Men's 200m Prelims

As expected Houston will dominate the 100m and 200m sprints. The qualified 7 runners into the 8 man finals guaranteeing they will score big points. Only Cincinnati was able to place a runner in the final other that Houston. Houston will score a boatload of points in these two events.

It took 21.30 or better to qualify. The Shockers only sprinter in the event, Freshman Joakim Genereaux out of Canada, was 11th at 21.55. Not a bad effort for a Freshman, Perhaps he will break into the top 8 in a couple of years.

Men's 400H Prelims

Shocker juniors Antonia Norman and Yuben Goncalves both make it into the 8-man finals in the 400m hurdles. Houston and Memphis also get 2 in.

Men's 10k Final

I wasn't planning on posting about this event as I didn't think the Shocks had a chance up scoring. However, to my surprise the Shocks picked up an unexpected point (at least I wasn't expecting it) when freshman Trey Rios out of Maize South finished 8th in the 10k with a time of 31:40.94. Helluva job young man. I would tell you to take a victory lap but I think 25 of them is enough for one evening.

Men's Decathlon - Day 2

In what would have to be considered an extremely down year in the decathlon for he AAC (no Hunter Veith's in this group) Cincy's Cannon Riddle takes the gold with a score of 7,013 followed by Shockers Nathan Vann with 6,863 points and Chonnor Ludolph with 6,454 points. These are the only atheltes of the 7 entered who completed all ten events. The remaining 4 athletes, including 3 Shockers completed anywhere from 3 to 5 events.

However, apparently points are awarded regardless wirth how many events are actuallt complerted so the Shocks ended up taking 2-3-4-5-6 place points for a total of 26 points. Cincinnati took 1st and 7th place points for a total of 12 points.

Not sure you should be awarded any points in a decathlon where you compete in half or less of the events but apparently the Shockers tood advantage of a loophole. I wonder if this will attract from scrutiny going forward.

Men's Long Jump

Shocker sophomore Dowdy Elazarig performed well in the long jump taking 2nd place with a leap of 24-4.5 which was a new PR and good for 8 points. Shocker junior Yuben Goncalves missed an 8 place finish and a point by 1.5 inches.

Men's Shot Put

Senior Cory Martens picked up 3 points with put of 55-8.5 good for 6th place.

Men's 110m Hurdles Prelims

The Shockers had a good result with Antonio Norman, Joseph Holthusen and freshman Jaleel Montgomery all quaifying for the 8-man finals on Sunday.

Men's 800m Prelims

Another good result for the Shockers as Jed Helker, Zack Penrod, Josh Cable and Adam Moore all qualified for Sunday's final and will represent half of the 8-man final. Especially happy for Josh Cable considering his background story.

Men's 400m Prelims

In a little bit of a surprise Shocker senior Adam Gauzy qualified 5th in the 400m prelims and will be in the final 8 on Sunday.

Men's 100m Prelims

As in the 200m prelims on Friday Houston dominated taking 7 of the 8 qualifying spots for Sunday's 100m final. The only non-Houston sprinter in the finals is Shocker freshman Jaleel Montgomery, out of Wichita West. A good day for the Shocker freshman (see 110m Hurdles above). Jaleel may only manage to pick up 1 point in the final but you are in tall cotton when your running with the Houstor rockets.

Men's 3000m Steeplechase

In perhaps a mild surpirse Shocker senior Ethan Kossover wins the steeplechase as the only runner to break 9 minutes in a new PR time of 8:57.05 while junior Clayton Duchatschek was 4th in 9:08.27 good for a total of 15 points.

The Shocks are in pretty good shape at this stage but the points will come rolling in for Houston tomorrow as the bulk of the running events are scored especially in the 100m and 200m sprints where Houston has 7 of 8 spots in the finals in both of those races. Houston is also very strong and deep in the pole vault this year.

Something for Wichita State fans to watch on Sunday: the men's track and field team has given itself a real chance to challenge Houston to end the Cougars' 4-year reign of outdoor championships. Finals on the track begin at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday with coverage streaming on ESPN+.

