Hatch could not handle Rice at all. Rice got 2 quick buckets to start the game (1st 1:30) and Hatch was pulled. Hatch started the 2nd half and Rice got 6 quick points (2:30 minutes). I don't remember if Hatch was in when Rice got the 3 in the next position.
Stutz and Blair had Drake figured out inside. Ball in to Stutz, quick double team, Stutz makes the quick past to Blair for the lay up. They did this about 3 times and a couple of them got us rolling in the last 7:30 of the 1st half.
At one juncture about mid-way through the 1st half, we were shooting about 20% from the field. That is why Drake hung so close so long. This is and will be rare. Even so, in the end, we had 7 players make at least 1 three. That was nice to see.
My recollection is that was the time in the game where D-Will contributed a nice run of 5 points in a row to help right the ship. Good to see him back in the rotation. Hopefully a sign of growing up.
Actually, when we were down mid-way through the first half Stutz got a basket off a nice pass (not sure which guard through it on the break). Next possesion Stutz hits the wing and immediately follows with a high-low assist. Back on Defense and Stutz forces VanDeest into an errant pass leading to another Shocker fast break basket. That is an 8 point run in less than 2 minutes that GS was directly or indirectly responsible for. Drake called a time out and after a couple of back and forths I believe DWill hit two out of three to extend the lead.
I thought the refs were good tonight when I watched it on the tube. I jumped out of my seat mad a couple of times, but the replay showed me to be incorrect. I was glad to see the refs let em play a little bit. Can you imagine how slow the game would have been had they called it tight?
I'll echo the sentiments about Smith, but I am ready to see him rebound like he did in juco! The guy has a sweet stroke!
I really like the way Ellis is playing this year. He's still the screener/defender, but he is using his athleticism to be agressive in spots. He doesn't need to score 10 a game, but it's great to see him shoot it 5 times and make 50%.
Rice is a beast! I don't look forward to playing against him for the next 4 years. Very impressive freshman.
Also, it should be noted that VanDeest is a 6-11 sophomore that is very similar to Stutz in athleticism and style, but Stutz took it to him like a man and won that battle! I was glad to see that as last year VanDeest was the better player in both our match-ups against Drake. By the way, Stutz and Murry had nearly identical box scores in the major categories...both with 10 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, and 1 block. Go figure!
That block call on Durley in the second half was one of the worst calls I've ever witnessed. Absolutely garbage.
The replay showed that Durley turned his shoulder into the player, so it ended up being a good called. Of course in real time, it looked like a charge.
Getting the ball to Stutz on the block was guaranteed points. Blair was open for a bunny every time it happened. The only thing DU could do to stop that was foul. And they did. And the refs seemed to think they should keep the fouls even.
Durley stood motionless so long that glaciers moved past him and he still got called for a block. Murry fouled a guy's hand with his chest and somehow did that hard enough that the guy he fouled fell down BEFORE the"foul" happened.
Why wasn't Ellis open under the basket when Durley got the ball? Oh, because Durley was posting up somewhere near Goddard.
Rice was beating Hatch bad early in the game and Hatch got an early hook. I'm even joining the "Ben Smith needs more minutes" group, but I thought I'd be joining that group about this time of the season.
DWill is getting minutes at SG. That might be his natural spot. My basketball IQ isn't great, but I thik DWill looks better at SG than PG.
Anybody who questions the minutes Ellis is getting isn't paying attention. Ellis could be a contender for Valley Defensive PoY. He does a good job of taking advantage of scoring opportunities, even though he's a "pass first" PF. Durley can put points on the board, but there HAS to be a defender like Ellis in with Durley. Durley still plays D like the guy he's guarding hasn't had a bath in a month.
DU now leads the league in the category: Least Minutes Given Up To Orupke.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades. We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

wufan, we must not ever admit that a ref was correct and we were wrong on here no matter what? Me keed. Yes SHOXMVC, DWILL showed us the way and was player of the game on KNSS.
Mr. Stutz can really pass. He drained another 3 tonight, went straight up, blocked a shot, got the ball, and made an outlet pass, and is solid on his throws. Our 4 big men are looking good and I still want EO in this mix more if at all possible.
Before the game, Drake was shooting lights out from everywhere. Playing them in horse could be a challenge. However, the Shocks D did not allow such fancy-smancy accurate shooting. Speaking of cold shooting, the first 10-15 minutes was coyote ugly for our beloved Shocks. It was almost as if there was a lid on top of our basket.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Garrett is shooting 45.5% from three (5-11). Not too bad for a 7 footer.
1979 was a good year and I concur with Stutz and his shooting. If teams want to leave him wide open, then thank you very much. We are starting to really draw more fouls as a team it seems versus the earlier part of this Season which is of essence. Speaking of Stutz, I want him to start slamming that ball home when close inside like a man on a mission towards March.

wsushox1---When you win by 19, you do not expect quite so much ugly. However, there were positives that we can grow on. I will take a 19 point ugly win over a 1 point pretty cloak and dagger loss. Does that make sense?
