Weston by 7". So good to see signs of improvement and growth for the youngster.

1:15pm (Est) - Long Jump: Sr. Harry Barthelemy and Fr. Josh Parrish -- Harry managed a jump of 23-1 well below his PB of 24-6.5. Josh jumped 24-0 on his first collegiate long jump attempt outdoors. His PB indoors this year was 23-8. Pretty solid for the freshman.

After LJ - Triple Jump: Sr. Harry Barthelemy (only one other jumper from K-State) -- Harry jumped 46-1 which is well off of his PB of 50-6. You probably need to be around 48.5' to score in the AAC Championships.

2:45pm - 110m Hurdles: Sr. Joseph Holthusen, Jr. Adria Navajon, Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached), Fr. Josh Parrish and Fr. Jason Parrish -- Josh won his first collegiate 110m hurlde race in a pretty solid time of 14.17 seconds, Joseph clocked in at 14.32 (his PB is 14.01), Jaleel came in at 14.48 and Jason at 15 flat.

3:15pm - 100m Dash: Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached) and Sr. Joseph Holthusen -- Jaleel clocked in at 10.52 and Joseph at 10.84

3:45pm - 400m Hurdles: So. Bryan Haney, Fr. Bock Merz and Fr. Jason Parrish -- Jason with a very solid time of 52.96 in his firs collegiate 400m hurlde race. Bryan clocked in at 54.14 and Brock was a scratch

4:05pm - 200m Dash: Jr. Jaleel Montgomery (Unattached), Sr. Jospeh Holthusen, and So. Trace Spires -- Jaleel ran a PB of 21.32, Trace came in at 22.20 and Joseph at 22.41. For Trace and Joseph this was more of a training run I think.

4:30pm - 800m Run: Jr. Yared Kidane (Unattached) -- Yared won the 800m race with a very solid time of 1:50.98 which is right on the cusp of a Shocker Top 10 all-time mark and would probably be a scoring mark in the AAC Championships. Looks like Yared will be a key piece to the puzzle the next couple of years.

Go Shockers - Palen Named AAC Field Athlete of the Week

Wichita State's Brady Palen was named the American Athletic Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

The senior (outdoor eligibility) from Beloit, Kan. recorded the ninth-best mark in the nation in the high jump at the Shocker Spring Invitational, jumping 2.17m/7'1.5".

Palen leads the conference by six centimeters after his first meet and will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in the Arkansas Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 6.

Shockers Host Combined Events, Head to Arkansas, Friends

                      https://goshockers.com/news/2024/4/2...s-friends.aspx

Wichita State Combined Events - Cessna Stadium - April 3rd and 4th

Adria Navajon and Luke Czarnecki will compete in the decathlon. The Shockers will compete against athletes from Colorado State and Cloud County CC.

Friends Spring Invitational - April 4th through April 6th

Arkansas Spring Invitational - April 6th

The majority of the team will then compete down the road at the Friends Spring Open, while three high jumpers will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Arkansas Spring Invitational.

Brady Palen will head to Arkansas for the men with the high jump scheduled for 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Not the greatest weather today in Doo-Dah. Thursday looking okay, Saturday is very windy and possibly stormy. Sunday looking better but sill a pretty breezy.

The weather in Fayetteville on Saturday looks pretty decent although pretty breezy.

Not exactly ideal for top level performances.

Wichita State Combined Events - Decathlon (7-Man Field)

                        Day 1 - Wednesday, April 3rd:

100m Dash: Adria Navajon wins the event with a mark of 10.58 seconds good for 956 points. The is quite a bit better than his previous PB but most likely is wind-aided and will not be recognized in the record books. Freshman Luke Czarnecki ran an 11.29 in what appears to be his fist time running this event in college.

Long Jump: Adria wins the long jump with a leap 24-2.25 good for 906 points. That exceed his previous PB outdoors of 23-5.5 but again I suspect it is a wind aided mark. Luke leapt 21-5.5 in his first collegiate long jump outdoors.

Shot Put: Perhaps Adria's weakest event. His put of 35-6 was a new PB by 1 inch but was only worth 535 points. The two Colorado State guys put the shot 46-8.25 (742 points) and 43-+0.5 (675 points. Luke's put was 34-6.5 (518 points).

After 3 events: 1. Adria Navajon 2.394, 2. Elijah Scott (CSU) 2,312. 3. Mauricio Vega (CSU) 2,217...7. Luke Czarnecki 2,022

Looks like Adria has withdrawn form the competition as he did not participate in either the high jump and the 400m dash to close out day 1. Let's hope this is mostly a precautionary measure but Adria seems to have been battling injury issues ever since last year's AAC Outdoor Championships.

High Jump: Luke won this event with a nice effort clearing 6-6.25 This may be Luke's best event.

400m Dash: Luke finished last in the remaining 6-man field with a time of 54.66

At the end of Day 1 Luke is in 4th place with 3,429 points (237 points off the leader).

Shocker freshman Luke Czarnecki finished his first decathlon at 6,250. Both Hunter Veith and Autin Bahner, the top 2 all-time Shocker decathletes topped out at around 7,000 points as freshmen. I don't think Luke is that caliber of an athlete but he might challenge for a spot at the bottom of the Shockers all-time Top 10 before he is done. Has a lot of work to do to get there.

Friends Spring Invitational - Performance Of Note

Shocker senior Creighton Camp won the men's whirligig, aka the hammer throw, with a new PB mark of 187-5 which is the 5th best mark in the AAC so far this season. Looks like the AAC newbies have brought some quality into the AAC in this event.

Parrish Jumps NCAA No. 5 Mark in Long Jump at Friends

Wichita State freshman Josh Parrish recorded the fifth-best mark in the NCAA, jumping 7.94m/26'0.5" to win the long jump at the Friends Spring Open on Friday evening.

Wichita State freshman Josh Parrish recorded the fifth-best mark in the NCAA, jumping 7.94m/26'0.5" to win the long jump at the Friends Spring Open on Friday evening.

The freshman from Olathe, Kan. only recorded one fair mark in six jumps, but one was enough to claim the American Athletic Conference lead, the fifth-farthest mark in the nation this season, the third-best mark in Shocker history and the Friends Spring Open long jump win. The jump puts him in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries.

That is a great jump for a freshman. Josh was really attacking it. Only the 3rd Shocker to break 26' and only 2" of the Shocker all-time record set 44 years ago.

Brady Palen cleared 7-2.5 in the high jump at the Arkansas Spring Invitational tying the Razorback's Kason O'Riley but Brady got the gold as he cleared that height on his 1st attempt and O'Riley cleared it on his 2nd attempt. Both guys gave it a go at 7-3.75 but were unable to successfully clear that height in 3 attempts each.

It's early, but so far this year Brady is the only AAC high jumper to have cleared 7'.