Note that the field events start at 1:30 p.m CDT including the men's high jump which will be a key event for the Shocker men. They need to and have the potential to do well in that event.

Key track events for the Shocker men will be the 1500m run at 4:00 p.m. CDT where the Shocks have 4 runners in the 12-man final although Houston has the top seed and the 800m run where the Shocks have claimed 4 of the 8 spots in the final Also keep any eye on the 110m and 400m hurdles races.

Coming into Sunday the Shockers lead Houston by 94 points at 102-18. However, Houston is set up to rake in a huge trove of points in 3 events. In the 100m and 200m dashes they have 7 of 8 finals spots in both of those races and easily could claim 1st through 7th in both races. That would be 38 points in each event. in the pole vault Coming in Houston has the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th best marks among the 14 competitors in that event. If form holds Houston could earn 29 points give or take a point or two in the pole vault. Just in those 3 events the Cougars will accumulate around 105 points. The Shocker men will probably pick up 1 point in these events. Which would more than take care of the Shocker's 94 point advantage coming in.

Houston is also likely to win the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay for and additional 20 points. Houston could also pick up around 20 points in the triple jump.

My prediction based on the performance charts in the remaining events is:

Houston - 210
Shockers - 210

So it will come down to who can outpeform their best efforts of the season and who can avoid underperforming those efforts.

For example, Jed Helker and Clayton Duchatschek are 9th and 10th in the performance charts in the 5k race. Can either somehow squeese into the top 8 for a point or two. Or in the men's discuss where Houston has the 3rd seed and Shocker Cory Martens is the 5th seed at about 6 feet difference. Could Cory flip the switch. In any case look for any slight out-performance or under-performance that could make the difference.

This could be a very exciting finish.

Doc, see my post above that took me about an hour to finish. I have it potentially very close. Like dead even at 210-210.

The Shocks have a shot but every athlete competing will have to be at their best.

Men's High Jump

The Shockers go 1-2-4 in the high jump with Davis Dubert setting a new PR at 7-0.25, Freshman Brady Palen 2nd at 6-11 and Weston Lewis on 6-8.25 on few misses as 4 other guys cleared that height. Was hoping for a 1-2-3 finish from the Shocks but this is a very good result. 23 points for the Shocks.

Men's 4x100 Relay

As expected Houston easily cruises to a win in the 4x100 to pick up 10 points. The Shocks picked up 4th but for 5 points but I was hoping for 3rd in this event. So that's two events in a row the Shocks are perhaps 1 point below expectations. That does't sound like a lot but it could be the difference at the end.

Men's 1500m Final

The Shockers finish 3rd (Jed Helker), 4th (Zack Penrod), 7th (Adam Moore) and 8th (Bryce Merriman) for a total of 14 points. Houston just missing the scoring as their only runner in the event finished 9th. The Houston runner was seeded ahead of Bryce coming in so good job by Bryce in perhaps flipping that 8th place point. Bryce edged the Houston runner by 34/100ths of a second. Still not quite the peformance I was looking for from the top 3 Shockers sin this event. At this point I am a little concerned as the Shocks are having just a little bit of slippage in each event so far.

Men's 110m Hurdles Final

Houston's Akindele brothers go 1-2. I was hoping Shocker Antonio Norman might get second but he had to settle for 3rd despite tieing his season best at 13.81. Joseph Holthuzen was 6th and Jaleel Montgomery 8th. Houton picks up 18 points and the Shockers 10 points. Again a little slippage here for the Shocks.

Men's 400m Hurdle

Here come Houston get ready. The Cougars go 1-3-6 for 19 points. Shocker Adam Gauzy is 8th for 1 point. Needed Adam to do a little better. He ran 48.65 today after a 47.91 in the prelims.

Went exactly as expected as Houtson finishes 1-7 for 38 points including Shaun Maswanganyi setting a new AAC record at 9.87. Jaleel Montgomer picking up the 1 point for an 8th place finish.

Men's 800m Final

A pretty good result for the Shocks taking 1st (Zack Penrod), 2nd (Jed Helker), 5th (Josh Cable) and 8th (Adam Moore) for 23 points with Houston picking up the 6 points for a 3rd place finish.

