Michael Bryan Takes the Ring at NCAA Indoor Championships - 4:00 PM Friday

Michael Bryan is set to represent the Wichita State track and field team at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday at 4 p.m. at the Birmingham Crossplex.

I what well may be the best and brightest accomplishment of Wichita State athletics in 2020-21 Michael Bryan is set to represent the Wichita State track and field team in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday at 4 p.m. at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Unfortunately, Michael and the track and filed program pretty much operate in the shadows.

He enters the championship meet as the No. 8 seed in a competition where the top eight make it to finals.

"The meet is kind of intimidating because we're all so close to each other distance-wise to the point where it's within one foot whether or not you make finals," Bryan said.

Bryan has already secured All-American honors by qualifying to the NCAA Indoor Championships, but a top-eight finish will elevate him to first team.

"I'm just trying to enjoy it," he said. "At conference, I threw 22.58m, and if I replicate that, I should make it to finals. First couple throws, my goal is to hit 21.5 meters. If I throw 23 meters, that should get me top three."

Good luck, MIchael. I hope you have it going today.

Michael just didn't quite have it today. His best throw was 68-8.5 which was not good enough to get him into the 9-man final. He will finish 14th and earn 2nd team All-American honors.

Congratulations on a very good year to Michael.

The Shocks are hosting the Shocker Spring Invitational at Cessna stadium on Friday and Saturday.

Basically, an early season structured workout to see where some of your athletes stand and what they need to work on. The teams competing include Friends, Iowa Central CC, Cowley CC and Butler CC so perhaps a bit of a recruiting tool as well. Not a whole lot going on for the Shocks in this early season event.

Michael Bryan opened his outdoor season in the hammer throw with pull of 67.79m/222-5. Michael's school record in this event is 231-2 so that's not a bad start to the season especially on a cool evening.

I am keeping an eye on Tanner Brown in the decathlon. He is on track to break is PB by about 1,000 points. He has a score of 5,354 after 7 events he has the pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters remaining. If he comes close to his best marks in those event he will finish with about 7,300 points. 7,110 or better would put Tanner in the WSU Top-10 in the decathlon.

Shocker Freshman Adria Navajon who edged out Tanner for the AAC Indoor Heptathlon Championship is not competing in the decathlon but I assume he will when the AAC Outdoor Championships come to Wichita in Mid-May. Adria did win the individual 110m hurdles today with a time of 14.73. A good time for multi-event athlete. Tanner ran 15.56 in the decathlon 110m race. Adria's time would be worth 99 points more than Tanner's time in the decathlon.

Tanner finishes off the decathlon win with a score of 7,178 and that moves him into the Shocker All-Time Top 10 in this event at #8. I would be a little surprised if Tanner competes in another full decathlon between now and the AAC Outdoor Championships but he might do one more. The most important thing is to try be near peak readiness when the AAC Championships get here.

The Shocks move up to a much bigger time meet this weekend travelling to the Hayward Premiere on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Micheal Bryan is competing in the hammer throw as I type this.

An interesting feature of the liive stats is that you can see a video of each athletes attempt by clicking on the camera next to their name.

            https://live.athletictiming.net/meet...ontal/compiled

Michael really generates some speed with his spin.

After the first 3 throws Michael sits in 3rd place behind to post-college athletes. One from the Adidas Track Club and one former UCLA athlete. Of the top 3 guys he is the only one with no fouls. He has been very consistent launching the hammer 68.23 (223-10), 67.69 (222-01) and 69.36 (227.06). The top 3 guys are are within about 4 feet of each other.

On his 4th throw Michael breaks the 70 meter mark at 70.32 (230-08) but is still 1 inch out of 2nd place. Michael's throws all look identical. Very consistent form and results. Impressive.

Michael fouled on his 5th throw. Not sure he stepped out of the ring. Looked liked the official signaled good. Perhaps was wide of the sideline boundary. Looked like he went for it on that one. Michael's 6ht and final attempt is a throw of 69.32.

Michael's 70.32 (230-08) on his 4th attempt is good for 3rd overall but is the best throw by a current collegian by 18 feet.

Very good performance from the Shocker senior.

Adria Navajon, the freshman multi-eventer from Barcelona, continues his good work finishes 3rd in the long jump with leap of 23-5.5

Sophomore Taran Taylor continues his comeback form elbow surgery to place second in the javelin with a very nice mark of 226-5

Junior Clayton Duchatschek finished 8th the Invite portion of the 3000m steeplechase in a time of 8:57.25 which moves him into the Shocks All-Time Top 10 at #8.

Senior Adam Moore want the select portion of the 1500m run by 2 seconds with a time of 3:44.93 which was just 1/4 second off his personal best.

Sophomore Trey Rios (30:11.80), Junior Jackson Caldwell (30:17.16) and Junior Ben Flowers (30:38.37) finished 6th, 7th and 9th in the select portion of the 10k. The times by Trey and Jackson put them into the Shocker All-Time Top 10 list at #9 and #10.

