Peter Weaver started out pretty hot, carding a birdie on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 12th & 14th holes with only a single bogey mixed in to take a 5UP lead over Michael Winslow after just 14 holes.

Michael has slowly battled back and after 3 birdies in the first 7 holes of the second 18 today, he has pulled even with Peter Winslow.

Winslow EVEN Weaver 11 to play

    3:00PM Update

Winslow 1 Down Weaver 6 to play

Peter Weaver defeats Michael Winslow 4 & 2

Men’s Golf Adds Kansas Transfer Sokolosky

Wichita State men's golf coach Judd Easterling announced the signing of former Kansas 5A Golf State Champion and University of Kansas transfer Zach Sokolosky to the team's 2023-24 roster on Wednesday afternoon.

Wichita State men's golf coach Judd Easterling announced the signing of former Kansas 5A Golf State Champion and University of Kansas transfer Zach Sokolosky to the team's 2023-24 roster on Wednesday afternoon.

"Zach is going to come in here and help us immediately," said Easterling. "Being a local kid, he's familiar with our golf courses and a lot of our current student-athletes. I'm super excited to have him here."

A Wichita native, Sokolosky etched his name into Andover High School's men's golf program record book during his senior season, where he set the school record for the lowest single round score at 64 and he set the school record for score average in a season at 72.

Sokolosky comes to Wichita State as a redshirt junior after playing four seasons at Kansas. As a Jayhawk, he competed in 16 events and 47 rounds.

The relatively rare lefty golfer. Looks like a pretty solid addition.

Wichita State Newcomer Zach Sokolosky Wins Kansas Amateur (Shocker Michael Winslow is Runner Up)

In a tournament that saw three Wichita State golfers advance to the quarterfinals, redshirt senior and Kansas transfer Zach Sokolosky took home the Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship trophy after defeating fellow Shocker, Michael Winslow, in the 36-hole final round on Sunday afternoon.

Five Shockers, Lucas Scheufler, Ty Adkins, Connor Geist, Michael Winslow, and the aforementioned Sokolosky advanced out of the qualifying rounds with Sokolosky being slated as the top-seed after shooting -14.

Head golf coach Judd Easterling said, "The (Kansas) Amateur is the biggest annual golf tournament in the state of Kansas. It was great to see all five of our guys who competed qualify for the match play portion and it was great to be able to go out and support them at Falcon Lakes."

In the 36-hole final, neither Shocker could gain a significant advantage throughout. Winslow and Sokolosky each possessed a two-stroke lead at different points, but that was all the separation one could manage on the other.

In the end, it was Sokolosky's birdie on hole 34 that would crown him as champion, as it gave him a one stroke lead late that he would maintain across the final two holes to become the 113th Kansas Amateur Match Play Champion.

Winslow wraps up the summer season with two runner-up finishes under his belt, as he also finished second in the Missouri Amateur back on June 26th.

Go Shockers - Salina Native Elmore Added As Men's Golf Assistant Coach

Wichita State head men's golf coach Judd Easterling announced the addition of Salina native Cole Elmore to the team's coaching staff as an assistant coach on Monday afternoon.

"I'm super excited to bring Cole on as an assistant coach for this program," Easterling said. "He's going to come in ready to go with a great ability to mesh with the guys and be a leader quickly."

Elmore comes to Wichita State after being a graduate assistant for one year at North Central College, an NCAA Division III school in Naperville, Illinois.

Elmore also played golf collegiately at Lewis University, an NCAA Division II program in Chicago, Illinois. During his time Lewis, Elmore was hoisted into an interim head coaching role while still competing as a player his senior year. He worked with the Lewis University athletic director to maintain the program throughout the 2021-22 season, gaining himself valuable coaching experience.

"Cole is a super organized young man with a great ability to pay attention to little details. His prior experience coaching will make him a great guy for the younger guys to lean on, learn from, and he'll be a great resource as a coach," Easterling said. "I'm really super excited to have him here as a part of our program."

Elmore is a native of Salina, Kansas, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 2018.

Go Shockers - Shocker Golf Heads to Florida for Season Opener

Wichita State men's golf is ready to hit the links for the first time in the 2023-24 season. The Shockers will gear up and head to Bowling Green, Florida and Streamsong Resort to compete in the Allstate Streamsong Invitational which plays out from September 11th-13th.

Head Coach Judd Easterling has been very impressed by the results of his team in qualifiers leading up to this tournament.

"Since I've been head coach here, this has been the best qualifier we've ever had," Easterling said. "The amount of rounds and players we had under par each round was very impressive."

The Shockers starting lineup features four returners and one newcomer in Kansas transfer Zach Sokolosky. The returning starters for the Shockers in this tournament are senior All-Conference selection Blake Lorenz, and juniors Michael Winslow, Lucas Scheufler, and Tate Herrenbruck.

"Michael Winslow had six rounds of qualifying without posting a score over 70. Blake Lorenz finished the last two rounds with scores of 65 and 63." Easterling said. "Everybody has been competing at a high level and understands the overall competitiveness of this team."

The Shockers are making their first ever appearance in the Allstate Streamsong Invitational and their first time playing at Streamsong Resort.

