Joseph Holthusen and Jaleel Montgomery qualifed for Saturday's 60m hurdle finals clocking identical times of 8.13 in winning their qualifying heats today. That is a new PB for Jaleel.

In today's finals Jaleel and Joseph went 1-2 in the 60m hurldes with times of 8.04 and 8.09, respectively. Jameel with a new PB that moves him into 10th on the Shockers All-Time Top 10 displacing teammate Adria Navajon who has a PB of 8.06. BTW, Joseph's PB is 7.74 from 2 years ago. Whether he can get back to that level post-injury remains to be seen.

Brady Palen and Weston Lewis both cleared 6-9.75 in the high jump along with one other jumper. The winner cleared 7-0.25. Brady finished 2nd and Weston 4th on the basis of fewer misses.

Jr. Yuben Goncalves finished 7th in he long jump with a leap of 22-5. That was 15 inches shy of his indoor PB he set 2 years ago.

Jr. J.D. Prinsloo (49.02), Fr. Trace Spires (49.27), So. R.J. Hutchinson (49.31) and Sr. Toby Penner (50.24) went 2-3-4-5 in the 400 meters. Good marks but probably need to be under 49 seconds to score at the AAC Championships.

So. Ridge Estes with a nice showing in the shot put winning that event with a toss of 55-5 was 6.5 feet better than his previous best and would have finished 2nd in last year's AAC Championships. I doubt the thinner air at altitude helps a 16 lb shot all that much but who knows.

I thought that was probably the case. That was a pretty impressive increase in distance by Ridge from his previous personal best.

Shockers Set to Host Herm Wilson Invitational

The Wichita State track and field team will compete in its sole home indoor meet of the season Friday and Saturday at the Heskett Center. The Shockers are hosting 24 teams in the two-day competition. However, not exactly major league competition as the only D-1 athletes, other than Shockers, that are schedule to compete are 3 Oklahoma State women in the pentathlon. Otherwise, it appears to be mostly Jucos and NAIA schools plus a few Oklahoma D-II schools.

"Every track meet is, plus or minus, a glorified practice session," head coach Steve Rainbolt said. "This is dress rehearsal for the championship meet, and ultimately we are learning things that are going to help us in championship competition."

That said there are some pretty good juco athletes competing and this venue perhaps provides some recruiting and scouting benefits for Coach Rainbolt and staff.

The highlight for Shocker fans may actually be a couple of former Shockers, including on the men's side Adam Moore, who broke 4-minutes in the mile last week at Iowa State will be favored to win the 800m run this weekend. Otherwise, most of the Shocker distance runners will take the weekend off.

Other highlights for the Shocker men are:

In the men's high jump, Shockers hold five of the top-10 conference marks, and four of those athletes will compete this weekend. Weston Lewis and Brady Palen are tied for second in the AAC and 29^th in the NCAA with 2.10m/6'10.75" clearances and Hudson Bailey and Navajon are tied for sixth in the conference (2.01m/6'7").

Joseph Holthusen and Jaleel Montgomery will duke it out in the 60-meter hurdles for the third consecutive meet. Holthusen won the first matchup at the triangular in 8.03 but Montgomery edged him out at the Lindeman Invitational, running 8.04. Both rank in the top 10 of the American Athletic Conference, with Holthusen in fourth and Montgomery in seventh. Adria Navajon, who will not run the hurdles this weekend, ranks fifth with his Triangular time of 8.06.

Sophomore Ridge Estes will be the favorite in the shot put have setting a big new PB last week at the Air Force Academy. It will be interesting to see if he can repeat something close to that mark.

None of the Shocker's main multi-event guys will be participating in the heptathlon this weekend. In addition to the high jump, Adria Navajon will compete in the men's shot put which really is practice as that is probably his weakest event in the heptathlon so good to see him working on that event.

All eyes were on Destiny Masters in the pentathlon on Friday but the highlight for the Shocker men was probably sophomore Hudson Bailey making his debut in the triple jump, placing second with a leap of 14.08m/46'2.5". While a jump of 48 to 49 feet probably needed to score in the AAC Championships that is pretty good first time effort for Hudson.

Brady Palen and Weston Lewis both cleared 6-10.75 in the high jump which matches their season highs. Both were unable to clear 7-.025. The only AAC athlete with a better mark this year is Romaine Beckford of South Florida who has cleared 7-3.

Joseph Holthusen got the better of teammate Jameel Montgomery in the 60m hurdles this week running a season best 8 flat vs 8.36 for Jameel. Joseph has the 4th best time in the AAC this year.

Bryce Merriman won the 800m run with a new PB of 1:54.42 which would be 5th best in the AAC so far this season but with month to go before the AAC Championships a lot can change. Shocker alum Adam Moore did not finish.

3 Shockers ran in the 5,000m run at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln tonight and senior Clayton Duchatscheck finished 2nd with a time of 14:08.35 about 3 seconds behind the winner Chandler Gibbens of Kansas. However, in his first 5k of the indoor season Clayton's time improved his PB by 15 seconds and moves him into 2nd place all-time at WSU behind the 14:06.23 ran by Mornay Annandale in 1992. The two runners previsouly in 2nd and 3rd, Trey Harrison and Tjamt Van Neiuwenhuizer set their marks in 1989. These were some longstnding marks on the Shocker record book. Not bad for a D-II transfer.