Men's Triple Jump

Houston takes 1-2-5 for 22 points in the triple jump. The Shockers pick up 4 points with 6th (Dowdy Elazarig) and 8th (Yuben Gonclaves).

Houston took 1st, 2nd, tied for 3rd, 6th and 8th for 27.5 points,

Houston took 5th and Shocker Corey Marten finsihed 6th.

With the 200m dash coming up I don't think the Shocks are going to have enough to hold on.

Men's 200m Final

Houston takes 1-2-4-5-6-7-8 for 33 points. Cincy's Chris Borzor helped the Shocks by finishing 3rd but it won't be enough. Shocks pretty much have 2nd locked up.

Score With 2 events to go: Houston 211.50 - Wichita State 192

Men's 4x400 Relay

Houston wins the 4x400 as expected. Nice effort to finish 3rd by the Shocks.

Great effort by the Shocker men. Houston is just a juggernaut.

Before the meet I had charted Houston out at 222 points and that would be very diffiicutl to overocme. The essentially hit that mark and it was too difficult to overcome.

Houston won the last AAC Outdoor Chamionships scoring 178.75 points. The Shocks 198 would probably win in a lot of years. Although in 2019 UConn was still in the AAC and they would have pulled points from someone.

The following schools field Women's Track & Field teams but not men: SMU, Temple and Tulane. Title IX deal I guess.

Davis scored a total of 23 points. 8 in the javelin (2nd), 5 in the Decathon (4th although he only completed 5 events) and 10 in the high jump (1st).

That South African freshman from Houston is a freak. 9.87 is RIDICULOUS. And he really shut it down with 5-10 meters left. No doubt a couple of ticks were left on the track.

So that puts him in a tie for the 139th fastest 100M EVER. EVER. If you eliminate duplicate entries (Usain Bolt has about 40 of those times) it puts him around the 26th fastest human of all time.

He did the same thing in the 200m where he ran a 19.93 breaking the AAC Championship and the Stadium record in that event as well.

Tied for 224th fastest time in the world, ever. If the Olympics happen this year, this is certainly one to watch.

If he were American, it would be the fastest time this year in the 100 and 3rd fastest in the 200.

Tickets to Eugene Up For Grabs in College Station For Wichita State Track and Field

The regional round of the NCAA Track and Field Championships is here, and the Shockers are well-represented with 11 men and 6 women athletes slated to compete. Action in College Station takes place Wednesday through Saturday. 48 athletes enter the field in each event and 12 move onto the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in June. Running events will go through two rounds to decide the top 12 while the field-event athletes will have three attempts to put up a top-12 mark. The high jump will run as it would at any other meet.

Looks like Michael Bryan in the Hammer Throw and Taran Taylor in the Javelin have the best shots at advancing to Eugene. Davis Dubbert gets two shots at the prize in the Javelin and the High Jump (some what of an unusual combo) although he is a bit of a long shot in both. These are the only 3 Shocker men ranked in the top half of their events.

Michael Bryan Qualifies for NCAA Championships

Bryan had one legal mark in the men's hammer throw, which is all he needed to qualify for the NCAA Championships in June. He threw the hammer 66.30m/217-6 to earn ninth place and a ticket to Eugene, Oregon.

"Michael has truly fashioned together one of the special seasons in the history of Shocker Track and Field," said Director of Track and Field Steve Rainbolt. "Qualifying for the NCAA finals in Eugene is another major accomplishment in a year full of major accomplishments. I am super proud of Michael and I am really looking forward to his pursuit of All-America status at Hayward Field in Eugene."

Bryan is set for his first trip to the NCAA Championships. The West Regional was his first appearance at any NCAA postseason event.

Antonio Norman advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's 110-meter hurdles, which are set for Friday. He ran a time of 13.84 and advanced on a time qualifier.

Zack Penrod finished fourth in his heat of the 1,500 meters to advance to Friday's quarterfinals. His time of 3:45.46 was the 13th-best time in the first round.
