Go Shockers - Junior College National Champion Ramirez Signs with Wichita State
Reigning NJCAA Division I Men's Golf National Champion Jose Miguel Ramirez signed on the dotted line with the Wichita State Men's Golf Team on National Signing Day.
Head Coach Judd Easterling is thrilled to add Ramirez to his 2024-25 roster.
"Jose is going to come in here ready to play and compete," said Easterling. "He's an overall just great human being and just a tried-and-true player and competitor. He's a 'dawg' who will be able to step in and play well for us immediately next year."
Ramirez, a native of Maturin, Venezuela, is expected to provide an immediate impact to next year's lineup. As mentioned, Ramirez won the individual 2023 NJCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas. He finished 12-under par to claim the title by two strokes. He also led Indian Hills Community College to the team title in the same tournament. The Warriors sprinted to the team title finishing 11 strokes ahead of second place.
In additional to his National Championship, Ramirez was an All-NJCAA First Team Selection in 2023 and was First Team All-Region XI.
So far this season, Ramirez has continued to impress, finishing in the top-25 in each of Indian Hills' five fall tournaments. His best finish this year is second place at the Folds of Honor Challenge back on September 11.
"We are just so excited to get Jose here. He's won some major events and we're looking forward to having him next year."
Ramirez is the son of Francis Cerrudo and Jose Gregorio Ramirez. He has two brothers, Jose Andres and Jose Guillermo. He is planning to major in sport administration at Wichita State.Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

Hopefully, Mr. Ramirez works out a little better than the NJCAA D-1 national champion we signed for the 2022-23 school year. J.T.Pittman was okay last year but only managed the 6th best stroke average on the Shocker team and did not return for his senior year this year. On the other hand, J.T.'s less heralded juco teammate, Aston Castillo, had the 4th best stroke average last year and had the best stroke average for the Shocks this fall while playing in 3 of the 4 fall tournaments.
As a freshman last year Jose posted nine rounds of 71 or below on the year while posting an average round score of 72.0 on his way to his national title. That's pretty solid.

It appears to me that Mitchell will be joining the team for the coming Spring semester although he hasn't been added to the roster yet.
To clarify. it looks like Mitchell was a member of the NJCAA national champion Indian Hills CC team but not a individual NJCAA medalist. His freshman teammate was the individual medalist at 12-under 276 at Sand Creek Station. Mitchell had the 5th best score of the 5-man Indian Hills team at 9-over 294. 2 of his 4 rounds were counted in the Indian Hills team score and 2 were the throw away scores. WSU golf presenting him as a National Champion might be more or less accurate, but could also be considered to be a bit of gaslighting.

The individual highlight of Mitchell's sophomore year and juco career appears to be leading his team to a win at the Prairie Dunes Collegiate where he took medalist honors with a 2-under score of 138 (64-74).
Mitchell's stroke average as a sophomore was 73.4 over 26 rounds. That would have been 3rd best on last years Shocker team and 4th best on the Shocker team this past fall season. So he does have the talent to be in the mix.Last edited by 1972Shocker; January 20, 2024, 01:33 PM.

Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate - Round 1
Round 1 result would seem to indicate a tough course, tough setup or tough weather conditions today. None of the participating teams were able to really able to go low today. VCU leads at 12-over followed by Lamar at 14-over. Those two teams have created some separation from the pack heading into Round 2 tomorrow.
The other 7 teams are all between 23 to 29 over par, with the Shocks in a tie for 5th at 25-over.
Wichita State, Northern Colorado and UT-Arlington, the 3 lowest seeds, teed off on No.10 with the other 6 teams starting on No. 1.
Michael Winslow had by far the best round for the Shocks at 2-over 74 which puts him a tie for 5th on the individual leaderboard. Blake Lorenz and Zach Sokolosky came in at 6-over 78. Unfortunately both Adam Castillo and Tate Herrenbruck came in at 11-over 83 with one of those scores thrown out. Tate had 2 quadruple bogies and a triple bogey all on par 4 holes. So he played the other 15 holes in even par. Ugh.
Lucas Scheufler competing as an individual carded a 9-over 81.
Tomorrow UT-Arlington, Northern Colorado and UAB, the bottom 3 teams after round 1 get the honors of starting on No. 10. Not sure that really makes much, if any, difference.

Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate - Round 2
The course was a little more forgiving today or maybe the guys are just getting it figured out. Probably a combination of the 2. Yesterday the 9 teams collectively carded team scores of 207 over par. Today the teams collectively recorded scores of 72 over par.
VCU was 1-under in round 2 has a 9-stroke lead at 11-over par over Lamar at +20. UTEP is at 23-over and the Shocks are in 4th at 32-over with a 7-over par effort in Round 2. UT-Rio Grande Valley and UT Arlington are nipping at the Shockers' heels at 33-over.
Blake Lorenz carded an even par 72, Michael Winslow shot a 1-over 73, Zach Sokolosky a 2-over 74, and Adam Castillo a 4-over 76. Tate Herrenbruck continued to struggling coming in at 12--over 84 on top of his 83 in round one. Fortunately, Tate's score did not count.
:Lucas Scheufler improved shot a 4-over 76 after an 81 in round 1.
On the individual leaderboard Michael is in a 6th place tie at 3-over and Blake is tie a 4-way tie for 11th at 6-over.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 7, 2024, 09:17 AM.

Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate - Round 3 (Final Round)
The field once again improved their collective scoring as they went from 207-over in round one, 72-over in round two and 56-over in round three. That's a little unusual. It seems like in many cases it is just the reverse of that at the trick up the course setup as the tournament progresses to make the later round more challenging. Could be that this course, being in southern Mexico was just different enough from what the players are used to that they improved as they played the course.
Anyway, VCU ran away with the team trophy shooting 6-;under in the final round to finish at 5-over par. Texas El Paso and Lamar tied for 2nd place at 24-over par and the Shockers shot a 6-over, one shot better than round 2, to finish in 4th at 38-over par. The Shocks did finish 10 strokes ahead of fellow AAC member UAB.
Michael Winslow and Blaek Lorenz bot shot 1-under par 71 in today's final round. Aston Castillo came in at 2-over 74 and Zach Sokolosky cared a 6-over 78. Tate Herrenbruck had the throw away score for the 3 consecutive day at 7-over par 78.
Lucas Scheffler, playing as an individual shot a 2-over 74 in his final round.
For the tournament the scores were:
Michael Winslow: 74-73-73 = 218 (2-over par) Good for a tie for 5th on the individual leaderboard.
Blake Lorenz: 78-72-71 = 221 (5-over par) Good for a 3-way tie for 9th on the individual leaderboard.
Zach Sokolosky: 78-74-78 = 230 (14-over par)
Aston Castillo: 83-76-74 = 233 (17-over par)
Tate Herrenbruck: 83-84-79 = 246 (30-over par) Better than only 3 other golfers in the field of 54.
Lucas Scheufler: 81-76-74 = 231 (15-over par)
KInd of a mixed bag for the Shockers. It was good to see them with a decent round to close out the tournament. They seemed to have problems with that in the fall.

Zach's front nine reminds me a little of a round I played in a city tournament years and years ago at Mac Park. All over the course.
Double, eagle, bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie, birdie, double, bogey. Made the turn 2 over without carding a single par.