Sophomore Trey Rios finished 5th in 14:28.42 which was also a new PB beating his previous best time by 6 seconds. That moves Trey up on the All-Time Shocker Top 10 list from #10 to #8,

Junior Jackson Caldwell finished10th in 14:41.51 which was about 4 seconds shy of his best time.

Clayton's and Trey's times probably are good enough to score points in the AAC Championships.

On day 2 of competition, Adrian Diaz-Lopez won the mile and was 0.02 seconds away from breaking Adam Moore's school record from a year ago. Diaz-Lopez clocked a 4:01.10.

At the University of South Dakota Alumni Meet on Saturday:

Joseph Holthusen is back. Broke the 8 second barrier with a 7.90 in the 60m prelims. It says prelims with the top 8 advancing but there were only 5 entries. So, this may actually be the final results. That's the 3rd best time in the AAC this year behind 2 Houston speedsters.

At the Washburn Mid-Week Challenge today (I think the Shocks like that really nice indoor facility that Washburn has):

Brady Palen and Weston Lewis plus one other high jumper cleared 6-10-25 today. Weston then won a jump off clearing 6-11.75, a new PB for the senior. Weston and Brady currently sit 2nd and 3rd on the 2023 AAC performance charts. Adria Navajon was schedule to compete in the high jump but decided to skip it. Not sure why.

Joseph Holthusen won the 60m hurdles in a meet record 7.96 seconds going sub-8 for 2nd meet in a row. Adria Navajon also broke the old meet record with a PB time of 8.04 seconds which would be worth 972 points in a pentathlon. Jaleel Montgomery was close behind to finish 3rd in 8.12 seconds.

Jaleel and Joseph both broke 7 seconds in the 60m dash finishing 1-2 in 6.89 seconds and 6.95 seconds. Unfortunately, in the speedy AAC you probably will need to run 6.75 to 6.80 to score.

JD Prinsloo ran a PB of 48.60 in the 400m dash. But again he will probably need to be at around 48 flat or better to score in the AAC Championships.

Fr. Bryan Haney and So. Jaleel Montgomery finished 2-3 in the 200m dash both with PB's of 21.827 and 21.828 respectively. Probably need to be close to 21.5 to score in the AAC but really nice times for the two youngsters. Joakim Generoux, the Shocks best 200m guy, was schedule to run but did not start.

The 4x400 relay team of R.J. Hutchinson, JD Prinsloo, Bryan Haney and Toby Penner ran a 3:17.59 which so far is 3rd best in the AAC this season.

Adrian Diaz Lopez Shatters School Record in Seattle

Adrian Diaz Lopez, a sophomore from Spain by way of Cowley County CC and in his first year as a Shocker, was sent out to the University of Washington Husky Classic for the express purpose of competing in a high level field in an attempt to break the Wichita State all-time mark in the indoor 3k race. The Shocker record of 8:07.18 was set by Ugis Jocis in 2017. Morrnay Anandale at 8:09.83 (1992) and Martins Alksnis 8:11.11 (1996) were #2 and #3 on that list. ADL's previous PB as a Shocker was 8:15.27 (8th best in school history) but he had a PB of 8:01.33 at Cowely College that he ran last year at the 2022 Washburn Open.

They had hoped to make the record attempt last week in Lincoln but the quality of that field did not develop has they had hoped so they moved ADL to the mile for a tuneup for this weeks record attempt at Washington. ADL responded well to that change, just barely missing an new school record in the indoor mile, falling just short of Adam Moore's 2022 school record of 4:01.08 with a time of 4:01.10.

Mission accomplished. ADL smashed the Shocker all-time 3k mark by 13 seconds among a stacked field Friday at the Husky Classic witha time of 7:54.36. An indication of how strong this field of runners was is that ADL finished 11th. After arriving in Seattle, Diaz-Lopez was slated to run in the fourth heat of the 3,000 meters at 4:00 p.m. PT, but the Washington coaches allowed him to elevate to the faster sixth heat upon request, pushing his race back to 8:10 p.m. PT.

"What a great race," distance coach Kirk Hunter said. "What a fabulous performance. Unbelievable."

"When I saw the time, I saw the school record, and I almost started crying because it means a lot to me, and it means a lot to Coach Hunter for all the work we did during the cross country season."

That time by ADL gives him a shot of at least taking a bite out of Tulsa's long distance domination in the AAC. 9 of the top 12 indoor 3k times in the AAC this year belong to Tulsa runners. Tulsa concentrates its track scholarship money on its XC/Long distance runners and they are very good. ADL's time is 4th best in the AAC this year behind 3 Tulsa seniors.

It will be interesting to see how low ADL can go in his Shocker career. "I couldn't be happier to be at Wichita State," Diaz-Lopez said. "I feel this is just the beginning. I'm ready to do this thing. We're going to handle business and hopefully make history like last year in the conference championship."