I think you can only see free vidoe of Michael throwing the hammer for another 5 hours,

If you would like to check this out go the following link and click on the video icon to the right of Michael's name:

                  https://live.athletictiming.net/meet...463368/results

By the way, Michael's throw of 230-08 was just shy of his Shocker school record of 231-02. Hoperfully, he will raise that mark sometime this year..

                    Saturday Highlights From Eugene:

Freshmen multi-eventers Adria Navajon and Hudson Bailey ran 14.65 and 14.73 in the 100m hurdles which were new personal bestss for the freshman pair.

Canadian import Joakim Genereux, a sophomore I think, set a new personal best running a 48.19 in the 400m dash. His previous best was 48.91.

Freshman Ridge Estes, a very strong looking young man from Bucklin, Kansas, set new personal best in the discuss with throw of 173-04 breading his previous collegiate best of 161-11. That also puts Ridge at #10 All-Time in the Shocker record book.

While the Shockers are hosting the KT Woodman Classic this weekend the Shocker's spinning fool Michael Bryan is heading over to the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas to compete in the hammer throw this afternoon at 3:30 pm.

Looks like there will be some very good competition, at least among the top 6 or 7 guys.

                        https://results.flashresults.com/202...39-1_start.htm

                        Go get 'em Michael.

Looks like there may be a live video stream: https://www.espn.com/watch/player?id...6-90ef4e7ef42b

Michael is in Flight 2 so the 11 first flight guys will get their 1st three throws in before the 12-man 2nd flight starts.

I an not getting any video. Perhaps it is a paywall or it could be since the only events tonight are the men's and women's hammer throws that the video stream will not start until Friday.

However, after five attempts Michael is sitting in 1st place with a throw of 224-1.

Michael is still on top and he is the only one left with another attempt if he wants its. But he will be the winner.

On his last throw Michael uncorks a 7033m/230.9 toss of the 16 point implement. That's a season best and only 5 inches short of his Shokcer school record. The next closest collegian in this meet was Nebraska's Alexander Talley with a mark of 216-0.

                          Stay healthy Michael.

Nice RH article by Paul Suellentrop on Shocker sophomore distance runner Trey Rios out of Maize South. Sounds like a great young man.

RH: "Son of a Gun, He Went Down There and Scored"

"He is a strong believer in Wichita," Frye said. "We always want youth to rise up and have a greater voice in how we're going to shape our community, because that's who we need to be thinking about. Trey is one of those people who can help us figure out what we need to do to continue to get people to stay here."

"Trey was a 10-minute, something, two-miler," Wichita State distance coach Kirk Hunter said. "No way I could recruit him. I advised them to videotape time trials. Send them to me. His first one was OK. His next one was something like 9:30 and we said 'That's good. We'll give him a shot to walk on.' His next one was 9:21. So we said 'Ok, we'll give you a spot.'"

"I really, really love the community I've grown up in," he said. "I wanted to run for my hometown university. I've been a lifelong Shocker."

GoShockers.com Report on Michael Bryan's Hammer Throw Win in Arkansas

Michael Bryan triumphed over a competitive field of hammer throwers Thursday at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Bryan's throws built throughout the competition as his first throw went for 64.79m/212-6, and he is second throw sent him into finals with the top preliminary mark of 67.72m/222-2. He fouled his last throw of prelims and his first throw in the finals, but he improved his lead on his fifth throw with a mark of 68.31m/224-1. With the win already clinched and nothing to lose, Bryan launched his sixth and final throw out to a season-best 70.33m/230-9.

This mark ranks 58th in the world and maintains his No. 5 spot in the national rankings as he remains atop the American Athletic Conference standings. The throw also landed over nine feet farther than the second-place competitor's mark.

Meanwhile out at the breezy KT Woodman Classic at Cessna Stadium:

On Friday evening Clayton Duchatschek recorded a personal-best time of 14:22.21 in the 5000m run moving up from 9th place to 6th place on the Shocker All-Time Top 10 list.

2nd year Freshman Brady Palen out of Beloit handled the winds well to day clearing a Personal Best 7-1.75 in the high jump as he makes his debut in the Shocker All-Time Top 10 outdoors tying him for 3rd place on that list.

Dowdy Elazarig set a new PR in the triple jump moving past the 50 foot mark at 50-6. Best in the AAC so far this season. Not sure if that is a wind aided mark or not.

Michael Bryan returned from Arkansas to add another notch to his belt with a winning throw of 225-1 which was about 5-8 short of what he threw in Arkansas but good enough to win this meet by 22 feet. They would have been throwing into the wind today I think.

Butler County CC won the men's 4x100 in a time of 39.97 which would be 2nd in the AAC behind Houston at this point in the season.

Freshman multi-eventer Adria Navajon ran a PB in 110m hurdles at 14.19 but I think it was wind aided.
