2020-21 Shocker Men XC and Track & Field

No one has posted on this forum since March 1st. Must be the pandemic.

Coach Rainbolt announced his incoming class yesterday including 9 male athletes and 17 females athletes. At least I am assuming male or female. Perhaps not PC.

The guy who caught my eye among the 9 male newcomers was:

Jaleel Montgomery (Wichita, Kansas; Wichita West HS) Sprints/Hurdles: Won the state title in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2019 KSHSAA State Championships … Also finished third in the 200 meters at the 2019 state meet … Was a member of his school's 4X100- and 4X400-meter relay teams at the state meet in 2018 and 2019 … Won eight races during the 2019 season … Was a member of the Shocker Track Club … Holds his high school's record in the 110-meter hurdles. Personal Bests – 60 Meters: 6.95; 100 Meters: 10.78; 200 Meters: 21.66; 60-Meter Hurdles: 8.08; 110-Meter Hurdles: 14.08

Just to give you an idea how good these high school bests are his 60M time is .07 seconds out making the WSU Top 10 All-Time; his 100M time is within 0.28 seconds of the WSU Top 10; His 200M time is 0.46 seconds within the WSU Top 10; his 60H time is equal to the 10th best time in WSU History and his 110H time woudl be 6th best all-time at WSU.

The AAC is very tough speed league but maybe we finally have a guy that will be able to hold his own in a couple of years.

A name to follow for sure.

Also, Brady Palen, out of Beloit, has a high shcool best in the high jump of 6-10.5 which is only 1 each of a Top 10 all-time mark at WSU.

FYI - regarding Montgomery - the hurdles in college are higher so the comparison isn't exactly apples to apples. But he is definitely a good one and would expect him, Holthusen and Norman to be possibly the best hurdle group in the AAC in the coming years.

Also, Joakim Genereux from Canada has a better 200m time than Montgomery coming in. Those guys will also help put together a very nice 4x1 relay.

Last year at the AAC Indoor Chamionships, WSU outscored Houston 13-10 in the men's hurdles with both athletes (Holthusen and Norman) as sophomores while Houston's were scored by a senior and junior. Adding another hurdler at their level could certainly give WSU the best group.

Yes, that's a good point on the height of the hurdles. Let's hope Mr. Montgomery adjusts as well as Mr. Holthusen did in his Freshman year.

Whoa! What an upgrade for Shocker Track and Field in the Student-Athlete Success Center:

Some major conference teams are cutting track/cross country. Hopefully we can pick up some transfers.

Maybe, but since track and field has such a small number of scholarships relative to their roster sizes (12 for the men and 18 for the women to divvy up among aroud 60 atheltes on each squad) they seem to recruit a mostly athletes that qualify for in-state tuition and/or academic scholarships. Of course, the "in-state" pool is much larget these days thanks to Dr. Bardo's I-35 fairway initiative.

Shocker men had a good meet at the indoor triangular in Manhattan vs K-State and KU. Looks like the Shockers has some strong young sprinters which hasn't always been a strength of the team although they have a tradition of good hurdlers.

Had the team scores been split between men and women, the Wichita State would've won the men's meet with 122 points.

"Winning the men's section of this meet was certainly a major highlight today without question," Rainbolt said. "That's the first time that we have ever won one of the sections of this meet and I'm really proud of our men's team for pulling off that victory."

The Shocker men had two podium sweeps in the sprints as the Shockers went 1-2-3 in the 60 meters and the 200 meters.

Jaleel Montgomery won the 60 meters, crossing the line in 6.87 seconds. Montgomery's Shocker debut was good enough to slot him in a tie for seventh place in school history in the 60 meters. Tanner Brown finished second in the event (6.94) and fellow freshman Joakim Genereux came in third (6.95).

Genereux led a trio to the podium in the 200 meters. He won the event with a time of 22.33, while Joseph Holthusen was the runner-up in 23.08 and Montgomery came in third place with a time of 23.17.

Holthusen and Antonio Norman continued their strong starts from Thursday in the 60-meter hurdles. Holthusen won the event in 7.99 seconds, securing his second sub-8 second performance of the year. Norman was right behind him in second with a time of 8.00.

Holthusen Runs Top-Five Time, Sets Facility Record

Joseph Holthusen ran a time of 7.79 in the 60-meter hurdles' final. His time ranks No. 5 in the NCAA as of Friday. Holthusen's time set the Heskett Center facility record.

Holthusen already owned the second-best time in Wichita State history with 7.84. He improved upon his time and his performance still sits at second-best in school history.

Antonio Norman continued his solid season in the 60-meter hurdles as well, running 7.98 and 7.95 in the prelims and finals.

Michael Bryan improved upon his personal-best mark in the weight throw. He tossed the weight 20.44m/67-0.75. His mark puts him in a tie for 22nd in the country and moves him into third in school history.

Tanner Brown won the heptathlon with a total of 5,260 points. Brown sits at No. 14 in the country in the heptathlon.

Nate Vann was the heptathlon's runner-up with 5,227 points. Vann's mark puts him at No. 15 in the country in the overall heptathlon.

The Tulsa men dominated the AAC XC Champiohships this morning at 4 mile creek resort with a team score of 20 on their way to their 8th consecutive AAC Men's XC Championship and are know 8 for 8 since the AAC has been around. Tulsa's top 5 finished 1-2-4-6-7 (plus the other 2 runners finished 10 and 12). Not quite sure how Tulsa has developed such a strong XC program.

The WSU Men finished 4th out ot the 8 competing teams with a score of 112. Jed Helker being the Shocker men's top finisher in 14th place. The Shocker's top 5 finished 14-22-24-28-31.

Helker finished 14th overall, completing the 8K 24:58.30. Helker became the second Shocker man to earn all-conference honors under Hunter. The only other Shocker to do it was Ben Flowers in 2019.

Helker's performance clinched him his second all-conference honor. He was named an all-conference athlete as a member of the conference champion DMR team at the 2020 AAC Indoor Championships.

Clayton Duchatschek and Adam Moore placed in the top 25 overall. Duchatschek placed 22nd and Moore was right behind him in 24th.

Ethan Kossover (28th) and Bryce Merriman (31st) rounded out the Shockers' top five.

In the men's team race, the 4th-best team in the nation, Tulsa, was nearly perfect. The Golden Hurricane scored 20 points, going 1-2-4-6-7.