The field of 11 teams will play 18 holes each on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with play beginning at 8:30 AM Eastern (7:30 AM Central) each day with a shotgun start.
Two other AAC teams (FAU, North Texas) are in this one as well.

                Live Stats

That Shocks are in a 2-way tie for 3rd at 11 under par. North Texas is in 6th and FAU is in 8th at 5-under and 1-under respectfully.

Zach Sokolosky and Blake Lorenz leading the way with Shocks with a pair of 4-under 69's. Lucas Scheufler came in at 3-under 70 and Tate Herrenbruck was at even par 73.

Perhaps a good sign for the Shocks is that the throw away score came our of the #1 spot as Michael Winslow shot a 1-over 74.

The Shocks are 5 shots behind leader Lipscomb.

The Shocks followed up their 11-under team score of 281 in Round 1 with 4-under 288 in Round 2 that puts them in 5th place and 2 shots up on Florida Atlantic and 3 shots up on North Texas who both gain ground on the Shocks today. The Shocks trail leader Kennesaw State by 15 strokes.

Yesterday the Shocks top 4 shot 5-under on the front 9 and 6-under on the back 9. Starting on holes 1 thru 4 today, the Shocks top 4 scorers shot 3 over on the front 9 but rallied to 7 under on the back 9.

After having the throw away score in Round 1 at only 1-over, Michael Winslow led the Shocks in Round 2 with a 4-under 69. Lucas Schueffler carded a 1-under 72, Zach Sokolosky an even par 73 and Blake Lorenz a 1-over 74. Tate Herrenbruck had the throw away score at 4-over 77.

I would say the Shocks could finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th depending on how they play in tomorrow's final round.

What a weird turnabout. From worst score to best while his 4 teammates all had worse scores by a total of 15 strokes.

Blake Lorenz en fuego today, He has birdied 7 of his first 10 holes.

Update: My bad. I jinxed him. He carded a double-bogey 7 on his 11th hole.

Update: Our $1 and #2 guys, Michael Winslow and Blake Lorenz both card double-bogeys on the par 4, 3rd hole which they are playing late in their rounds. That's a big ouch with little time to recover with only 3 left in the round for each of the team members..

The Shockers really fell apart in the final half of today's final round after Blake Lorenz got off to an unbelievably hot start. The end up the day at even par finishing in a tie with Florida Atlantic for 6th place after being in position to challenge for 2nd, 3rd or 4th place midway through the round.

North Texas had the best score of the day at 13-under and will end up in 3rd place 10 strokes ahead of he Shockers after trailing the Shocks by 3 coming into this round.

I don't think any of the individual performance are worth mentioning after this late collapse. Kind of takes the luster off any individual highlights. Not sure I recall a Shocker team that steps up big in the final rounds of their tournaments. Not sure if it is a mental toughness issue or what but it is an issue Coach Easterling needs to address. Perhaps it is my fault with my earlier jinx post.

Seems like we have some players who are capable of decent scoring, but whether or not they can do it under pressure is not clear.

Men’s Golf Heads to Omaha for Big O Classic

Fast Facts – Big O Classic

                            Dates: Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 2-3, 2023
                            Host: University of Omaha
Location: Omaha, Nebraska (Indian Creek Golf Club)
                            Yardage: 7,627 Yards
                            Par: 72
Format: 54 Holes (36 first day, 18 second day)
                            Live Scoring: Golfstat
                            The Field: 12 teams
12 teams – Creighton, Omaha, Dodge City CC, Hutchinson CC, Indian Hills CC, Lindenwood, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, St. Thomas, Weber State, Western Illinois and Wichita State

The Shockers will trot out a lineup of Blake Lorenz, Michael Winslow, Lucas Scheufler, Aston Castillo, and Zach Sokolosky, with freshman Ty Adkins competing as an individual.

Not much of a field with definitely a northern half of the country flavor. I would think the Shocks would definitely have a good shot at winning this tournament but we will see. At the very least they need to bounce back from the late collapse down in Florida couple of weeks ago. I just hope they finish ahead of the 3 jucos in the field. Hutch has pretty decent golf I think.

Shocker junior Lucas Scheufler, playing in the #3 spot, stumbles out of the gate with a triple bogey on his first hole and a double bogey on his 3rd hole. That is a tough way to get your long day started.

Although, there the field is 12 teams, both Creighton and Omaha are each fielding a pair of teams.

Midway through Round 1 the Shockers and Creighton (B) are tied for the lead at 2-under.

Scheuefler added a second double bogey to go along with his opening hole triple bogey and is pretty much rendered himself to be a non-factor at 6-over par after 9 holes. That puts the pressure on all 4 of the remaining guys to perform.

For some reason the have recorded no scores yet for Zach Sokolosky so whether or not the Shocks are really 2-under is hard to tell. The other 2 payers in Zach's threesome from Creighton (A) and Weber State also do not have any scores recorded and it's not because they haven't teed off. There group teed off at 8:30.

Freshman Ty Adkins, playing individually is doing quite well at 1 -under after 10 holes but that doesn't impact the team score.
